Kobayashi Dethrones Chestnut to Become Krystal King

Takeru Kobayashi continues to beef up his competitive eating record. Yesterday, the Japanese speed-eating demon defeated two-year reigning champion Joey Chestnut in the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship in Chattanooga, TN. Before a live televised audience and a crowd of 10,000, Kobayashi crushed the competition by eating 93 Krystal hamburgers in eight minutes over Chestnut's 81. In addition to reclaiming the title, which he's taken four out of six years, the Japanese victor also won $20,000. Although Chestnut won the Square Off last year with a record of 93 hamburgers, Kobayashi set a new standard by adhering to the contest's new rules. This year, Krystal imposed a "no dunking" rule, which prevented eaters from dipping their burgers in liquid. The competitors were also given five Big Angus Burgers at the start of the competition, each equal to five Krystal burgers in size. While I find competitive eating horrifying, I am still in awe of Kobayashi's accomplishment. I don't think I've ever eaten more than a large cheeseburger in one sitting. Would You Eat This Wise Guy Burger?

If the world's largest burger wasn't too much for you, maybe you can appreciate the newest addition to the burgerverse. Grub Street reports that casual chain Red Robin has created a breakthrough called the Wise Guy Burger, which consists of a burger patty, marinara sauce, pepperoni slices, peppers, tomatoes, and yes, mozzarella sticks. Although they say it "just seems wrong" to go there, as a lover of The Palin sandwich at Ike's, I must respectfully disagree. Is it something you'd try?

World's Largest Burger Among New Record-Setting Foods

It's a tale that'll go down in burger history. At an event this week in London, Guinness World Records revealed a host of new record breakers, among them a 185-pound, $499 whopper of a hamburger, which is officially the world's largest. The record belongs to Mallie's Sports Grill and Bar in Southgate, MI. Owner Steve Mallie, who said the bun must be baked for eight hours and the burger for 15 hours, remarked, "Being in the book is the greatest accomplishment we've ever done. I've worked my entire life to build this restaurant and being able to have the notoriety of Guinness makes it just that bit more rewarding."It seems, in today's world, that everything bigger is better. This week alone, Westhoughton, UK, garnered attention for serving the world's most massive English breakfast (10 sausages,10 rashers of bacon, 10 slices of toast, 10 eggs, fives slices of black pudding, and tomatoes, mushrooms, and black beans); Sacramento, CA, made headlines for a 42-foot-long, 1,200-pound tamale; and Valencians in Spain managed to assemble the world's longest restaurant table. At this rate, the next record will need to be for the world's most capable scale. Are these feats, like the Mallie's burger, legendary stuff, or simply gross?

North Korea Opens First Fast-Food Burger Joint - Well, Sort Of

North Korea doesn't merely have beef with the US government - it's also taken issue with America's most iconic food: the hamburger. Although the communist regime and its authoritarian leader, Kim Jong-Il, have long banned any cultural influences considered to be "US imperialist," the country opened its first-ever fast-food restaurant last month. The only thing that won't be served? Burgers.

At the Samtaeseong restaurant in Pyongyang, customers can get a "minced beef with bread sandwich," an order that bears an unmistakable resemblance to the American favorite. The item, which is priced at $1.70 - more than half the average North Korean's daily income - comes with kimchee, or spicy fermented cabbage. Diners can also order sandwiches made of minced fish or vegetables, waffles, and draft beer. In addition, the restaurant will soon serve hot dogs and croissants that have been given Korean names.

My guess is that opening night at Pyongyang's inaugural fast-food joint was probably the talk of the town, although - with the addition of unintentionally of-the-moment kimchee-topped hot dogs to the menu, I'm pretty sure the menu would draw just as much attention in a major US city. What do you make of the situation? Does the renaming of the hamburger seem reminiscent of the "freedom fries" controversy from several years ago? Taste Test: McDonald's Angus Third Pounders

Back in April, McDonald's announced plans to add a premium Angus burger to its fast-food lineup. The burger, priced at $3.99, would compete with other higher-end fast-food burgers such as Carl's Jr.'s Six Dollar Burger and Burger King's XT burger, and was scheduled to roll out nationwide by August. Well, July's barely begun, but yesterday the chain's Angus Third Pounders hit menus across the country.

The burgers, which weigh at least a third of a pound, or 5.33 ounces, before they're cooked, come in a trio of styles, all on a sesame seed bun: Deluxe, with tomato, lettuce, mustard, mayonnaise, red onions, dill pickles, and American cheese; Bacon & Cheese, with ketchup, mustard, red onions, dill pickles, American cheese, and three slices of bacon; and Mushroom & Swiss, with mayonnaise, sautéed mushrooms, and swiss cheese. Bobby Flay Shares Suggestions For Making Supreme Burgers

Audrina Patridge Is New Carl's Jr. Spokesperson

Turns out you don't have to wait for the next season of The Hills to catch more of Audrina Patridge: later this month, she'll be following fellow temptress Padma Lakshmi's lead and starring in a new commercial for Carl's Jr. promoting the chain's Teriyaki Six Dollar Burger.

The Hills regular filmed on location in Malibu, donning a barely there, gold lamé bikini and noshing on burgers while laying on the beach. "It was my first experience shooting a spot with food, and . . . I was literally salivating looking at all the rows and rows of perfect burgers waiting for me," she said.

I'm rather skeptical about burgers being Audrina's "one indulgence." I'll be curious to see if her ad, which airs on June 24 - the same day the burger launches - will be as steamy as Paris Hilton's or Padma's previous Carl's Jr. commercials. Check out the footage below and tell me what you think.
