Bacon Fat Candle: Love It or Hate It?

Most of you prefer crispy bacon to its chewy counterpart - but how about bacon in candle form instead?

Rather than oh-so-predictable bacon vodka and bacon chocolate, Rick Gresh, the chef at David Burke's Primehouse in Chicago, is serving guests bacon candles. The votives are made of rendered bacon fat and a vegetable-based wick, and as they melt, are poured over dry-aged steaks and rare scallops to impart a rich, smoked aroma.

Beachy Candle Is an Elegant Summer Centerpiece

Recently, my honey and I had dinner at a restaurant that specialized in coastal American cuisine. While the succulent seafood was the real takeaway, I also made a note to replicate the beach-inspired candles for my next dinner party.

At the center of our two-top table was a nostalgic, uncomplicated piece: the flame of a single votive, flanked by beach sand, inside a short bar glass. This shockingly easy and inexpensive decoration would be perfect for a Summer pool party or even a beach-themed rehearsal dinner.

Paula Deen Candles: Love It or Hate It?

Linens 'n' Things is selling these Paula Deen candles ($19.99), which come in flavors like banana oatmeal chip cookie, coconut pound cake, and banana cream pie. Personally, I'm not sure I would buy them; I prefer candles in basic scents. Still, if they smell like Paula's home cooking, they might be worth checking out! What do you think of them?

Condiment Candles: Love It or Hate It?

The other day I came across these condiment-shaped citronella candles. Although citronella candles are a must for outdoor dining - they keep the mosquitoes away - I don't know if this ketchup, mustard, and relish set is for me. What if a younger guest mistakes one of these candles for the real thing and gets burned? On the other hand, they're kinda cute and have the potential to spark a mustard vs. ketchup debate. What do you think? Condiment candles: fire hazard or foodie fun?

DIY Bloody Halloween Candles

I'm going a little party-crazy this week in preparation for the huge Halloween bash I'm hosting on Saturday. While I'll be using lots of orange Christmas lights in my decor, candles will also play a huge role in creating a spooky look. Better yet, I've decorated long white taper candles to appear as if they are dripping with blood!

This DIY project is incredibly easy, and the final product is super fun for a Halloween bash. These would be great incorporated into a Halloween dinner centerpiece. To see how I made these candles, read more

To make these candles, you will need:

white taper candles
one large red candle
old empty bottles
old newspaper
matches or a lighter

Start by creating a work surface. Cover a table with newspaper.
Place the empty bottles on the newspaper and stick the white candles inside the bottles.

Light the red candle and wait a minute for some wax to form.
Gently and carefully pour the red wax onto the white candle, letting it drip and fall.

Repeat with the process on all of the candles until each one is covered in dripping blood. Set aside to dry.
Use to decorate your Halloween party!

Flesh and Bones Candle: Love It or Hate It?

Usually I stay away from over-the-top and cheesy decorations, but I make an exception for Halloween. I love all crazy and haunting decorations, from hanging witches to smiling pumpkins to spooky skeletons. When I found these Flesh and Bones Candles ($7.99), I was extremely ecstatic and disturbed at the same time. Wouldn't a mantel look gorgeous lined with these candles? Or perhaps you could use them in an elegantly scary centerpiece for a Halloween dinner? What do you think?
