The biggest St. Patrick's Day weekend celebrations have passed, but Spring has reared its head, and the festivities will go on. Whether it's celebrating the Persian new year or learning how to pour the perfect Sidecar, there's something happening on your side of town.

There are plenty of foods to focus on during that transitory phase between Winter and Spring: cold-weather pleasures like fresh maple syrup, planting Summer seeds, new seasonal vegetables. From maple syrup to strawberries to seafood, the world is your oyster. Personally, I'd love to be in New York to watch Top Chef's Bryan and Michael Voltaggio face off at the James Beard House.

One the events I was most excited about attending last weekend at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival was a happy hour hosted by Sandra Lee. It wasn't the hostess that I was anticipating, however, but the location: late fashion designer Gianni Versace's villa, Casa Casuarina. The party went from 5 to 7 on Saturday, and upon arrival, I was grossly disappointed.

A low-key, laid-back week is exactly what the doctor ordered, especially before another raucous holiday hits home. Enjoy a cold one in Tempe, AZ, and Bryan, TX — or, if you're in the Midwest, learn about crafting maple syrup at the National Maple Syrup Festival. Where will you find yourself eating and drinking away the week?

Last night the festivities at the Food Network's annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival kicked off with the highly anticipated Burger Bash hosted by Rachael Ray. The line to get inside stretched from the beach to the street and the place was packed. There were celebrity chefs and well-known food personalities everywhere: serving burgers (Bobby Flay, Daniel Boulud, and Michael Symon), mingling with the crowds (Anne Burrell, Sam Talbot, Sandra Lee), and judging the competition (Art Smith and Carla Hall).

It's the dead of Winter, but if you look hard enough, there's plenty of partying to be had. Put on your Stetson and head to my favorite event, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, for an epic barbecue competition. Or, for a true snout-to-tail experience, check out Cochon 555 in the Napa Valley.

If you didn't get your fill of revelry in the past couple of days, there's an array of eclectic eating and drinking events around the country to look forward to. Savor a blend of California and Basque cuisine on the East Coast, enjoy an homage to dates in Southern California, or rub elbows with international Slow Food leader Carlo Petrini over a family-style dinner in Atlanta.
What events will you partake in this week?

With Olympics viewing parties, Valentine's Day dinners, and Chinese New Year celebrations, there'll be a lot of eating this weekend. Add to that the lagers at SF Beer Week, the seafood at Confluence, and an International Pancake Day celebration, and you've got a blast of a week ahead. Where will you be eating and drinking?

While the world gears up for next week's Winter Games, the culinary industry is waiting with bated breath for its own version of the Olympics: the Bocuse d'Or.
This Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, 12 semifinalists will compete for one coveted position on the Bocuse d'Or USA team.

February is off to a great start. When the Winter gets blue, get thee to a chocolate, wine, or beer festival stat. There are many to choose from this week, and they span the continental US from Beer Week in San Francisco to the Chocolate Lovers Festival in Fairfax, VA.
