Make Your Own: Ketchup and Mustard

With Fourth of July right around the corner and the plethora of red, white, and blue foods, it dawned on me I wanted to try and make my own condiments for the holiday. Essential to slather on burgers and hot dogs, ketchup and mustard are surprisingly simple to make. Both require very little time in the kitchen, but the mustard seeds need two days to soak in vinegar and water.

The exceptional and robust flavor of homemade condiments is incomparable to those brought at the store. I made two different mustards - one made from yellow mustard seeds and the other from black mustard seeds. The yellow mustard is mild, whereas the black is spicy with a wasabi-like taste. The ketchup has a smoky depth thanks to a combination of chili powder, paprika, cinnamon, and allspice. Although I followed the recipes exactly, you could alter the amount of spices to suit your taste buds. To add extra pizazz to your Fourth with homemade ketchup and mustard, keep reading.

A friend once said to me, "I'm hungry for a hamburger. Why? Because I want to eat ketchup." He loves ketchup so much that he'll order food - burgers, fries, etc. - with the specific desire of enjoying ketchup.

I think ketchup is a great condiment, but I've never really doused my food in it. How do you feel about it?

Not Your Regular Nachos: Armenian Chips Cheese

The other day a friend, who recently got back from Armenia, told me about a delicious treat she experienced on her trip. At first I was a little grossed out when she described the potato chip, mozzarella, and ketchup nachos. However, I took her word for it and decided to make my own. Armenian Chips Cheese
Original recipe by PartySugar

Ingredients

1 small bag of potato chips (recommended: Lay's)
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
ketchup

Directions

Arrange a layer of chips on a microwaveable plate. Sprinkle evenly with cheese. Top with remaining chips and the rest of the cheese.
Microwave on high for 30-45 seconds.
Squirt on ketchup and enjoy!

Makes 1 plate of nachos.

Theo Fennell Silver Bottle Sleeve: Love It or Hate It?

When BabySugar showed me this sterling silver ketchup sleeve by British jeweler Theo Fennell, I couldn't help but laugh. Bling for a regular bottle of Heinz is absolutely absurd! While there is a time and place for fabulous excessiveness, at $1800, this silver sleeve is simply too much for me. Do you agree?

Is This Heinz Ad Inappropriate?

In a controversial move, condiment king Heinz has pulled a UK television commercial from the air. Viewers complained that the commercial - which features a single-sex parental relationship - was inappropriate and unsuitable. Nigel Dickie, a spokesman for Heinz, explains why the ad will no longer be aired:

It is our policy to listen to consumers. We recognize that some consumers raised concerns over the content of the ad and this prompted our decision to withdraw it. The ad was meant to be humorous and we apologize to anyone who felt offended.

Considering last week's legalization of gay marriage in California, I think the ad is harmless and in tune with our culture. What do you think? Watch the video below and let me know if you consider this condiment ad inappropriate?

Condiment Candles: Love It or Hate It?

The other day I came across these condiment-shaped citronella candles. Although citronella candles are a must for outdoor dining - they keep the mosquitoes away - I don't know if this ketchup, mustard, and relish set is for me. What if a younger guest mistakes one of these candles for the real thing and gets burned? On the other hand, they're kinda cute and have the potential to spark a mustard vs. ketchup debate. What do you think? Condiment candles: fire hazard or foodie fun?

Condiments can be surprisingly controversial. I just don't understand how some people can hate mustard, for example, while other folks I know would bathe in ketchup if they could. So with all this talk of Memorial Day grilling, I'm wondering which condiment you'd choose.

Heinz Ketchup Goes Gourmet

Ketchup is ketchup right? Tomatoes, sugar some spices. It's a condiment, not a gourmet sauce, right? Wrong! Maybe it's just because the British seemed more refined than the rest of us, but the Daily Mail is reporting that they're about to receive a gourmet Heinz ketchup.

The new "premium" ketchup has taken the chefs at Heinz over a year to perfect and it will cost three times as much as regular ketchup. According to Heinz it is meant to appeal to folks "who want a more sophisticated table sauce to match their palate."

There's no news on whether or not the US leg of Heinz is planning on releasing a similar product, but if they did, would you buy it?
