Happy Hour: Long Island Iced Tea

After finding this recipe for a Long Irish Iced Tea a few weeks ago, I had the hankering for the strong, original cocktail that has inspired so many variations. These highballs are great for Summer sippin', but don't let the name fool you: Long Island Iced Tea isn't actually made with tea. It was most likely named because of its resemblance to tea and lemony flavor.

This dangerous drink is a combination of vodka, rum, triple sec, gin, and tequila, so it's handy if you're moving and need to empty the liquor cabinet. The combination of booze, plus sweet and sour mix and a splash of cola, goes down surprisingly easily. To get the recipe, read more.

Long Island Iced Tea
Drinks Mixer

Ingredients

1 part vodka
1 part tequila
1 part rum
1 part gin
1 part triple sec
1 1/2 parts sweet and sour mix
1 splash Coca-Cola

Directions
Mix ingredients together over ice in a glass. Pour into a shaker and give one brisk shake. Pour back into the glass and make sure there is a touch of fizz at the top. Garnish with lemon.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Come Party With Me: Super Bowl - Drinks

Beer and football go together like peanut butter and jelly. You must have beer at your Super Bowl party. If you are playing a football-related drinking game - everyone choose a player, each time that player comes into contact with the ball you drink, if he fumbles or scores you chug! - stock up on a bunch of bottles and ice to keep them cold.

Have water and sodas on hand for those who choose not to partake in the drinking festivities.

Long Island Iced Tea
From Taste

1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
3 cups ice cubes
1/3 cup chilled vodka
1/3 cup tequila
1/3 cup white rum
1/3 cup gin
1/4 cup Cointreau liqueur
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 cup chilled cola

Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high and bring to the boil. Cook, without stirring, for 3 minutes or until syrup thickens. Remove from heat and set aside for 15 minutes to cool.
Divide the ice evenly among serving glasses.
Pour over the vodka, tequila, rum, gin, Cointreau, sugar syrup, lemon juice and cola. Serve immediately.

Boston Punch
From Virtual Cities

2 cups apple cider
1 cup brandy
1/2 cup dark rum
1/2 cup curacao
Juice of 2 lemons
One 750-ml bottle of champagne
1 liter seltzer or club soda
1 teaspoon sugar

Chill cider, brandy, rum, curacao, lemon juice, champagne, and seltzer or club soda.
Combine cider, brandy, rum, curacao, and lemon juice with sugar, stirring until sugar dissolves.
Just before serving, pour over a block of ice in a punch bowl and stir in champagne and seltzer.

Serves 6-8.

Happy Hour: Long Irish Iced Tea

When I'm not craving mojitos or other hard and fruity cocktails, I find that warm weather makes me thirst for spiked drinks inspired by iced tea. In my college days, I occasionally threw back a Long Island Iced Tea, and though the drink gets a bad rap for being so darn strong, it's also deliciously refreshing.

If you're longing (har har) for a more sophisticated take on the Long Island, I recently discovered a variation called the Long Irish Iced Tea, which uses citrus vodka, a honey-flavored Irish whiskey, and a cognac liqueur called Celtic Crossing. To get the recipe, read more.

Long Irish Iced Tea
Modified From the Arizona Republic

Ingredients

1 ounce citrus vodka
1 ounce Celtic Crossing liqueur
1 ounce Gosling's Gold Rum
2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice
2 tablespoons simple syrup
Splash of cola
Lime wedge, for garnish

Directions
Pour all but the last 2 ingredients into a tall, ice-filled glass. Add a splash of cola and garnish with lime.

Makes 1 drink.

Happy Hour: Spiked Arnold Palmer

A little while back I talked about a delicious non-alcoholic drink that combines equal parts lemonade and iced tea for a refreshing cocktail called an Arnold Palmer (it's named after a golfer). Well my sister is a huge fan of this drink and this weekend when we were out on the town (the town being New York City of course) we tasted a wonderfully blended spiked Arnold Palmer. It was your standard combination of lemonade and iced tea only diluted with vodka and flavored with muddled mint. It was fabulous somewhere between a mojito and a long island iced tea. Spiked Arnold Palmer
Inspired by a cocktail from Lure bar

1 cup packed mint leaves, chopped
2/3-cup sugar
1-cup fresh lemon juice
1 cup freshly brewed tea, chilled
1 1/2 cups vodka
Crushed ice for serving
Fresh mint springs, optional for garnish

Combine chopped mint and sugar in a large bowl or pitcher.
Stir in lemon juice, iced tea, and vodka.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours.
Fill six 6-8 ounce festive glasses with crushed ice. Pour mixture over. Garnish with mint and lemon springs.

Serves 8.

Come Party With Me: Super Bowl - The Look

Instead of decorating in red, blue, and white - which are the team colors for the Patriots and the Giants - at your Super Bowl party, use green and brown to evoke the colors of the field and ball. But, before you begin to decorate, make sure the TV is in a central location with plenty of comfortable seating. Next turn to the table and set up a food buffet.

Cover the table with a green Astroturf tablecloth and place a brown suede runner down the middle. Sprinkle shiny football confetti all over the suede runner. A versatile pilsner glass can be used for beer, soda, long island iced tea, or Boston punch.

Serve the nachos in individual red and white paper trays and stack brown plastic plates nearby for sandwiches and empanadas. Don't forget festive football napkins.

Give beer drinkers a football insulator so their hands don't get cold. A football clapper makes a fun favor, especially if given at the start of a party.
