Cows Eat Candy Too

Turns out that while corn-based ethanol fuel might be a good fuel alternative, it's actually causing candy to be a good livestock feed alternative. Due to the recent demand of ethanol, corn prices have gone up, forcing farmers to find an alternative source of food for their livestock.

Dwight Hess, a cattle feedlot operator in Marietta, Pa., is located in the heart of snack country, near Hershey and Herr Foods Inc., a maker of potato chips, pretzels and snack mixes. His cattle ration consists of about 17% "candy meal," a blend of chocolate bars and large chunks of chocolate; 3% of what he calls "party mix," a blend of popcorn, pretzels, potato chips and cheese curls; 8% corn gluten; and the remainder corn and barley he grows.

I guess we're not the only ones enjoying National Candy Month?

Also, I wonder how it affects the flavor of the meat. Do you think things would have sweeter or saltier undertones?

Fargo Made a Lot of Pancakes, Ya Know

This weekend, the folks of Fargo, North Dakota, decided they wanted to be famous for something other than being the setting for a Coen Brothers' film. So this past Saturday, the folks of Fargo got themselves in the Guinness Book of World Records. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fargo Kiwanis Club's Pancake Karnivale, the Kiwanis club members and volunteers served up 34,818 pancakes, making them the largest pancake feed in the world. This bested the former world record holder - The Lions Club of Lubbock, Texas - by more than 4,000 pancakes. Personally I think this beats those "world's largest" records, because at least it doesn't seem like a huge waste of food. On the downside, I'd hate to be there for cleanup duty. What do you guys think of this pancake feeding frenzy?

Perhaps the most-loved variety of Winter squash, butternut squash is to Thanksgiving what pumpkin is to Halloween: ubiquitous. Reasonably priced and versatile, with a long shelf life, these mild, vibrantly-hued veggies are at their best during the cold days ahead. When selecting, look for squash free of bruises, feel heavy for their size, and have a matte skin. Those with wider necks and smaller bulbs will have the most flesh. Because of its rigid exterior, butternut squash has an extended shelf life, and storing it for longer - up to a month, unrefrigerated, in a cool, dark place - can bring out its sweetness. Is Cooking a Way to Heat up a Date?

Being single, I've had my fair share of online dating experiences. However no online dating service seems as exciting as this cooking show that FitSugar told me about. The interesting website - Feed Me, the Brooklyn Cooking Dating Show - invites two singles into the kitchen. They cook together, and the date is filmed and then posted for all to see on the site.

I love the concept behind this idea: that food and cooking can bring two people together. However, you won't see me on an episode anytime soon - the service is for New York residents only.

It did get me thinking about cooking and the effect it can have on romantic relationships. What do you think about the service? Is cooking a way to heat up a date?

Sink Your Teeth Into Blood-Orange Sorbet

Inspired by the vampire-themed party, I decided to make my own bloody, yet delicious, treat. With Halloween only a few days away, I pulled out the ice-cream maker and started on a blood orange and mint sorbet - a perfect treat for your fangtastic friends! Although the last time I made ice cream, I had a problem with curdling custard, making this sorbet was easier and much less risky.

I started with a mint-infused simple syrup. While it cooled, I pulled out my glass citrus press (just like my grandmother had!) and hand-juiced the blood oranges. Even with the manual juicing, the whole process is quite quick and in only a few hours, I had refreshing and flavorful sorbet. Do You Feed Animals Food?

I do not feed animals food. I'm not talking about domestic pets, like dogs or cats, I'm talking about wild, untamed animals. Sea gulls on the beach, squirrels in a park, bears in the forest, deers in a meadow - those sort of animals. I prefer not to feed them as they always come back in larger groups wanting more. As cute as they may be, I believe they are best left untouched by humans. How about you: Do you feed animals food?
