Costa Rican Fruit Cocktail

Recently I visited Costa Rica. One of my first stops was a local farmers market set up in a small plaza in the town of Quepos. It was a bustling place with a variety of stands: fruit, flowers, vegetables and makeshift restaurants serving local fare. Amongst many known fruits and vegetables were plenty foreign and exotic variations - all a must try. My two new favorites were the mammones and guaba. To meet all the fruits of Costa Rica, just hit the "Start" button.

Wanna Beat Your Rival? Serve Up a Bigger Vat!

Yesterday, over 80 chefs gathered together to make a giant vat of Gallo Pinto. The dish, which is considered to be the national dish of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, is a mix of beans and rice fried together with spices. The reason for the giant vat? Try the first Gallo Pinto National Festival in San José, Costa Rica. To celebrate the event, they created enough gallo pinto - over 4,400 pounds of black beans and 4,000 pounds of rice - to feed 30,000 people. The main reason for the quantity was to defeat Nicaragua's record of serving up 20,000 people the year before!

Come Party With Me: Technicolor Luau - Invite

Every Summer FabSugar hosts a luau. Since Fab is so fashion-forward, the theme is not your typical Hawaiian-shirt extravaganza; each year she picks a different style for the luau. Last July she threw a sophisticated black-and-white soirée, and next month, she's going vibrant with a technicolor luau. Fab and I often collaborate on parties and this time will be no different. I'm doing the planning and cooking, she's doing the hosting. To get things started, I had to make Fab an invite. Learn how I made the one seen here and read more.

After spending some time in Costa Rica, Fab was totally inspired by aquatic life, so we browsed pictures of jellyfish and came across these amazing images.

Once I had several pics, I dragged and dropped them into Photoshop. I flipped one of the images upside down and copied it into a blank file three times. Then I took another image (one with plenty of room to write the text) and pasted this on top of the jellyfish. Next I inserted the following text:

Surf's Up...at FabSugar's Technicolor Luau
You're invited to have a tropical blast!

Saturday, August 15
9 p.m.
Fab's Grotto
San Francisco

Wear your loudest, freshest, hottest gear.
Neon encouraged.

Bring your preferred poison

I sent the invitation to Fab and she helped make several edits. Once we were both satisfied with the look, I saved it as a JPEG. Fab can upload the image to Evite or pingg, or simply send attached to an email.

Have you ever hosted a luau? How did you invite your friends?

Cheers To Traveling!

We ran our first installment of travel week a few months ago, and had so much fun we wanted to do it again! This week we'll bring you recipes from around the world, so be prepared for tasty dishes from awesome places. To get you prepared for our journey we thought it would be fun to learn how to toast in different languages. When traveling, knowing how to say "cheers" in the language of your destination country is a great way to meet people, converse with waiters and bartenders and show the locals that you have embraced the customs.

In China they say Ganbei which translates literally to mean "dry glass."

In France they say A votre santé which translates as "to your health."

In Germany they say Prosit which means, "Here's to you."

In Poland they say Na zdrowie whose translation is, "to your health."

In Spain and Mexico they say Salud which translates to mean "health."

In Korea they say Konbai which literally translates to mean "Bottoms up."

In Italy they say Salute , meaning "to your health."

In Ireland they say Slainte which means "cheers."

In Armenia they say Genatz, also meaning "cheers."

In Israel they say L'chaim which translates literally to mean "to life."

In Costa Rica they say Pura vida which means, "pure life."

In Greece they say Sto ieo sou meaning, "to your health."

Please help me out with the list! If you know how to say cheers in a language that's not mentioned, tell us all below!
