There are exceptions to this generalization, but I usually come home to find my boyfriend waiting for me to whip up a delicious dinner. A couple of nights a month I don't cook, but more often than not I'm the one who makes the meals in the house. What about you - are you doing all the cooking for your loved ones and roommates?

Food Network Aims to Entertain With 2010 Lineup

Looks like Food Network's switching gears to focus less on cooking expertise and more on entertainment. On the roster for 2010: more Brian Boitano, and a new show, Worst Cooks in America.

Worst Cooks in America, which premieres Sunday, Jan. 3, features 12 "hopeless cooks" who are divided into two teams, one under the tutelage of network vet Anne Burrell and the other led by Arizona chef Beau MacMillan.

The show's premise: bad cooks undergo a five-week "culinary boot camp" where they will learn kitchen techniques from Burrell and MacMillan that they must apply in weekly elimination challenges.

After the contestants have been narrowed down to two, they will compete for a grand prize of $25,000 in a final challenge that has them preparing a three-course meal for a panel of food critics who think the dishes have been prepared by chefs Anne and Beau.

For even more entertainment, Brian Boitano fans should also stay tuned for the return of the Olympic medalist, who's back with a second season of the screwball show What Would Brian Boitano Make? in March. Will you tune in to watch either of these shows - or are they too far a departure from the classic cooking shows that once dominated Food Network?

Have You Injured Yourself Cooking?

Last Wednesday while chopping shallots with my shiny new knife, I cut my thumb. Badly. I was really lucky I didn't slice the tip of my thumb off. While this isn't the first time I've hurt myself in the kitchen (I have a scar on my arm from an oven burn), this was by far my most extreme accident. From hot oil to slippery knives, there's plenty of danger in cooking, so do tell: have you hurt yourself in the kitchen?

Although it can be tough not knowing where the whisk or baking sheets are, I often find myself making meals in a kitchen that's not my own. I don't mind cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen; I look at it as a challenging adventure and even enjoy wearing the vintage apron that came along with the kitchen! How about you?

Simple Tip: Rotate Ingredients When Cooking Over Gas

When using an older stove with a flaming gas burner, it's important to rotate the ingredients to ensure even cooking. Last week, while I was helping a friend make risotto cakes, the cake in the center of the pan was done in minutes, but the cakes on the outside were barely browned. Since the heat is strongest directly above the flame, it's only natural for the middle items to cook more quickly.

Although my friend started to worry, I pointed out that if we rotated the cakes to give each one time in the center of the pan, they would evenly brown. The process is slower and requires patience, yet the reward - in our case fully cooked, golden-brown risotto cakes - is worth it. Do you have an old-style gas stove? How do you evenly cook things?

My cousin Caroline is very mature for her 11 years. She is the oldest of four children and loves learning. I'm not sure how much she cooks with her mom, but I thought it would be fun to get her a cooking kit.
