Would You Eat These Soda-Flavored Doughnuts?

Last time I went to the store, I spotted these doughnuts in flavors such as Hawaiian Punch, Orange Crush, and Dr Pepper. At first, I was curious and somewhat puzzled: Why would anyone think to pair soda flavors with doughnuts?

Ultimately I'm not sure what to think of this concept; I'm inclined to believe that food and beverage companies are running out of novelty ideas. Have you ever come across these doughnuts?

Pizza Hut's "Double Roll" Is Blowing My Mind

Wow. Really that's all you need to say about Pizza Hut's "Double Roll" pizza - hot dog stuffed crust pizza with corn, mini- hamburger patties and a whole lot more. I really don't have much else to say except for that a medium costs ¥2500 ($20.50) and a large will set you back ¥3550 ($29). Oh and like most amazing things, it's only available in Japan. If anyone can translate the ad, please let us know what it says in the comments.

Update: The fine folks at Slice NY have pointed out that the ad has the date Sept 9, 2007 in it. Does this mean it's a limited edition pizza? Oh and what's stuffed into the right-hand side and why does it have a maple leaf instead of a tomato? Is it a sweet maple syrup sauce?!

Do You Think Food Tastes Better When It's on a Stick?

After discovering my new favorite outdoor dinner fare, pork and mango skewers, and falling in love with Party's killer prosciutto, melon, and mozzarella brochettes, the two of us came to a consensus: certain foods simply taste better when they're served on a stick. Like nibbling on anything mini, there's something about the novelty of eating surf and turf, caprese salad, or pizza on a skewer that never seems to get old. I like to hope that the kebab trend will always stick around. What do you think? Does food taste better when it's on a stick?

Would You Drink This TruBlood Beverage?

True Blood fans: If you've ever wanted to know what a TruBlood, well, truly tastes like, you're in luck. At last weekend's Comic-Con, the producers of the show announced the launch of an official beverage, made from - what else? - the juice of blood oranges.

In the HBO series, vampires are accepted into society and coexist with humans - but rather than drink human blood, they imbibe a synthetic supplement, TruBlood. And while Tom Colicchio recently concocted a bloody good substitute, thirsty viewers can now pre-order the real McCoy.

I celebrated the season premiere with festive food of my own, so I can't wait to try the drink just for the novelty of it - although I won't likely be stocking my shelves with it. Would you buy this drink?

Flavor Your Own Chips With Kettle's Create-a-Chip Kit

My whole life, I've been a sucker for trying the every possible packaged food novelty, from bacon-flavored mayonnaise to ice cream cupcakes. However, my favorite kind of food promotion is - hands down - the interactive kind. For example, some time ago, Kettle sent Party and I an assortment of new chips, and asked us to vote on the brand's next flavor. This year, the chipmakers took it to the next level with an even more hands-on promotion. For their Create-a-Chip Challenge, Kettle sent a kit with seven seasoning packets, four bags of unseasoned chips, three Kettle flavors for inspiration, and a card with recipe suggestions. We giddily toyed around with the seasoning blends, which included sweet chili, vinegar, sour cream and chive, lemon butter, caramelized onion, cheddar, and roasted tomato. Our first combination, curry ketchup, was a mix of roasted tomato, vinegar, sweet chili, and some garam masala we had lying around. We felt it was pleasantly distinctive, but we liked our second idea even better: fully loaded baked potato, made with sour cream and chives, lemon butter, and cheddar.

Both Party and I agreed Kettle's Create-a-Chip Kit ($14.99 or $24.99 for two) was one of the best work diversions ever. We've even uploaded our recipes to the company's online recipe gallery, and we've reserved two unflavored bags of chips to come up with even better flavors. What should we make with them? Growing Trend of Child Foodies Faces Backlash

Last week, Rocco DiSpirito declared he was sick of foie gras. Then we made a list of things we're over. Here's another tired food trend to add to the queue: kid foodies. Lately, the little ones have been making a lot of noise in the kitchen. First, there was Greg Grossman, a 13-year-old who was the hottest rising caterer on the Hamptons circuit. Then the New York Times told the world about David Fishman, a 12-year-old aspiring food critic, and Paramount promptly purchased the rights to turn his story into a movie. Last, but certainly not least, was Julian Kreusser, a 5-year-old from Portland with a recurring cooking show.

What to make of this growing trend? While those with a fondness for a child's precociousness may be bowled over, the rest of us are left feeling slightly perturbed. In response, at least one journalist has voiced her issue with it.

In a Slate article, food writer Regina Schrambling argues that letting children into the kitchen at such a young age is both dangerous and premature. Childrens' taste buds differ from adult palates and they have a smaller frame of reference for food, making it hard to tell the difference between a good burger and a bad burger. Schrambling writes:

On a larger scale, the trend emphasizes the worst of the food frenzy today: The celebration of celebrity and novelty over authenticity and seriousness.

Maybe it's because I didn't hone my culinary skills until I was an adult, but I have to side with Schrambling. Kids should be kids - childhood, in all its joys, is short enough. Do you agree - are you equally sick of hearing about tots flipping omelets in the kitchen?
