Nov 2 2009 - 11:45am After reviewing the new reference book A Field Guide to Candy, I found myself looking back on all the fun candies we've made, from candied orange peel to peanut brittle to peppermint bark. It left me wondering if you ever tried to make your own candy.
Have You Ever Made Candy at Home?
Making almond brittle is a tradition in my family, especially after my mother learned how to make it in the microwave. And I make fudge every now and then. I would love to make spicy candied
mango
when i was a kid my parents would always make Chocolate Lollipops, I used to like peeling them out of the molds. Now that I am older I help my mom make the Christmas candy.
Do Irish Potatoes count? I made those when i was a kid. Heh. I think it's just cream cheese mixed with confectioners' sugar, rolled into balls and then rolled in cinnamon.
Oo, I also made peppermint bark last year at Christmas. It was yummy at first, but I used white chocolate chips instead of good white chocolate, and the white chocolate parts turned funny
after a while. Not rotten or anything, just... chalky...
I really want to get into candy making for reals, though!
I love making candy at home. I make toffee every year for Christmas, I make peanut brittle, fudge, and I tried making taffy once. I don't think I'd do taffy again though; it was way too
time-consuming for what I ended up with. I probably didn't pull it long enough because it didn't have the right texture. Most of the time I get great results, though. The secret is to USE
YOUR CANDY THERMOMETER!!!
I love making all different kinds of truffles, especially as good Christmas gifts.
Does matzoh candy count? It's basically just a syrupy chocolately goop drizzled onto matzohs, and then you sprinkle other stuff on top of it (coconut, peanuts, m&ms .. what ever floats
your boat, really. my favorite is chopped up candy canes!), wait for it to dry and break it into smaller pieces. My aunt makes it for Hanukkah every year.
Yeah I made a panettone once and decided to make my own candied orange peels for it. I enjoyed that. I made cake truffles this past weekend--I got the hang of chocolate dipping and it's
actually pretty fun! Strangely I don't enjoy baking very much though.
I said that I make it rarely, but now that I think about it, I definitely make it more than just seasonally! Truffles are my favorite around Christmas, but I also make a lot of caramel-based
candies and barks.
I have a great Martha Stewart truffle recipe that I make every year. Lots of variations with one basic recipe. I want to try to make caramels this year, wish me luck!
Oh boy, those candied orange peels took forever! I ended up letting them soak overnight and then doing the final coating at like 6am the next morning before a Hanukkah party. I don't think
I'd do that again. You can buy candy that tastes just as sweet! Lol

1I made those candied orange peels last year... it was the most time consuming thing I'll never do again.
2It is time consuming, but hubby and I have fun doing it. The indulgence is the most fun!

5I make peppermint bark every holiday season. It's a favorite at parties.
6I've made fudge and Turkish Delight before.
7I make candy every Christmas for the neighbors, truffles, fudge, peppermint bark, English toffee, candied walnuts! YUM!!!
8Actually, I've made candy three times before. All three types I've made are the three types you listed in the post!

12My French friend taught me how to make caramel candy, I've been making it every month since!
13I love to make candy at home: fudge, divinity, peanut brittle, peppermint bark, truffles....
Oddly, the best fudge I've made is made with marshmallow cream and is done in the microwave. Divine....

15I usually make fudge for the holidays.
