Coming to America: Tim Tams

This month, Tim Tam, the number one cookie in Australia, will be hitting shelves in America. Arnott's Biscuits, the maker of the Australian hit cookie, is partnering with sister company Pepperidge Farm to stock Tim Tams in America for a limited time. "Pepperidge Farm is thrilled to introduce Tim Tam to American consumers. We're certain Americans will soon understand why this scrumptious cookie is all the rage in Australia," a spokesperson from Pepperidge Farm said in a statement.

All the rage indeed: Since its introduction down under in 1964, the chocolate-covered cookie, which is made of two chocolate biscuits and a chocolate cream filling, has been a bestseller. Roughly 35 million packs — 400 million biscuits — of Tim Tams are sold to Aussies every year.

Two Tim Tam flavors will be available at Target beginning this month: chocolate creme and caramel. The biscuits, which will supposedly only be available through March 2009, are being retailed for $3.99. Have you ever heard of or tried a Tim Tam cookie before? To keep things easy, serve a no-mess, no-utensil dessert on election night. At LibertySugar and my party, we'll be offering guests sugar cookies! Not just any sugar cookies, I plan on decorating the cookies to look like CitizenSugar's checked box symbol. I'll roll out Paula Deen's classic sugar cookie dough and cut out squares.

Fashion designer Erin Fetherston has partnered with LU Biscuits, the chic French cookie company, to create a limited-edition packaging. Her designs, which were released during Spring 2009 Fashion Week are whimsical and girlie. While I'm a huge fan of LU — who doesn't love the crisp, buttery cookie topped with a layer of chocolate? — I'm not so sure if I love Fetherston's interpretation of the iconic cookie. What do you think?

Ghoulish Halloween Gifts

There are several reasons why Halloween is one of my favorite holidays: First, it's the only day when it's legitimate to wear the most outlandish thing you can think of and get away with it. Furthermore, it's a permissible excuse for adults to return to their youth, reveling in haunted houses and other spooky surprises. And last, but not least, it's entirely acceptable to exchange (and eat) unlimited amounts of candy. Mother's Cookies Has Crumbled

After 94 years, cookie company Mother's Cookies has closed its doors.

The Michigan-based company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, told its workers last Friday that cookies would no longer be made as of Monday.

The reason cited was the economic climate. Chief Restructuring Officer Jeffrey Granger explained that the company has been "operating at a loss due largely to the significant increases in raw material costs and the record high fuel costs across the country."

I'm saddened by the collapse of another company and more job loss, but the hardest part is the sudden parting I have to make with iconic cookies such as circus animals and taffy sandwiches. And there will be no holiday frosted cookies for us this season, either.
