A few months ago, I was supposed to grab dinner with my brother in LA. Unfortunately he had to work late, so a sit-down dinner was out of the question. However that was okay with me, this meant I finally had an excuse to go to Pink's, the famous LA hot dog institution. We got there around 11p.m. and there was definitely a crowd. Happy Hour: Pink Torpedoes

Inspired by a cocktail class I recently attended, I decided to make my own strawberry-infused vodka. The technique is simple: all you have to do is slice a bunch of strawberries and combine them with the vodka and a little sugar. Then you let it sit for a couple of days until the vodka has a vibrant pink color. Unlike store-bought-infused vodkas, this homemade variation has a sweet-tart berry flavor that's neither syrupy or cloying. Once the vodka is ready, you can sip it solo or make a pink torpedo like I did.

This fizzy-girlie drink combines the vodka with limoncello and sparkling wine. If you don't have sparkling wine, you can substitute sparkling water. It's a fabulously refreshing concoction perfect for enjoying on a warm afternoon. To look at the recipe, read more.

Pink Torpedoes
Modified from Everyday With Rachael Ray

Ingredients

2 cups vodka, chilled
1 1/2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
Limoncello
One 750-ml bottle sparkling wine or sparkling water, chilled

Directions

In a large bowl, stir together the vodka, two-thirds of the sliced strawberries and the granulated sugar. Cover with plastic wrap and let stand at room temperature until the vodka turns pink, about 6 hours. Refrigerate overnight or up to 3 days.
Fill 6 glasses with ice. Strain the vodka and divide among 6 tall glasses.
Add a splash of limoncello to each glass and top off with the sparkling wine or sparkling water. Garnish with the remaining strawberry slices.

Makes 6 drinks.

Pink is my favorite color. Call me crazy, but if I had to marry a color it would be pink. Inspired by the pink decor over on CasaSugar and since it's Breast Cancer Awareness month, I thought it would be a great time to pack my kitchen with pink! Lots of companies are selling pink kitchen tools or pink linens with proceeds that go towards the cure. I love the idea of getting pink kitchen supplies while doing something good for the world. Do You Purchase Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Products?

The stores are currently loaded with pink products benefiting breast cancer research. For example, KitchenAid carries a huge line of pink products that generate funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. What I want to know is, do you purchase these pink products?

A few years ago, London's Octave Restaurant and Jazz Bar came up with a fancy new drink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The drink, aptly called The Pink Ribbon, is a blend of pomegranate and rose petal vodka; 50p ($1) of each cocktail went to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Pink Ribbon
Inspired by a drink from Octave Restaurant and Jazz Bar

Sparkling rosé wine or sparkling water, to top off the glass
2 oz pomegranate juice
1 oz rose petal vodka
fresh rose petals

Add pomegranate juice and vodka to a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Shake and strain into chilled champagne flute. Top off with sparkling water or sparkling rosé wine. Garnish with fresh rose petals.

Pink Purse Cake: Love It or Hate It?

Look out fashionistas! Now you can have your fancy handbag and eat it too! This bag is described as a "must have" for the fashion forward. Draped in pink fondant, this pink purse cake is a layered Tahitian vanilla bean cake with chocolate fudge and white buttercream. It's not really my style (although it sounds delicious), but I think I can name a person or two who is going to go gaga over it. What do you guys think, is this pink purse cake a must have? Oh and did I mention, it weighs 1 lb 9 oz and costs $150?

Happy Hour: Pink Port

British retail giant Marks & Spencer has just launched a pink port intended to appeal to women. The wine, which is unimaginatively called Pink Port, is lighter in hue than regular port because it takes a small amount of color from the grape skins. They've decided to test this product out because many folks associate port as a man's drink - much like they wrongly assume whiskey and bourbon are for men only.

I'll admit, I'm drawn to things by their packaging, so I'm sure this would have grabbed my interest. However, unfortunately, according to Guy Woodward, editor of Decanter magazine, the wine's not worth it. He believes it was more like vodka cranberry than port and said:

I suspect they're trying to jump on the rosé bandwagon, but it tastes worryingly close to the alcopop market.

It's a bummer to hear that port marketed towards women is inferior to regular port. Do they think we won't notice if it's bad? What do you guys think? Do you think we even need our own port?

Fill Your Bagel Craving With a Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel

If you're looking for another way to justify your breakfast bagel, Panera Bread - sort of like Starbucks, but with baked goods - has just released a bagel in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The bagel, which is shaped like a ribbon and called the Pink Ribbon, is made with cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar. A proceed of each Pink Ribbon bagel sale will benefit various breast cancer charities, including the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. This is the seventh year Panera has done this promotion, last year they raised almost $200,000 from sales and donations.

The Battle of The Pink Candy

As we all know, limited edition candy is all the rage these days. For a while everything came with a coating of dark chocolate or a layer of creamy peanut butter. However right now, the trend seems to be the addition of fruit flavors and pink hues.

This weekend I had the opportunity to try both the limited edition Razzberry M&Ms that I told you about a few weeks ago, as well as the new-ish Strawberry Milkshake flavored Whoppers. The limited edition M&Ms were definitely the preferred option, but to check out what I thought of each, read more

The packaging on the Razzberry M&Ms is a fun, well downright girly, purple with pink accents, and upon opening it there is definitely a slight artificial raspberry smell. Each M&M is magenta colored and initially I thought the flavor was in the candy shell, but after eating several I realized it was actually in the chocolate. Despite how clichéd the raspberry/chocolate combination is, it was actually quite tasty. I honestly enjoyed eating them and hope they introduce a dark chocolate flavor.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the Strawberry Whoppers. Whoppers are generally chocolate covered malt balls, but this edition contains no chocolate. Instead they're malt balls wrapped in a strawberry-flavored white chocolate-ish coating. In theory it's a great idea, but in execution it fails due to the fact that the strawberry coating is ridiculously waxy. After eating a handful my teeth felt laminated and weird. Apparently at Easter they sell a version with a candy shell and I'm pretty positive it might be just what it needs to save it.

So verdict? Hunt down the M&Ms (they're only available for six weeks) and ignore the Strawberry Whoppers until Easter. Oh and stay tuned, I'm sure these won't be the the only limited edition fruit flavored candies.

Happy Hour: Pink Lemonade Margarita

So yesterday Yum shared a recipe for a non-alcoholic pink lemonade stating that When the heat gets up there (and I know, some people enjoy this weather, but not me) I really need something that can quench my thirst. The some people she is talking about here is me! I love this weather and nothing beats sipping a cold margarita on a hot day - close your eyes and you can be instantly transported to Mexico. Luckily reader, fairy_MK recently shared her recipe for a pink lemonade margarita over in the Let's Have A Drink group on TeamSugar. I made these last year during the summer. They were such a hit, even the normal beer drinking 'macho men' liked them.

Pink Lemonade Margarita - 5 servings 1 cup each
Original recipe from Kraft Foods.

Ingredients:
1 tub CRYSTAL LIGHT Pink Lemonade Flavor Low Calorie Soft Drink Mix
1-1/2 cups cold water
1/2 cup cold orange juice
2 Tbsp. tequila
1 Tbsp. lime juice
5 cups crushed ice

PLACE drink mix, water, orange juice, tequila and lime juice in blender container; cover.

BLEND on high speed until drink mix is dissolved.

ADD ice; cover. Blend on high speed until thickened and smooth. Serve immediately.

* This can be made without the tequila for those who enjoy their drinks without spirits.
