Although doing dishes isn't one of my top kitchen pet peeves, hand-washing dishes with an old sponge is. The thought of spreading bacteria and grime, rather than actually cleaning an utensil or plate, makes my skin crawl more than a full moon on Halloween. Although most people simply replace their dish sponge when it starts smelling, I swap mine out much more frequently than that — probably every two to three weeks.

Last weekend, my best friend helped me make dinner at my house. While she was up for helping me with odds and ends in the kitchen, I knew there was one task she wouldn't consider: doing the dishes. She loathes doing the dishes so much that she has been known to stock up on paper plates and plastic silverware.

With the final three contestants left on Hell's Kitchen, last night's episode was by far the most emotional. The chefs proved themselves worthy with a stellar dinner service and seamless teamwork. The tables were turned as Ramsay challenged Bonnie, Jen, and Rock to run the pass (translation: shouting out the orders as they come in, one risotto, two wellingtons, etc).

Love her or hate her — and I have a feeling I know where most of you stand on this one — Lisa Fernandes is a passionate chef. During the spring and summer, my mom and I like to go over to my grandfather Al's house to tan and swim in his pool. He lives in the East Bay and often times it is 10-15°F warmer at his house than it is at ours. When we head over to Al's house, we stop at the store for the fixings for a lovely dinner.

You may know the James Beard Awards, and you might also know the Food Network Awards, but have you heard of the Golden Clog Awards?
Food author Michael Ruhlman — you may remember him from The Next Iron Chef — and bad boy Anthony Bourdain have put their heads together and have created the Golden Clog Awards. They said it's born out of "too many beers and late night yakatori," and I think it's just downright fun.

I totally believe in rewarding oneself and that's why I am treating myself (for all of my hard work here at YumSugar) to a new blender. During summer I'm all about blitzing up fresh and exotic cocktails, with new and interesting ingredients. A new blender that can expertly and efficiently crush ice and smoothly mix a piña colada is very important to me.
