Go on a Quest to Discover the New Doritos Flavor

Doritos recently announced a new flavor called The Quest, which is sold in a black package with the words "Guessing the Flavor Is Just the Beginning . . ." in bright green letters. As someone who's always up for a challenge, I decided to play the game. The chips look more like Cool Ranch Doritos than Nacho Cheese - and by that I mean they're not neon orange. In fact, they're more like yellow Fritos corn chips, but with a slightly green hue. The flavor was a bit of a mystery to me; they've definitely got more than a hint of lime and are slightly sweet. Our initial guess was Mango Chile Lime. However when I went to the website, I discovered it was incorrect.

The Doritos Quest website appears to be one long game. Sort of a fun marketing strategy if you think about it: Give customers an interesting new flavor and have them guess it. Once they guess it, they'll start down a larger quest that could win them $100,000. Pretty gimmicky, but you can't blame them for trying something new, can you?

What you can blame them for is creating a ridiculous chip flavor. Once you find out what it is, you'll probably end up liking them less. They're worth trying once, just for the novelty of it, but I won't be adding them to my roster.

If you've had them and absolutely can't figure it out - or if you're just curious and have to know - then I'll ruin the surprise when you read more.

On April 23, 1985, the folks at Coca-Cola announced that they were switching their original recipe to a new and improved recipe. The resulting "New Coke" was a total flop, and production on Classic Coke began again after less than three months.

Pepsi Ice Cucumber

Japan gets all the interesting limited edition flavors. This time it's a limited edition Ice Cucumber flavored Pepsi. Yep, cucumber. I'm wondering if it will actually taste like Pepsi, maybe something along the lines of clear Pepsi, only fresher? The limited edition flavor will be released in Japan on June 12th. It's unclear how long it will stick around, but if it's a hit I imagine it will be on the shelves for a while.

Ben & Jerry's Renames Flavor in Honor of Gay Marriage

Beginning today, a Vermont law recognizing gay marriage goes into effect - and, to celebrate, ice cream company Ben & Jerry's is renaming popular seller "Chubby Hubby." The new name? "Hubby Hubby."

While Ben & Jerry's isn't changing the labels on "Chubby Hubby" pints sold in stores - revising product labels takes 18 months - a wedding-themed truck will hand out free "Hubby Hubby" ice cream across the state today, including at the Vermont capitol. The creamery's six in-state ice cream parlors will also sell limited-edition "Hubby Hubby" sundaes during the month of September.

Still, the company, which has been known to rename its ice cream flavors after liberal causes, hasn't ruled out the idea of retailing "Hubby Hubby" in the future. “The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love - and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO explained.

Taste Test: Coconut M&Ms

After reading the comments on a recent M&M's quiz, I decided it was high time that I sample the new limited-edition Coconut M&M's from Mars.

Once a beloved snack of mine, I was around the candies so much in a former life that I ate myself sick of them. But these could be a different story. "Coconut M&M's? That's crazy!" a coworker said in passing. Indeed, it was. Upon glancing at the package, which featured the sultry Green M&M basking in the sun with a flower behind her ear, I immediately envisioned candy-covered morsels filled with flaky, sweet coconut, Mounds style. The Battle of The Pink Candy

As we all know, limited edition candy is all the rage these days. For a while everything came with a coating of dark chocolate or a layer of creamy peanut butter. However right now, the trend seems to be the addition of fruit flavors and pink hues.

This weekend I had the opportunity to try both the limited edition Razzberry M&Ms that I told you about a few weeks ago, as well as the new-ish Strawberry Milkshake flavored Whoppers. The limited edition M&Ms were definitely the preferred option, but to check out what I thought of each, read more

The packaging on the Razzberry M&Ms is a fun, well downright girly, purple with pink accents, and upon opening it there is definitely a slight artificial raspberry smell. Each M&M is magenta colored and initially I thought the flavor was in the candy shell, but after eating several I realized it was actually in the chocolate. Despite how clichéd the raspberry/chocolate combination is, it was actually quite tasty. I honestly enjoyed eating them and hope they introduce a dark chocolate flavor.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Strawberry Whoppers. Whoppers are generally chocolate covered malt balls, but this edition contains no chocolate. Instead they're malt balls wrapped in a strawberry-flavored white chocolate-ish coating. In theory it's a great idea, but in execution it fails due to the fact that the strawberry coating is ridiculously waxy. After eating a handful my teeth felt laminated and weird. Apparently at Easter they sell a version with a candy shell and I'm pretty positive it might be just what it needs to save it.

So verdict? Hunt down the M&Ms (they're only available for six weeks) and ignore the Strawberry Whoppers until Easter. Oh and stay tuned, I'm sure these won't be the the only limited edition fruit flavored candies.

Guinness Unveils New 250th Anniversary Stout Beer

Stout lovers get excited: for the first time since it began exporting to the US, Guinness is introducing a new stout beer to select markets.

On April 24, to celebrate its quarter-of-a-century draught legacy, Guinness is launching a limited-edition beer, 250th Anniversary Stout, which will be available in bars and stores in the US, Australia, and Singapore. The anniversary brew honors Arthur Guinness's signing of a 9,000-year lease in 1759 at St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin, where the company's flagship brewery is located.

Less creamy than its original counterpart, the special-release brew will have a heavy malt flavor and more effervescence, along with a slightly higher alcohol content. Instead of nitrogen and carbon dioxide (used in original Guinness draught), the new stout will use carbonation, as well as two types of malt, and triple hops. The resulting beer is intended to have a more refreshing taste and a simpler pouring process.

Unlike Guinness's famous two-part pouring process (which involves filling the glass 75 percent of the way at an angle, letting the surge of foam settle, and then topping it off with the rest), the anniversary stout can be poured at once.

Since I love a bold, zippy beer, this stout sounds like something I can get behind - possibly even more so than traditional Guinness. When April 24 arrives, stock up while you can, since the commemorative brew is only slated to be around for six months. Do you have plans to seek out the special-release stout?
