Coca-Cola Brings Vault Drink Head to Head With Mtn Dew

Beverage titan Coca-Cola, eager to improve flat sales of carbonated beverage Vault, is hoping to win over consumers with a campaign that employs a tried-and-true tactic: free drinks.

Although Pepsi-owned (and recently renamed) Mtn Dew carries as much as 80 percent of the market share for citrus soda, Coca-Cola's three-year-old citrus cooler Vault, with four percent of the market share, has fizzled with customers. Hoping to turn the tides for Vault, Coca-Cola will soon begin its "Don't Dew It" campaign.

In an attempt to convert Mtn Dew die-hards into Vault fanatics, the company will be giving away coupons for free 16-ounce, 20-ounce, or 24-ounce Vault drinks when customers purchase a 20-ounce Mtn Dew.

During the economic downturn, consumer coupon use has skyrocketed. Like other recent promotions, industry experts anticipate that the "Vault Taste Challenge," will see a huge participation rate from consumers. Of course, for Coca-Cola, it will come at a price - that of at least a couple million dollars.

Although I think this campaign will be successful, I'm skeptical of Coca-Cola snagging a significant portion of Mtn Dew's market share. I used to be a huge Mtn Dew fan, and Surge, Mellow Yellow, and the others just didn't do it for me. Do you think it will prove to be lucrative?

Source

Reader Recipe: Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings

I was checking out the recipes in the Kitchen Goddess group, when I saw this one from TeamSugar member ashleyk4214. Her recipe is for a simple dessert, but unique dessert. Not any old apple dumplings, these ones are made with Mountain Dew! That's right, the golden pastries are cooked in a mixture of Mountain Dew, cinnamon, butter and sugar. If this sounds intriguing to you, get the recipe, just read more.

Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings
From TeamSugar member ashleyk4214

I got this recipe in my email this afternoon and I KNEW I had to make it just as soon as I had the chance, it sounded so good! Well, the chance just so happen came up tonight when my sister invited me over for dinner (I think she is feeling sorry for me since the husband is still out of town). Anyway, here's the basics:
2 cans crescent rolls. I used Pillsbury 8 count cans in original flava.
2 apples. I used green apples, I believe they were Granny Smith.
2 sticks butter. I don't skimp, the recipe says you can use margarine, but what's the point anyway?
2 cups sugar.
2 tsp. cinnamon.
1 can Mountain Dew.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Core and slice apples (I removed the skins as well).
Wrap each in a crescent triangle. I basically just tried my best to get every inch of the apple covered by the dough.
Line up in a 9x13 inch pan.
Melt butter, cinnamon, and sugar together. I just nuked the butter and then stirred in the sugar and cinnamon until it had a pretty smooth, pourable consistency.
Pour the Dew around the perimeter of the pan.
Bake 45 minutes.
Eat warm with a scoop, or 3, of vanilla ice cream.

The apple slices wrapped in the crescent dough.

2 cups o' sugar

Butter, sugar, and cinnamon

Do the Dew!

Before the oven

After the oven.

Go on a Quest to Discover the New Doritos Flavor

Doritos recently announced a new flavor called The Quest, which is sold in a black package with the words "Guessing the Flavor Is Just the Beginning . . ." in bright green letters. As someone who's always up for a challenge, I decided to play the game. The chips look more like Cool Ranch Doritos than Nacho Cheese - and by that I mean they're not neon orange. In fact, they're more like yellow Fritos corn chips, but with a slightly green hue. The flavor was a bit of a mystery to me; they've definitely got more than a hint of lime and are slightly sweet. Our initial guess was Mango Chile Lime. However when I went to the website, I discovered it was incorrect.

The Doritos Quest website appears to be one long game. Sort of a fun marketing strategy if you think about it: Give customers an interesting new flavor and have them guess it. Once they guess it, they'll start down a larger quest that could win them $100,000. Pretty gimmicky, but you can't blame them for trying something new, can you?

What you can blame them for is creating a ridiculous chip flavor. Once you find out what it is, you'll probably end up liking them less. They're worth trying once, just for the novelty of it, but I won't be adding them to my roster.

If you've had them and absolutely can't figure it out - or if you're just curious and have to know - then I'll ruin the surprise when you read more.

You ready for this one? The new flavor is Mountain Dew.

That's right. Mountain Dew-flavored Doritos, and they can be yours for 99 cents a bag.

So tell me, have you tried them? What do you think?
