Do You Bake With Shortening?

This morning, I set the record straight on the baking fat known as shortening. Although it's a nice vegan alternative to butter or lard, a number of you are disgusted with its trans fat content. I can relate to both perspectives - although I recently became enamored with the flaky texture it lends to pie crusts, like the one in traditional apple pie.

Let's Dish: Whose Recipes Do You Trust?

Whether it's custard that won't set or brittle fleur de sel caramels, we've all had failed cooking attempts. But when disaster strikes while closely following a recipe, it poses the question: Whose recipes can be trusted? And whose cannot? Most religious recipe followers seem to have culinary experts they've come to trust. For example, I find it hard to pick on anything by famed perfectionist Thomas Keller. Same with any cookbook that's been tested over and over again, like those from the late Sheila Lukins. And I've never been able to find fault in a recipe from Tyler Florence or Ina Garten. Whose recipes have you counted on time and time again?

Do You Enjoy Cooking in Other People's Kitchens?

Although it can be tough not knowing where the whisk or baking sheets are, I often find myself making meals in a kitchen that's not my own. I don't mind cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen; I look at it as a challenging adventure and even enjoy wearing the vintage apron that came along with the kitchen! How about you?

If you woke up this morning consumed with the dread that it's Monday, cheer up. It's not any old start to the week. Today is Family Day, and millions of Americans will be preparing and sitting down to dinner with their children. The occasion got me thinking that I need to spend more time with little ones in the kitchen - I rarely do so. What about you? How often do you invite kids into your kitchen?

Does Raw Meat Gross You Out?

A fellow Sugar staffer recently shared stories about her raw meat woes. She can't look at - or touch - raw meat without getting grossed out and feeling nauseated. In particular, skin-on chicken makes her skin crawl, and the juice from red meat leaves her queasy. This got me to wondering: how many of you feel the same way?
