Milk, It Does an Appetite Good

In Los Angeles' sea of frozen yogurt, one place dares to offer real ice cream. Milk on Beverly Blvd, is an ice cream parlor/sandwich shop/bakeshop that holds nothing back when it comes to flavor and taste.

Recently, on a trip to LA, my brother and I hit up Milk to try out some of their tasty treats. It was lunch time, but their ice cream parlor menu - check out a pic of it below - was much more captivating, so we skipped straight to dessert. To read about what we ate, read more.

We were hoping to pig out on everything, but we ended up deciding on one treat each. I went for the Milkie Way Malt and my brother ordered the Blondie Sundae. The blondie was absolutely moist and delicious - which surprised me because I am actually not a very big blondie fan - and it went well with the vanilla ice cream, butterscotch and bits of pecan praline. Each bite was rich and decadent, and I liked how the pecans gave it a unique texture.

While it was difficult to pull myself away from the sundae, I knew that the malt wouldn't let me down. The main base was vanilla ice cream blended with malted milk chocolate chips, which was then topped by swirls of caramel and chocolate and then topped with whip cream and malt balls. The flavors paired well together, but it was actually almost too rich and sweet. I definitely wished I had something savory to offset the sweetness. Yet, that didn't stop me from drinking the whole thing, after all, Milk's homemade ice cream was too good to leave any behind.

Have you guys ever been to Milk? If not, I recommend looking it up if you're ever in the Los Angeles area. But if you fall into a sugar-coma afterwards, don't say I didn't warn you.

Ben & Jerry's Renames Flavor in Honor of Gay Marriage

Beginning today, a Vermont law recognizing gay marriage goes into effect - and, to celebrate, ice cream company Ben & Jerry's is renaming popular seller "Chubby Hubby." The new name? "Hubby Hubby."

While Ben & Jerry's isn't changing the labels on "Chubby Hubby" pints sold in stores - revising product labels takes 18 months - a wedding-themed truck will hand out free "Hubby Hubby" ice cream across the state today, including at the Vermont capitol. The creamery's six in-state ice cream parlors will also sell limited-edition "Hubby Hubby" sundaes during the month of September.

Still, the company, which has been known to rename its ice cream flavors after liberal causes, hasn't ruled out the idea of retailing "Hubby Hubby" in the future. “The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love - and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO explained.

In Italy, Obama Daughters Dabble in Gelato-Making

Meet Malia and Sasha Obama, first children - and future gelato makers? While President Obama was in Rome, Italy, for a G-8 summit, the US embassy contacted the Italian capital's most renowned gelato parlor, Giolitti, to arrange an insider's ice cream tour for the commander in chief's daughters. At the historic gelateria, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, donned aprons to become frozen-dessert makers for the afternoon. The sisters, accompanied by their grandmother, made blackberry and banana gelato. According to parlor owner Nazareno Giolitti, "Right after they made gelato, they tasted it straight from the machine, and the youngest one said, "It really tastes like blackberries." The girls, who Giolitti said "ate with great gusto," left with a whopping 6.6 pounds each of their ice cream, and took some home for the first lady.

Giolitti later showed a local television station a tub of some of the blackberry flavor the Obama girls created, saying that the leftover ice cream was immediately picked up by customers who wanted their cones filled with it. If I were him, I would have sold it for a killing on eBay.
