How Do You Store Your Magazines?

My friend Blair is an interior designer, and every time I visit her house, I discover another corner that she's styled to ultimate perfection. Most recently, it was her shelter magazines, coiled up beautifully in a vintage milk crate. I've never seen glossies stored this way, and I kind of love it, but I don't know how good it is for the issues.

What Al-Qaeda's Women's Magazine Talks About

Dubbed the Jihad Cosmo, the marketers behind al-Qaeda's new women's glossy Al-Shamikha (the majestic woman) have clearly never read the sex-bible-in-list-form rag.

With a cover that looks more like a jihad textbook (albeit for girls) than a Western glossy, Al-Shamikha puts new spins on standard ladymag topics, like how to find and keep a mujahideen, get a flawless complexion (keep your face covered), and find happiness for good (martyrdom).

As it is an extension of al-Qaeda, the magazine does not even try to hide its true editorial mission: educate and involve women in the war against the enemies of Islam. It comes less than a year after the launch of Inspire, an al-Qaeda magazine for English speakers living in the Western world, which features articles like "What to Expect in Jihad" and "Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom."

So while the whole idea that al-Qaeda is blurring the lines between holy war and relationship advice is disturbing, I will not call it the Jihad Cosmo until I see an article like "10 Ways to Bring Jihad to Bed."

Cool Idea: Hallelujah by Wonderable

One of my absolute favorite products that I discovered at the Ambiente design trade show, which I attended courtesy of Messe Frankfurt last month, was the Hallelujah Lamp from Netherlands-based designer Wonderable. But I don't just love it because it looks cool - and it does, doesn't it? First and foremost, the pendants are made from a Vietnamese printer's wastepaper, so it's not only inventive, but it's also eco-friendly.Secondly, a team of young artisans, mostly street children, create them in Ho Chi Minh City using the same technique used to create classic Vietnamese garlands. So while the production offers the young people a chance to learn a trade and earn a living from it, it also helps to pass down the techniques of their own culture's traditional crafts.

And lastly, since the lamp is produced from excess paper from a printer, each lamp is unique. The shades not only bear a limitless range of colors, but each has a distinct pattern based on the printed paper used to make it. I liked the stripe-like pattern of this one! Conceivably, the honeycomb-like structure could be produced in solid colors - but where's the fun in that?

Hallelujah is available in stores all over the map, from South Korea to Switzerland and beyond. Unfortunately, it hasn't made its way to the States yet, but you can order yours directly from Wonderable for about $380.

Jamie Bissonnette Wins Food & Wine People's Best New Chef Award

Food & Wine magazine's quest for the People's Best New Chef is over, and a winner has been declared: Jamie Bissonnette of Coppa in Boston, MA, has won the popular vote.

"It's fantastic that Jamie, who champions offal and serves calf's brain ravioli and blood sausage pepperoni pizza, has such a huge following," Food & Wine editor in chief Dana Cowin said in a statement.

The other finalists from each region included the following:

Food & Wine Is Looking For the People's Best New Chef

One of the most coveted awards a young chef can receive is the title of Food & Wine's Best New Chef. Every April, the Food & Wine staff selects 10 chefs to be honored in the magazine and at a gala at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. This year, for the first time ever, the glossy has added a people's choice element to Best New Chefs.

It's partnered with CNN's food blog, Eatocracy, to launch a competition called The People's Best New Chef. The voting will take place online, and the winner will be featured alongside the magazine's picks for Best New Chef. Voting starts tomorrow with 10 chefs from 10 different regions and will run through March 1.

The chef with the most votes from each region will be named a finalist; the finalist with the most overall votes will be named 2011 People's Best New Chef. I'm curious to see who from the San Francisco Bay Area will be nominated and interested in the results of the competition. Will you vote for your favorite chefs?

Bon Appétit Launches New "Bite Me" Campaign

Last year, Bon Appétit magazine got a new home and a new editor in chief. Now it's got an irreverent new advertising campaign titled Bite Me. Set to launch next Monday, the promotion includes four city-specific websites in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles. "With this campaign, we are having fun with a play on words, inviting the advertiser and consumer to take a bite out of Bon Appétit," said William Wackermann, the executive vice president, in a press release. "If they haven't tasted it lately, they will be in for a wonderful surprise, thus conveying a new energy and enthusiasm at Bon Appétit under the new Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport." With Bite Me's images of a tattooed arm and lipstick-stained mirror, I'm curious to see where this new direction goes.

A Digital Magazine Storefront Could Be on the Way

No matter how you feel about magazines on the iPad, the device does have the ability to turn print pages into interactive experiences. And while I'm a magazine fan in the traditional sense, magazines translated to the iPad are growing on me. According to publishers, though, sales of digital magazine editions aren't as high as they'd like, and the answer could be a magazine storefront for tablet devices.
