Five Honeymoon Ideas For Foodies

Yesterday I gave you some tips about scoring restaurant reservations on your honeymoon, but how about planning an entirely food-centric getaway? Many galloping gourmets choose a destination city known for its dining - think Las Vegas, New York, and London - but you can also take it a step further and give your whole honeymoon a culinary flavor. Here are five honeymoon ideas for food-loving couples.

Plan a getaway at a cooking school. Many of the world's top culinary academies offer vacations that combine cooking instruction with relaxation.
Choose a resort with cooking classes. Just interested in a slight food focus? Some upscale resorts, such as the Four Seasons, offer one-off cooking courses that you can take during a stay.

Traverse a food and wine region. Rather than just picking a city with great restaurants, tour a region known for its gastronomical delights, such as California's Napa Valley, New York's Hudson Valley, Tuscany, or the Australian wine country.
Buy a culinary travel package. If you don't want to plan your own tour, there are a number of companies, such as Culinaria and Artisans of Leisure that offer package tours designed with foodies in mind and focused specifically on the wine and food of different regions.
Get away with a private chef. If a relaxing beach or wilderness vacation is more your thing, rent a private villa or house and hire a private chef to cook for you for a week.

Would You Say Yes to a Cupcake Proposal?

I was browsing the YumSugar Community - brides to be: did you know there is an entire group devoted to Wedding Talk? - when I stumbled across these adorable cupcakes. Reader and foodie Kbussanich says that her boyfriend surprised her with the proposal and cupcakes!

The cakes were created by the Flour & Sun Bakery in Pleasantville, NY, and were a mix of chocolate and vanilla cake with vanilla icing that was dyed bright blue. When she heard Kbussanich's answer was yes, the bakery's owner sent over an engagement gift of seasonal (pumpkin and apple with cream cheese frosting) cupcakes. While I'm not a fan of public proposals, the idea of cupcakes at home is incredibly sweet. What do you think? Would you say yes to a cupcake proposal?

Find the Best Food on Your Honeymoon

If you're a foodie who's headed out on a honeymoon, you're probably more worried about booking restaurant reservations than you are about booking a massage. After all, we wouldn't want to travel to exotic locales and miss out on the culinary highlights, would we? Thankfully, finding and securing the right restaurant reservations on your honeymoon just takes some planning. Here are some tips to help you along, whether you're going on a postwedding vacation or just traveling any old time.

If fine dining is important to you, choose a destination known for its foodie appeal, such as New York, London, or Spain.
If a "must-eat" is on your list, book it as soon as you book your trip. Particularly if it's a destination restaurant, think about getting reservations months and months in advance. Remember to confirm your reservations before you leave.
If you don't have a place in mind, start researching the best restaurants after you've decided on your honeymoon destination. Special magazine issues, such as Food and Wine's The Go List, are great for finding ideas, as is the New York Times travel dining guide. The forums on Chowhound are also a helpful resource.

Don't limit yourself to restaurants described as "romantic." Especially in touristy areas, you might be better off selecting a restaurant that's highly regarded for its food. A very fine-dining experience can be incredibly romantic without the cheesy trappings that can come with "romantic" dining.
Make sure the restaurant you've chosen will be open during your stay. Renovations, management changes, and holidays are some reasons why they might be closed.
Secure a few important reservations in advance, but leave a few nights open for restaurants you discover after arriving. Ask the concierge at your hotel for good local spots or, better yet, ask the employees who live nearby. Walk around the area where you are staying and see if anything catches your eye.
Also, don't be shy about telling the restaurant that you're on your honeymoon. They might be willing to pull out some special stops to help celebrate your special occasion.

Wedding Trend Alert: Couples Showers

If bridal showers just aren't your style, consider hosting a couples shower. Coed, or "Jack and Jill" showers - in which the groom invites his male friends and family - are becoming more and more common. Think of a couples shower more like an engagement party. Host the party on the weekend and choose a menu that will please both men and women. For more tips on hosting a couples shower, read more.

At a bridal shower, alcohol may not play an important role, but at a couples shower be sure to offer guests cocktails.
Plan the party around a theme, event, or activity. If you or your fiancé are foodies host a cooking class, wine tasting, or mixologist bar shower. Attending a sporting event or hosting a tournament is fun for adventurous, athletic couples.
The present opening ceremony is optional. If you prefer, open them later in privacy. However, be sure to send thoughtful, prompt thank you notes.
Remember a shower is a chance for everyone to get to know each other before the wedding, so encourage mingling.
Finally, it's your party so do what you want. If a Mexican themed fiesta with a mariachi is what you love, go for it!
