Last Wednesday while chopping shallots with my shiny new knife, I cut my thumb. Badly. I was really lucky I didn't slice the tip of my thumb off.

Although it can be tough not knowing where the whisk or baking sheets are, I often find myself making meals in a kitchen that's not my own. I don't mind cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen; I look at it as a challenging adventure and even enjoy wearing the vintage apron that came along with the kitchen! How about you?

For years I hated when a recipe required whisking. Not because it hurt my wrist, but because cleaning the whisk was such a pain. Until one day, while doing the dishes, I had a light bulb moment.

A spoon rest is a handy kitchen tool that sits on stovetops. In between sautéing and stirring, it's a safe place to rest the spatula or spoon you're using. Sadly, I don't own one and the other day when I was making macaroni and cheese, I finally decided it's time to invest in this practical kitchen essential.

When using an older stove with a flaming gas burner, it's important to rotate the ingredients to ensure even cooking. Last week, while I was helping a friend make risotto cakes, the cake in the center of the pan was done in minutes, but the cakes on the outside were barely browned. Since the heat is strongest directly above the flame, it's only natural for the middle items to cook more quickly.

My best kitchen knife broke last night while I was making dinner. It wasn't the nicest knife — when I moved into my apartment, over two years ago, my dad gave it to me and bought himself a new (much better) knife. Now I need to purchase a knife, and am considering splurging on a higher-quality, more expensive one.

On average, I shop at Mollie Stone's on California Street in San Francisco twice a week. I've been picking up groceries there since I moved into my current apartment two years ago. Naturally, I've developed a relationship with everyone from the fishmonger to the spirits director to my favorite checkout guy, Travis, who always asks what I'm making.
