Join Us Today For Park(ing) Day!

In case you weren't aware, today is Park(ing) Day, a yearly event where businesses and volunteers take the time to construct parks in parking spaces in an effort to make the world a greener place.

We'll be hosting a special taste challenge at CasaSugar's Sweet Spot Park, so stop by between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. today to participate. CasaSugar's Sweet Spot Park will be in downtown San Francisco from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Howard Street between 2nd Street and New Montgomery. In addition to our fun, one lucky winner will be walking away with a $1,000 IKEA gift card courtesy of CasaSugar, and geeksugar will be on hand to show you the latest in solar technology.

World famous chef Heston Blumenthal, of England's The Fat Duck (which is currently ranked as the #2 restaurant in the world), is creating a new experience for his lucky customers. When they order his new dish "Sound of the Sea," they'll also get to use an iPod to experience soothing ocean tracks while eating. I dunno guys, what do you think? The sea sounds fine, but what's the next level. Do I really want to hear farm life while eating beef or chicken? - geeksugar

The Machine Project's Dorkbake

Alright, so maybe I should have passed this news on to geeksugar instead of writing my own post, but I couldn't resist! The folks over at the Machine Project are hosting a "dorkbake" bake-off and I just had to share the news.

Now you're probably asking yourself, what's a "dorkbake"? Well, it's a bake-off where the contestants have to have a killer recipe, but, there are a few small catches. One: they'll only be able to use ingredients off a pre-determined list, and two: they have to bring their own HOMEMADE 100-watt light bulb heated oven. Yep, that's right, they have to make their OWN easy-bake styled oven!

The event takes place in Los Angeles on Feb. 3rd and will be judged on engineering, tastiness and presentation. I wish I could be there, this sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

If you live in the Los Angeles area, you should check this out and report back to all of us! Or better yet, enter (it only costs $13.37 to register) and come up with your own "easy-bake" creation.

Off to Market Recap: Vegetarian Cookbook

I'm going to spend the weekend at a girlfriend's beach house. To thank her for hosting me, I want to give her a new cookbook. Technically she's a pescaterian, but I think she would benefit from a book that focuses on vegetarian cuisine. I asked you to help me by looking for new or classic cookbooks that are full of healthy, innovative, vegetarian recipes. Since I want a tome that features tons of reliable recipes, I plan on getting her Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian.

If you've ever cracked open a fortune cookie - and I bet you have - then see this book in your future. Far more satisfying than those sugary slips of paper, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, by New York Times reporter Jennifer 8. Lee, explores the American obsession with Chinese food, from delightful trivia to dark realities.

Considering the US has more Chinese restaurants than McDonalds, Burger Kings, and Wendy's combined, it makes sense that the cuisine comes with a stir-fry of great stories. Lee begins her journey with the tale of how the Powerball lottery was once almost brought down by a set of lucky numbers printed in dozens of fortune cookies. She follows with fun facts about the origins of the cookies, as well as of chop suey and General Tso's chicken. But this book isn't as lighthearted as you might think
