Italy's Fashion Houses Pay Tribute to Coca-Cola

Milan's 2010 Spring Fashion Week just came to a close, and in addition to revealing their latest collections, Italy's premiere fashion houses also partnered with Coca-Cola to raise funds for earthquake victims in Abruzzo, Italy.

Female designers Donatella Versace, Alberta Ferretti, Angela Missoni, Anna Molinari for Blumarine, Veronica Etro, Silvia Venturini for Fendi, Consuelo Castiglioni for Marni, and Rossella Jardini for Moschino dressed up Coca-Cola Light's trademark clear bottle for sale at an auction during Milan's "Tribute to Fashion" show.

I like them all, but my hands-down favorite is the iconic woven Missoni design, followed closely by the Moschino milk parody and Blumarine's flirty fruit pattern. To see each bottle, read more.

Happy Hour: Kalimotxo

Have you ever thought to yourself, I could really use a cocktail right now, only to realize that your liquor cabinet is empty except for that random bottle of Amaretto? Instead of running to the corner store or the nearest bar, take a tip from the Spanish and make kalimotxo. While the name sounds exotic, the ingredients - coca-cola and red wine - are probably already in your kitchen. I know you're thinking: coke and wine? How could that possibly be any good? I too, thought that when I first heard of kalimotxo, however once you taste it, you'll love it! With the coke bringing out a spicy quality to the wine, the surprising combination is refreshing and satisfying.

Making kalimotxo is also a great way to use wine that's a couple days old. It's so easy to make it practically doesn't need a recipe, but I've put one together anyways. Check it out now and read more.

Kalimotxo
Original Recipe

Ingredients

ice
red wine (it can be any kind, but I like to use a Spanish red, like Rioja)
coca-cola
lemon wedge, optional for garnish

Directions

Place the ice in a fun wine glass or goblet. Fill with red wine until about 2/3* full. Top with coke. If using, squeeze lemon and drop in. Stir with a straw, bar spoon, or finger. Enjoy!

Makes 1 drink.

*The proportions are totally up to you. If the drink tastes better with equal parts red wine and coke or 3/4 wine and 1/4 coke, make it that way.

Coke Cans of Summer: Love It or Hate It?

For the first time ever, Coca-Cola will release a line of special cans that celebrate Summer. On the collector's cans, the signature logo is incorporated into fun images of Summer that include a surfboard, barbecue, and aviator sunglasses. Since Summer is my favorite time of year, I'm loving these cans. How about you?

Roberto Cavalli Coca-Cola Light Bottles: Love It or Hate It?

I'm a huge fan of the Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, so imagine my surprise when I heard he was designing Coca-Cola Light bottles! The limited-edition bottles, which come in three seductive, feminine styles, will be sold in Italy from September to December. While my favorite is the leopard print bottle, I would love to get my hands on any of the animal printed designs. What do you think?

Costco No Longer Carrying Coca-Cola Products

If you weren't able to locate a case of Coke on your last trip to Costco, don't worry - you aren't going crazy. Yesterday, the wholesale club confirmed that it is no longer carrying Coca-Cola products in stores nationwide.

The Washington-based wholesaler is currently in the middle of a dispute with the Coca-Cola Co. Although neither would comment on the matter further, the world's largest soft drink maker said that it was involved in "ongoing negotiations" with the store.

Considering Costco is the fifth largest general retailer in the United States, I'm predicting a resolution soon. But in the meantime, customers will simply have to shop elsewhere to get their Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dasani, VitaminWater, Fresca, Minute Maid, and Odwalla fills (among others). Will you be forced to stock up on soft drinks elsewhere?

Coca-Cola Brings Vault Drink Head to Head With Mtn Dew

Beverage titan Coca-Cola, eager to improve flat sales of carbonated beverage Vault, is hoping to win over consumers with a campaign that employs a tried-and-true tactic: free drinks.

Although Pepsi-owned (and recently renamed) Mtn Dew carries as much as 80 percent of the market share for citrus soda, Coca-Cola's three-year-old citrus cooler Vault, with four percent of the market share, has fizzled with customers. Hoping to turn the tides for Vault, Coca-Cola will soon begin its "Don't Dew It" campaign.

In an attempt to convert Mtn Dew die-hards into Vault fanatics, the company will be giving away coupons for free 16-ounce, 20-ounce, or 24-ounce Vault drinks when customers purchase a 20-ounce Mtn Dew.

During the economic downturn, consumer coupon use has skyrocketed. Like other recent promotions, industry experts anticipate that the "Vault Taste Challenge," will see a huge participation rate from consumers. Of course, for Coca-Cola, it will come at a price - that of at least a couple million dollars.

Although I think this campaign will be successful, I'm skeptical of Coca-Cola snagging a significant portion of Mtn Dew's market share. I used to be a huge Mtn Dew fan, and Surge, Mellow Yellow, and the others just didn't do it for me. Do you think it will prove to be lucrative?

Pemberton's French Wine Coca (Coca-Cola) - Do You Drink Coke?

I already told you about the guy who invented the first coca-cola bottle, but what about the guy who actually invented the beloved drink itself? 122 years ago a Dr. John Pemberton of Atlanta, best known for his expertise in the laboratory, perfected the original formula for a drink he entitled Pemberton's French Wine Cola. Composed of an extract from the leaf of Peruvian Coca, the purest wine, and the Kola nut, this tonic was used to assist digestion and impart energy to the respiration system. However with the introduction of prohibition in 1886, Pemberton had to make a non-alcoholic version of the popular drink so he substituted sugar syrup for the wine, changed the name to Coca-Cola, and advertised it as the ideal temperance drink. Quicker than Emeril could say BAM!, America's most popular drink was born. So tell me, do you drink Coke?

Coca Cola to Remove the Word "Classic" From Title

Coca-Cola is perhaps the most classic of American drinks, however the company has announced their plan to remove the word "classic" from its name. "Classic" was added over twenty years ago, in 1985, to signify that the brand was making a return to using the original recipe. Now with a global approach to advertising, the word is no longer beneficial to the brand. In the current ad campaigns, "Coke side of life" and "open happiness," the word is not employed. According to a spokesman from Coca-Cola, the "classic" is totally unnecessary:

It felt like the right time. When people think Coca-Cola, they think classic. More than two decades after the introduction of that word, its reason for being a descriptor has disappeared.

The beverage company doesn't foresee any customer backlash and has already removed the "classic" from fountain drink cups. I'm not affected by the change; to me Coke is classic. How do you feel about it?
