Come Party With Me: Movie Club Meeting - Invite

Recently my friend Kirin told me about her decision to start a documentary film club. The club will be similar to a book club, but instead of reading and discussing a book, guests will watch and chat about a documentary. I was excited by the idea and volunteered to create a menu for the first meeting, where King Corn will be the featured movie. Since the foodie film focuses on the lifecycle of the crop, Kirin wants the party to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Instead of wasting paper by sending hard invites, she's requested that I make a green email invite. To see how I made the one shown here,

To make a similar invite you will need the following supplies:

image of corn or a corn field
computer

To assemble the invite:

Start by dragging the image into Photoshop. Create a new file and copy and paste the image into the blank file. Center the image to the left and write out the details of the party on the right. For my invite I used the font Calisto MT in size 18 to write the following message:

Dear Friend,

You’ve been selected
to be a part of my
documentary film club.

Please join me for
a screening of
King Corn

A green, vegetarian dinner and a lively discussion
to follow

Wednesday, August 20
6:30 pm

San Francisco

Check for spelling and grammar mistakes.
If desired add a creative background or extra designs.
Once satisfied with the invite, save as a jpeg. Send attached as part of an email. When I send email invites, I like to send the invite to myself first to make sure it sends how I envisioned. Next I send to a mass email list of all invited guests. You can also upload the image to an online invite service like evite or pingg.

King Corn: A Food Documentary to Watch

"Everything on your plate is corn." That line, uttered by an interviewee in King Corn, is essentially the premise behind this new food-focused documentary. Much the way that Super Size Me uses a clever gimmick to take on the fast-food industry, King Corn follows two friends, Ian Cheney and Kurt Ellis, who move to Iowa to find out how this unassuming crop has made its way into so many grocery-store staples in the form of corn syrup, malodextrin, and other not-so-healthy ingredients.

With humor and a vagabond attitude, Cheney and Ellis establish a one-acre corn farm so that they can follow the life cycle of their crop. Along the way, they visit the Midwest's sprawling corn complexes and interview experts about how the highly subsidized crop has become an easy target in the fight against obesity. The movie opened this weekend in New York, and over the next few weeks will be showing in other cities, including LA, San Francisco, Austin, and Chicago. King Corn Coming to Theaters Near You

Corn, it is an ingredient in just about everything. The cob is manufactured into fillers, oils and sweeteners. Many have theorized that the rise in obesity is due to the increased use of high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener. While the jury is still out on that particular connection, many see the corn subsidy as the underlying problem with American food production and agriculture.
In light of all this, two recent college graduates decided to plant an acre of corn in Iowa in an attempt to learn more about the crop that is taking over America. The tale they tell in the documentary King Corn is entertaining, enlightening and funny. Regardless if you have or haven’t read Michael Pollan’s treatise on agriculture in the U.S. - The Omnivore's Dilemma - you should see this film. If you are what you eat, then we are all corn!

Boulder, CO: A Food Mecca in the Rockies

Recently, I found myself with the prospect of being in Boulder, CO, for a long weekend. It was an opportunity that I seized faster than a dog would take leftovers. Aside from being home to the University of Colorado's flagship college campus, Boulder's also known for its food-centric, health-focused, and highly educated population - last year, it was even named America's Foodiest Town by Bon Appétit. I traveled with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty, curious to find out if this town at the foot of the mountains lived up to all its hype. Read on to see where my stomach led me in Boulder.

Taste-Off! Burger King vs. McDonald's Chicken Nuggets

"Crispy. Tender. New," the Burger King website declares of its latest menu item, BK Chicken Tenders. Funny: they might've been new on the BK lineup, but we could've sworn we'd seen them somewhere. Oh, right, on the menu at every McDonald's worldwide for the last three decades as Chicken McNuggets.

Much like the BK Breakfast Muffin was to the McDonald's Sausage McMuffin, the BK Chicken Tenders are near-carbon copies of their Golden Arched counterparts. (When asked to comment, Burger King remarked, "We don't provide details on our secret recipe.")

McDonald's sells its nuggets in packages of four, six, and 10; Burger King's are available in boxes of four, eight, and 20. In our taste test, we learned that just about everything, right down to the packaging, is identical - except, we discovered, with regards to taste. 9 Reasons the Summer Is Making You Fat

Summertime can be so cruel when it comes to the numbers on the scale, and not just because of Summer treats. It's sunny, warm, and gorgeous outside, gardens and grocery stores are bursting with fresh fruits and veggies, you're spending lots of time in the fresh air, but you seem to be putting on weight. What gives? If pounds are piling on, here are nine reasons why.

Ugh, it's too hot to run. Heat and humidity are brutal, so if you can't summon the get-up-and-go to exercise outside, that's what air-conditioned gyms and swimming pools are for.
You could really go for a cold one right about now. Whether it's an ice cold beer, lemonade, sweetened iced tea, fruit smoothie, or margarita on the rocks, all those chilly drinks (especially the alcoholic variety) are full of calories. Drink good ol' ice water or seltzer whenever you're parched.
Another barbecue? Sure. I literally am invited to one barbecue a week, and since I love grilled foods, I just can't say no. Go easy on the beer, chips and dip, potato salad, and ribs smothered in barbecue sauce.
It's sacrilegious to go to a carnival or ball game and pass on the Summer treats. Cotton candy, candy apples, funnel cake, corn dogs, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, soft pretzels, curly fries - I just gained a pound thinking about all that. Make a rule to enjoy one treat per outing.
Outdoor seating at restaurants call to you. Eating outside on an adorable patio with the Summer breeze and twinkling candles is fun and romantic, but if you're eating out more, you're most likely also consuming more calories.
