Pepsi Draws Controversy For Amp Drink iPhone App

Looks like Burger King isn't the only food brand that toes the line between cutting-edge and crass. PepsiCo, the maker of new energy drink Amp, has gotten flack for its latest iPhone launch.

"Amp Up Before You Score" is a free iPhone application that offers young men pointers on how to get in bed with 24 different types of women. Selections include "Sorority Girl," "Treehugger," and "Punk." Amp fans can then detail their conquests on the app's Brag List.

Backlash soon followed, with many accusing Pepsi of demeaning and objectifying women. Amp tried to appease the furor with an apology on Twitter, although it seemed to only want to heighten the buzz around the brand by introducing the Twitter tag #pepsifail.

Sorry, No Whopper For You!

How many of you love a big, juicy Whopper? I have to admit, when I was in high school, that was my favorite off-campus lunch treat. There's something about the sauce that just tastes so great. These days I don't eat them that often, but when I'm on a road trip and have to choose between a Big Mac and a Whopper, I always choose the Whopper. Recently, as a publicity stunt, Burger King discontinued the Whopper at one location. They set up cameras and recorded the reactions. Some folks freak the heck out. They've been showing some of the clips in their recent television commercials, and they're absolutely great. They also pranked folks by replacing Whoppers with Big Macs and Wendy's burgers. Pizza Hut's "Double Roll" Continues To Blow My Mind

Remember the insanely crazy Double Roll Pizza from Pizza Hut Japan? If you didn't believe it was true, all I can say is check out this video below. Not only does this pizza continue to deliver with mind-blowing awesome-ness, but the chime of "Sausage Roolllll Oooooh" in the background is enough to make your jaw drop and your mouth drool. Where's The Beef?

It turns out that January is a big month for hamburgers. Not only is January the month that the word hamburger first appeared in print, but it's also the month when Wendy's famous "Where's the beef?" commercials began. Twenty-three years ago little ol' Clara Peller received a burger with a massive bun causing her to ask "Where's the beef?"

Wendy's Original Burger
From Secret Restaurant Recipes

Serving Size: 1

1/4 pound ground chuck
1 plain jumbo-sized sandwich bun -- (potato kind)

=== CONDIMENTS ===
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Heinz ketchup
Mustard -- as needed
3 slices Heinz genuine dill pickle - (thin slices)
2 iceberg lettuce leaves - (to 3)
2 white onion rings - (to 3)
1 tomato slice
Cheese -- (optional)

Cooking Directions:
Using waxed paper, form the 1/4 pound of beef into a 4-inch square patty.
Refrigerate until you're ready to cook.

Pre-heat an electric griddle to 375 to 400 degrees. After it's ready, toast the bun faces lightly...about 30 seconds. Don't brown as much as the McDonald's or Burger King buns. Set the bun(s) aside.

Cook the fresh or thawed burger patty about 3 minutes on the pre-heated griddle, salting the top immediately after laying it down. After 3 minutes, turn the patty over, salt again, and cook for 3 more minutes.

While the burger is cooking, dress your toasted top bun in the following order: 1 tablespoon mayonnaise; 1 tablespoon Heinz ketchup; 3 thin slices Heinz genuine dills; 2 to 3 rings of fresh sliced white onion; 1 tomato slice; 2 to 3 iceberg lettuce leaves; 5 to 6 squirts of yellow mustard, evenly spaced.

After the meat is finished cooking, drain the excess fat by tilting to the side and applying pressure with your free hand. Place the patty on top of the dressed bun, and add the toasted bottom bun.

Turn right side up, and eat -- or wrap in a 12- by 12-inch sheet of foil and allow to sit in a warm place 3 to 5 minutes before eating.

This recipe yields 1 burger.

Comments: If you'd like the classic Wendy's double, cook two patties, and dress the bun the same. If adding cheese, use only "real" American cheese and place it on top of the dressed bun prior to adding the cooked beef. Double cheese? Do the same.

For Wendy's classic bacon cheese burger, cook the burger and dress the bun as directed above. For the bacon, use Oscar-Mayer Ready-Made pre-cooked bacon. Simply microwave 2 slices for about 30 seconds, and add to your burger between the cheese and the beef patty.

Bud Light's "In the Can" Commercial Aims Below the Belt

To promote its new Bud Light Lime cans, Anheuser-Busch is getting the word out through an interesting campaign that takes raunchiness to the next level. The online commercial features confessions of people who claim they enjoy "getting it in the can."

Industry vets have called the spot a "wannabe viral video" that's "crude" and "juvenile." Personally, I was entertained the first time I saw it - though it doesn't make me want to run to the store to buy Bud Light Lime. What do you think? Is this marketing ploy childish and gross, or a laughable campaign that you can get behind?

Kim Kardashian Is Latest Face of Carl's Jr.

Guess who's joining the ranks of Paris Hilton, Padma Lakshmi, and Audrina Patridge as Carl's Jr. spokesperson? None other than reality show temptress Kim Kardashian.

Kardashian is teaming up with the burger chain - known for its risqué commercials - to promote its new premium salads. It'll be the first commercial spot the company has done for a menu item that's not a burger. The reality TV star tells People that while she's a healthy eater today, she has a number of fond memories involving Carl's Jr.

"Driving to Las Vegas, my dad would take the family and we'd stay at Circus Circus and we always stopped at Carl's Jr," she says.

"I remember this food fight my sisters and I all had in the back of the van – it was so funny. We got in so much trouble!" Do you think Kim Kardashian and Carl's Jr. will make for fun viewing?

Burger King Apologizes For Controversial Commercial

Burger King announced yesterday that it was revising controversial ads for its Texican Whopper in England and Spain after Mexico's ambassador spoke out against the campaign, calling it offensive. The commercials promoted the Europe-only Texican Whopper, a burger with chili con carne, jalapeños, onion, lettuce, a wheat bun, and Cajun mayonnaise. They featured an American cowboy and a pocket-sized wrestler wearing a cape that resembles the Mexican flag. Jorge Zermeno, the Mexican ambassador to Spain, called the chain's ads damaging to the country's image and its flag.

In a letter to Burger King's Spanish division, Zermeno asked that the commercials be removed from the air because they "improperly used the stereotyped image of a Mexican.” In response, the burger chain released a statement saying it was revamping its campaign: "The revised campaign will focuses solely on the Texican Whopper sandwich and will not feature any characters or the use of the Mexican flag. The revised campaign will be on air and in restaurants as soon as commercially possible.”

I don't find this commercial shocking or surprising, given Burger King's track record of eyebrow raising advertisements, from the recent Sir Mix-a-Lot spot to last year's Whopper Virgins. After watching the video below, tell me: Do you think Burger King made the right move?

Audrina Patridge Promotes the Carl's Jr. "Bikini Burger"

Earlier this month we saw a behind the scenes video of The Hills star, Audrina Patridge, filming a new Carl's Jr. advertisement. The completed commercial was released yesterday. The ad is for the limited edition Teriyaki Burger and pays tribute to Patridge's amazing physique. She claims that she has to give up everything to have such a great bikini bod, but the one thing she can't live without is of course, the Teriyaki Burger with grilled pineapple. While I certainly don't believe that Patridge consumes burgers at the beach on a regular basis, I think she looks sexy and find the ad far less offensive than Paris Hilton's disgustingly seductive commercial. Have a Happy Sandwich

Last Fall, Kraft ran a Happy Sandwich video contest, where they asked customers to create 15-second commercials. The commercials all had the theme "Happy Sandwich" - which is a grilled Kraft slice cheese sandwich - and the entries ranged from really fun to downright weird. The 383 entries were then judged and rated until a winner was chosen. That winner is Chris Gianelloni from Metairie, Louisiana and in addition to winning $50,000, he'll proudly be able to see his surreal video on national television. In it a cheese sandwich puts himself into a tanning bed and gets all gooey. It's cute enough, but if I saw this commercial on TV I would definitely do a double take. To see it for yourself, read more.
