When it comes to foods that are quintessentially all-American, I have to vote for Jell-O pudding. After all, what American schoolkid didn't grow up eating this in a brown-bagged lunch? Now that I can make my own pudding, I steer clear of buying it as an adult, but when I heard that Jell-O was releasing a new line, I couldn't resist trying it out.Kraft describes Temptations by Jell-O as a new line of "layered, indulgent snacks for 150 calories or less per serving." The Temptations line comes in six different-flavored snack cups, and three more mixes that can be whipped up at home. We gave the cups a whirl. Have You Ever Cooked With Gelatin?

The other day I was making panna cotta with my mom. Aside from boxed Jell-O, she's never cooked with gelatin before. When I told her to let the gelatin sit in water, she had a hard time not stirring it. It's a lesson I learned the first time I cooked with gelatin. You have to leave it alone in order for it to bloom. Are you familiar with the ingredient? What have you made with it?

Tired of the same ol', same ol'? Almost every Halloween soiree is guaranteed to offer up candy and caramel covered apples. Take the opportunity to serve up something refreshing, fun and super easy to make. Whip up some Jell-O jigglers in festive colors and shapes. Tots will get fired up to offer a helping hand and mama will delight in the easy clean up and simple recipe.

Pick out colors to suit your fancy. I chose orange and purple for their Halloween spirit and their tasty purposes.
Use the Jell-O jiggler recipe given on the side of the box - it is not the same as regular Jell-O!
When the Jell-O has settled, pull the trays out of the refrigerator and place it on a larger bin or warm water to loosen the bottom of the Jell-O.
For ease, I cut the Jell-O into squares with a wet knife and then removed the pieces and placed them on a level cutting board.
Dip the your cookie cutters into water before using it on the Jell-O -it makes for smoother edges.
Peel the excess away from the cookie cutter and use your spatula to remove the jiggler from the cutting board. Place it on the serving tray.

Gelatin: Love It or Hate It?

Perhaps it's the fact that Julia Child's chart-topping tome, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, features an array of aspics. Maybe it's because we're in an era when gourmands are obsessed with playing with their food. Or the fact that Jell-O is a cheap and cheerful thrill during a sweltering economic downturn. Either way, the retro favorite Jell-O appears poised to make a comeback. Nevertheless, with its jiggly quality and slippery texture, gelatin's always been somewhat of a polarizing food. What do you think of it?

What is the sound of one hand clapping? I don't know, but unfortunately, I now know what the sound of jello shaped like St. Paul's Cathedral sounds like when it wobbles in an anechoic chamber. Says sound artist Douglas Murphy who recorded the sound, "Jelly entices us into a strange but compelling world of organic sounds. The sonic wobble is captured in two ways: by carefully recording the results of gentle coaxing and by expressing the wobble frequency as physically powerful base tones." Whatever, dude!

There's just something about Jello - I don't know if it's the bright colors, the jiggly consistency or the actual flavor, but kids love it. The sugary gelatin dessert can take on just about any shape or form from salads to molds to shots. And, we can't forget the layered squares or jigglers. But, what's a mom to do when she's got a box of the good stuff and nothing to pour it in?

YumSugar tipped me off to this alternate organic presentation. Simply slice an orange, hallow it out and pour the jello in. Once it sets, carefully slice the halves into wedges. Your kids will get a kick out of it.
