Can't Wait For Girl Scout Cookies? Try Girl Scout Ice Cream

Those of you who love Girl Scout Cookies will be happy to know that many of your local Girl Scout troops are taking pre-orders now. The cookies are traditionally sold in early March, but for those of you that can't wait, I spied the seasonal Dryer's/Edy's Girl Scout cookie ice creams at my local Safeway. For a few months only, the ice cream giant produces three flavors of ice cream infused with Girl Scout cookies. My personal favorite is the Samoas, which is Samoas cookies in Caramel Ice Cream with Fudge. However there's also Thin Mint - Thin Mint Cookies in Chocolate Mint Ice Cream - and Tagalongs - Peanut Butter Patties combined with vanilla ice cream and swirls of peanut butter and fudge.

Actually now that I've listed them out, I can't decide! How about you, which flavor do you want to try, and do you think they'll curb your Girl Scout Cookie cravings?

Dreyer's/Edy's Unveil Their New Season of American Idol-Themed Ice Cream

Just in time for the new season of American Idol, the folks at Dreyer's/Edy's have released their "second season" of American Idol flavors. They're urging their customers to check out all five Idol-themed Slow Churned Light flavors, and then vote for their favorite. This year the flavors are:

Cheesecake Diva - cheesecake ice cream, brownie bites, and fudge swirls
Cookies 'n' Dreamz - chocolate ice cream with crunchy chocolate cookies
Mint Karaoke Cookie - mint ice cream with chocolate cookies
Most Orange-inal - vanilla ice cream with orange sorbet swirls
One Split Wonder - banana ice cream with fruit and fudge swirls

You have until May 31 to vote, but if you cast your vote before April 29, you will be entered in a contest to win a trip to the American Idol finale. The winning flavor will end up in the regular Slow Churned Light lineup.

To get the nation ready for the new flavors, last year's American Idol finalists Melinda Doolittle and Chris Richardson will go on a 20-city tour to perform and sample the flavors. They will actually give private living-room tours in each city.

Do any of the flavors strike your fancy? I haven't tried any of them yet, but going on names and descriptions only, I'll have to vote for Most Orange-inal. It sounds like a creamsicle in an ice-cream format!

More Almost Free Ice Cream!

Seems like this is the season for Free Ice Cream! This Saturday, May 19, from 1-5 pm all Stop & Shop and Giant Food locations will be offering free scoops of Edy's ice cream. That is free if you donate a dollar to The Jimmy Fund, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center or the Children's Cancer Foundation.

"This promotion brings new meaning to 'Triple Winner'," said Stop & Shop and Giant Food President and CEO Jose Alvarez. "By being a part of Free Scoop Day, customers receive a tasty treat and they will get the satisfaction of supporting a terrific cause."

I'm pretty sure all Stop & Shops and Giant Foods are located on the east coast, so no free ice cream for me. If you do go, be sure to get a scoop of the Triple Winner flavor - the limited edition flavor is only available at Stop & Shop & Giant Food stores.

Sorry Folks, the Hydrox Cookie Is Dead

When I say two chocolate cookies with a thick, sweet white layer sandwiched between them, most of you will immediately think of Oreo cookies. However, there's a small percentage of folks who think of the Hydrox cookie instead. The Hydrox - originally produced by Sunshine Biscuits, then Keebler, and finally Kellogg's - debuted in 1908, four years before the Oreo.

Fans like them for several reasons, one being that they stand up better in milk, and the feud is often compared to Pepsi/Coke. Either you're a "Droxie" person or you're an Oreo person. Interestingly, a taste test done in 1988 by Advertising Age showed that 29 tasters voted for Hydrox and 16 voted for Oreo.

Yet despite the devotion of its fans and the taste test win, the Hydrox cookie has gone the way of the dinosaur. For the last several years, Hydrox cookies have been harder to find, and a report from the Wall Street Journal is confirming that the Hydrox cookie is dead. Fans of the product have voiced their opinions, but at this time Kellogg's has no plan on bringing the cookie back. They have, however, confirmed that the Hydrox still lives in "crushed cookie form" as a mix-in for yogurt and ice cream - many fans have noted sightings in several brands such as Edy's/Dreyer's and Carvel.

TV Dinners: Desperate Housewives - Crab Cakes

On Sunday night's episode of Desperate Housewives, there was a very funny party scene where crab cakes played a key role in Edie discovering Carlos' affair. While BuzzSugar was a little disgusted by this scene, it actually made me want to make mini crab cakes!

The crab cakes were served as delicious appetizers at Bree's baby shower, and they make a scrumptious hors d'oeuvre or first course at just about any type of party. For the recipe and to watch the clip from the show, read more

Mini Crab Cakes
From Wild Oats

1 lb. lump crabmeat
1/2 stick unsalted butter
1/2 small onion, finely chopped
1/8 c. red pepper, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
2 eggs
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. paprika
4 to 10 drops hot sauce
2 Tbsp. tartar sauce
2 slices of day oldwhite bread, torn into small pieces
sea salt and pepper to taste
1/2 c. Panko breadcrumbs
1 organic lemon, cut into wedges
Cocktail Sauce, for serving

Heat one-tablespoon butter in sauté pan. Add onions, red pepper and garlic. Sauté until soft, about 3 minutes. Allow to cool.
Whisk together eggs. Worcestershire sauce, paprika, hot sauce, tartar sauce and cooked vegetables.
Gently fold in crab and bread. Lightly form mixture into silver dollar sized crab cakes.
Place on a baking sheet and chill for one hour.
Heat remaining butter in sauté pan over medium heat. Press breadcrumbs into crab cakes. Cook for 2 minutes per side.
Serve hot with lemon wedges and cocktail sauce.

Makes 12 cakes.

You know how much I love exclusive specialty cocktails so when I was sent the recipe for The Star Lounge of New York City's fresh new Spring drink I was giddy with excitement. The Star Lounge is right below the famed Chelsea Hotel, a 70s hotspot and one time home to Edie Sedgwick and Jimi Hendrix. Not only was I thrilled to be able to try out and share a new recipe with you but this one came with something special: a bottle of vodka! Level vodka is smooth and clean and works wonderfully in the cocktail although you can substitute your go-to brand. This drink would be great for a themed party punch and its vibrant cranberry color makes it look as tempting as it tastes. Startini
From The Star Lounge

1½ parts vodka (suggested: Level)
1 part Cointreau
½ part Dekuyper Crème de Peche
1 part Sour Mix
Splash of Cranberry Juice
Star Fruit Garnish

Combine all ingredients over ice.
Shake and strain into a martini glass.
Serve up and enjoy.
