Summer Reading: Milk Eggs Vodka

I don't know about you guys, but I love making lists - mostly so I can cross things off of them. One of my favorite lists to whip up is a grocery list. Milk. Eggs. Butter. Candy. More Candy.

When I'm done with the list, I usually just toss it out in the recycling. However one or two may have accidentally been left in the shopping cart. Luckily for author Bill Keaggy, I'm not the only one who ever left a shopping list behind. In his new book Milk Eggs Vodka: Grocery Lists Lost and Found Keaggy has compiled hundreds of found shopping lists for your viewing enjoyment. The book, which is divided into 20 different types of lists (just plain funny, "badd spellrs", organized lists, etc.) is a fun look into other people's lives and will make for a great coffee table book or gift.

And if an entire book full of other people's shopping lists wasn't enough for you, then be sure to check out his website, grocerylists.org. There's over 1500 lists to choose from. I chose the one on the right because of the line "Bubble Gum if Alexis is good."

Supermarket Smarts: Make a List

I love grocery shopping. OK I confess: I love all kinds of shopping, grocery included. I would get super excited when my dad would invite me to purchase the food with him. He taught me his organized system for grocery shopping and now I can maneuver my way through the store swiftly and efficiently. Start by making a list of all of the ingredients you need. The most important thing about this list is to arrange it in sections by thinking of the sections of a grocery store. Put all of your produce on one portion of the page, dairy on another, meats on another, pantry goods in another, and so on and so forth. If you are familiar with your grocery store lay out create your list according to the market's floor plan. At my Safeway I like to start in the produce section and make my way through the back of the store stopping to pick up chicken, bacon, frozen goods, milk, cheese, wine, and bread along the way. Having a list in your hands will also keep you from purchasing impulse foods that aren't good for your wallet or your weight. Once you get used to shopping with your list you will realize that you can be in and out of the grocery store in no time and you might just find you actually enjoy your walks down the super market aisles.

Thanksgiving Tip: Make a List or Two

If you have not begun to think about Thanksgiving, stop what you are doing, grab a pad and a pen, and make a list. Or twenty.

Start with the menu; if you are designating certain courses to friends or families do so on the list. Continue with the guest list, the things you want to get accomplished before Thursday - polish silver, buy a roasting rack, etc. - and the decorations. Plan out any other meals you may be making during that week.

Finally, make the most important list of all, the grocery list. Carefully read through each recipe and write down all the ingredients you will need. Use one sheet of paper for groceries you can buy in advance and another sheet for last minute things that will need to be picked up the day before or that morning. Once you have finished a task be sure to cross it off the list; after all, it's the most satisfying part of making a list!

Come Party WIth Me: Golden Globes Viewing - Music and More

My Golden Globes Viewing party is just three short days away. I'm so excited I feel as though I really am attending the show! Things have come together quite nicely, my girlfriend's have already received their invites, the menu and drinks are planned, and the decorations are in order. I'm ready to party, but there is one tiny aspect left, the music.

Since this party revolves around watching a show on TV, music is not super important. Instead of fretting about the music, make arrangements to view the show on your largest and best television. There needs to be comfortable seating for all of your guests and maybe a blanket or two in case the girls want to curl up after dinner.

This party doesn't need a playlist, it needs a grocery list and I've put one together for us. If you plan on hosting my Golden Globe party, be sure to check out the grocery list. read more

In October of last year, Mother's unexpectedly closed its doors.
Then, in December, Kellogg's purchased the rights to Mother's Cookies, which is why in a matter of days the snacks will be back in grocery stores where they rightfully belong.
Celebrity Chefs Share Recession Tips With Oprah

Yesterday celebrity chefs Tyler Florence, Cat Cora, and Curtis Stone made an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The chefs shared recipes and tips on how to cook more affordably during the recession. They also went into the kitchen of viewers to perform culinary interventions. Stone helped a couple cut their takeout budget by learning to cook, Cora taught a family how to use fresh ingredients to make healthy dishes, and Florence showed a mom the best way to feed her children. The chefs provided some great suggestions on how to save money when grocery shopping. For their ideas, read more.

Use a lesser cut of meat. A whole chicken is cheaper than chicken breasts. Opt for pork shoulder instead of pork tenderloin.

Use a slow cooker. They're ideal for turning lesser cuts of meat into fantastic dinners.

Purchase a whole block of cheese and grate it yourself. In the end its cheaper than buying the pregrated bags.

Be smart at the meat counter. According to Stone, steaks that are nearing their sell-by date are usually marked down.

Select cheaper fish. Skip salmon and choose tilapia.

Always shop with a list. Cora says that people spend 50 percent more if they don't have a list.

Buy only what you need. If you want three bananas, break off three from the bunch.

Plan meals that share ingredients.

How do you save when at the supermarket? Please share your helpful hints below!

What Kind of Garlic Do You Cook With?

One of the ingredients on her grocery list was frozen crushed garlic. I was surprised and wondered why she didn't use fresh garlic. Apparently she prefers the crushed variation because it saves time and doesn't leave the smell of garlic on her hands. It got me thinking about alternative forms of garlic.

Or you decided to stock up on it since it's only around once a year.
