Beer Pager: Love It or Hate It?

Tailgaters, I think you'll agree: there's nothing worse than reaching for your can of beer after a short booze breather, only to find a sea of half-consumed containers staring back at you. But now you can call on this genius beer pager. At the push of a button it beckons with a flashing light and, rather fittingly, rips a gratifying belch. Do you think it's frivolous - or entertaining and functional?

NFL-Themed Stuffed French Toast: Love It or Hate It?

Another? Celebrating at IHOP. Eat Me Daily has pointed out that the pancake chain has teamed up with the NFL to offer "the ultimate fan fuel for football enthusiasts": football-shaped stuffed French toast. There's a cream-stuffed cinnamon raisin French toast with strawberry topping for AFC fans, and a blueberry compote counterpart for NFC fans. How did football fans ever live without cheesiness?

Chick-Fil-A Shows Spirit With Chicken Sandwich Giveaway

Yet another reason to love Labor Day? Free food. To commemorate its second annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff football game, which takes place Sept. 5, fast food chain Chick-fil-A is giving out free Original Chicken Sandwiches to any customer wearing sports-related apparel on Labor Day, Sept. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The promo, which takes place at Chick-fil-A locations nationwide, states that acceptable sports clothing includes any article or accessory with a sports team logo. Not a sports fan? There's still a way for you to score: Go to this spinoff website and sign up to receive a coupon for a free sandwich. If you're one of the first 250,000, you'll also land a coupon for a free Coke Zero.

I no longer live near a Chick-fil-A, but if I were nearby, I'd definitely be in for one of the chain's signature crispy chicken sandwiches. What about you?

Source

Come Party With Me: Tailgate - Invite

Although I'm not the most interested follower of football season, I love to tailgate. For my first tailgate of the season, I've decided to do something a little different. Instead of serving a classic menu, I'm going to do a dip-themed party. Before I can look for recipes, I have to make and send the invitations. To learn how I made the easy, emailable invites shown here, read more.

To make a similar invite you will need the following supplies:

image of your team in action

computer

Photoshop

To assemble the invite:

Start by dragging the image into Photoshop.

Create a new blank file.

Copy and paste the image into the file. Shrink to fit so the image is inside a border.

With the eye-dropper tool select a color from the image. Since Cal's colors are blue and gold I chose the gold. Fill in the border with the paint bucket tool, so the outside is all one color.

Insert a text box and write out the details of the party. For my invite I wrote the following message in size 6, Handwriting Dakota font:

Are you ready for some football?
Please help me cheer on the California Golden Bears!

Saturday October 4, 2008
Tailgate: 12 noon Gametime: 3 pm

Berkeley, CA
call for exact location: 415.555.5555

Check the text for spelling and grammar mistakes. Save as a jpeg.

Attach as an email and send to all of your friends. Or upload to an evite web page and invite friends that way. Alternately, print out on thick white cardstock and send in an addressed envelope.

Source

To promote the start of college football season and the inaugural Chick-fil-A College Kickoff game, Chick-fil-A is giving away its new and improved (that is, larger) Chick-n-Strips for free on Labor Day, Sept.1.

The catch? While you don't have to get decked out in a cow suit, the deal only stands for customers who show up wearing football team attire. Wear any football team logo and get one free order of Chick-n-Strips (three count) anytime from 10:30 a.m. to close at participating locations.

Have you tasted the chicken from this cult favorite? Will you be trying to score some free chicken strips?

Turkey Chili Two Ways - Beginner & Expert

In my opinion, every home cook should know how to make a good chili. With its hearty beans and spicy sauce, it's a comforting American classic that can be served at many different functions, so it's insane not to have a recipe (or three) in your repertoire. It's easy to adjust the quantity of a chili recipe, it travels well, and the stuff is a genuine crowd pleaser. If you are short on time and skill, try my beginner recipe, and if you have time to soak the beans over night, practice with the expert recipe. Choose which one suits your needs when you read more

Beginner Turkey Chili
From Kraft Foods

1/2 lb. ground turkey or lean ground beef
1 can (28 oz.) tomatoes, undrained, cut up
1 jar (16 oz.) thick 'n chunky salsa
1 can (15 oz.) black beans, drained, rinsed
1 can (15 oz.) red kidney beans, drained, rinsed
1 can (15 oz.) great Northern beans, drained, rinsed
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 pkg. (8 oz.) Shredded Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese

Cook ground turkey in large saucepan on medium-high heat until cooked through, stirring occasionally.

Add tomatoes, salsa, beans and seasonings; mix well. Bring to boil.

Reduce heat to low; simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve topped with cheese.

Serves 8.

3 tablespoons cornmeal
3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 (10-ounce) cans Ro'tel Diced Tomatoes and Green Chiles (original), undrained
2 (4-ounce) cans diced green chiles, undrained
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cilantro stems
1/4 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves
Sour cream, for serving
Grated Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, for serving
Chopped green onions, for serving

In a large kettle, soak beans in cold water to cover by 2 inches overnight.

Drain beans in a colander and return to kettle with enough water to cover by 2 inches. Cook beans at a bare simmer until just tender, about 1 hour, and drain in a colander.

In a skillet, heat the oil and saute the onion and jalapeno until soft and beginning to caramelize, 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes.

Add the ground turkey, Southwest Essence, chili powder, salt, cumin, oregano, and bay leaf and cook, stirring occasionally, until turkey is browned and cooked through, 6 minutes.

Add the cornmeal and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes.

Add the chicken broth, canned tomatoes, canned chiles, and cilantro stems and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook, uncovered, for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After it has cooked for 30 minutes, add the cooked beans. Add the heavy cream and cilantro leaves and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes longer.

Serve the chili in deep bowls, garnished with dollops of sour cream, grated Cheddar cheese, and green onions to taste.

Serves 4-6.

Emeril's Southwest Seasoning:
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons paprika
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon dried oregano

Combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Print recipe with images | without images

Come Party With Me: Tailgate - The Look

Decorating a tailgate is a no brainer. Get everything in your team's school colors; I'm supporting the California Golden Bears so my party will have a blue and gold color scheme. Start by getting as many folding chairs and tables as you can. Use patterns to create depth in an outdoor parking lot setting. Get striped lawn chairs and a checkered tablecloth. Hang streamers from cars or nearby trees to mark your (insert team mascot here) territory. For a uniform look across the tables, get plastic silverware, cups, plates and paper napkins all in the same color scheme. Throw in any special extras: fresh flowers, beer buckets with your school's name, banners that depict a team cheer, etc. Don't forget your portable football shaped grill! Happy tailgating!

Come Party With Me: Tailgate - Invites

The biggest game of the year for the California Golden Bears is against their lifelong rival Stanford. Since I was a cheerleader for Cal, I plan on giving my all for "The Big Game." This year the game is at Stanford - aka The Farm - which means it's time for my biennial tailgate! I go all out with lots of blue and gold, and tons of food and drinks. The game is not until Saturday, December 1, but I want to get the invites out now. This way people have time to make travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, and purchase tickets. To see how I made this postcard invite, one that you can adapt to suit your team's colors and mascots, read more

To make an invitation similar to the one seen here you will need the following supplies:

white cardstock

scissors

glue

mascot image

computer & printer

To assemble the invite:

Create a new Word document. Drag the mascot image into the document. Decorate accordingly with any phrases or cheers from your home team. Cal's mascot is the bear so I used an image of a ferocious and powerful bear. Since UC Berkeley was the first college in California, it has adopted the name California or Cal for short. I put a big California in blue and gold underneath the bear, but get creative! Print out a test copy and once satisfied, print out on the white cardstock.

Open another blank Word document. Write out the details of the gameday. Make sure the font is not centered, but to the left because you want the invite to be a functional postcard. I changed the font to dark blue and wrote, in Stone Sans ITC TT-Bold font,

It’s that time of year again...
Big Game time!
Come cheer on the Cal Golden Bears!

Saturday, December 1, 2007
Tailgate Starts @ Noon
Game Starts @ 4 pm

Tailgate field next to the Stadium
(Exact location details TBA)
Stanford, Palo Alto, CA

Blue, gold, and white attire required.
No RED allowed.

Print out a test copy and check for grammar and spelling mistakes. Once satisfied, print out on the white cardstock.

Cut the front of the postcard invite with the mascot image down to size.

Turn over and glue the text to the back. Cut this down to the same size as the front.

I added an axe to separate the text from the address on the back of the postcard. According to Big Game legend, the winner of the game takes home the axe. Cal won last year so we continue to be in possession of the axe! If your team has a tradition along these lines incorporate it into the invite!

With a sparkly pen and your best handwriting, write out the address of your guests. Stamp and send!

View 26 Photos ›

Let's Dish: What Will You Eat During the Super Bowl?

I've always looked forward to the Super Bowl. Not because I'm a huge football fan, but because I'm a foodie. It's an excuse to unashamedly devour nachos, chili and buffalo wings. Anything excessive, spicy, unhealthy, and cheesy is welcome on the Super Bowl table.

This year I'm thinking about serving either an Italian menu (with pepperoni pizza dip and Italian sausage meatball sandwiches) or a more traditional menu (with guacamole and cheddar beer soup).

How about you? What's on your Super Bowl menu? If you aren't cooking, what do you plan on eating while you watch the game?

Source
