When I was growing up, we had a special Christmas plate that was reserved for serving Santa Claus. Every Christmas Eve, my sister and I would take the pretty plate, place the most perfect cookies on it, and set it out by the tree. To relive old memories, I went looking for the long lost plate. Alas, it was nowhere to be found. I asked you to help me find a replacement by heading off to market in search of a beautiful Christmas plate worthy of Saint Nick. Do You Mix Your Food On Your Plate?

The other day FabSugar's mom made lunch for us. It was a delicious rice, chicken kebab, and vegetable medley. I chopped up the chicken, poured the veggies over the rice and mixed it all together. When I glanced over at geeksugar's plate I noticed she had three separated little piles: rice, chicken, and vegetables. This got me wondering, do you mix your food on your plate?

Top Chef Producers to Create NBC Restaurateur Show

From Magical Elves, the producers of Bravo's Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, and the soon-to-air Top Chef: Just Desserts, comes yet another reality TV show, tentatively titled United Plates of America.

Unlike its sister productions, United Plates will air on NBC. The premise: aspiring restaurateurs compete in a number of challenges involving the restaurant's concept, cuisine, management, and marketability. The judges' panel will include wealthy investors in the culinary and business world.The prize is being called "among the biggest in reality show history" - the winner will receive a restaurant chain that opens in four locations across the US - funded by the investors themselves. "It's a culinary competition that anybody can take part in," said executive producer Dan Cutforth. "All you need is a great idea for a restaurant."

Finally, a different foodie reality TV concept. This show could be wildly captivating and educational, because the average American viewer doesn't have an inkling of knowledge about the operations behind a restaurant. I would definitely tune in to check out the show. What about you?

Handful of Plates: Love It or Hate It?

These taco shell style plates were designed by Dutch-born designer Alissia Melka-Teichroew. The Handful of Plates are sold in a set of three for $110 and are curved in order for you to keep the plate in one hand, while eating the food with the other. I think they're ideal for parties, but wonder if they would be awkward to hold, especially if you had smaller hands. What do you guys think, do you like them?

The weather has recently warmed up and I've moved all of my casual dining outside. When eating outdoors on an everyday basis, an easy-to-clean outdoor tablecloth is a must and so are fun, plastic plates. Five Tips For Pretty Food Plating

Anyone who's ever watched Top Chef, flipped through a food magazine, or eaten at a fancy restaurant understands the importance of plating food. First impressions are important, and the way your meal is presented can determine whether it's considered mere grub or totally gourmet. But you don't have to be a pro to create a pretty plate. Here are five simple tips to making restaurant-worthy plates at home.

Use large plates. Crowded food looks messy, so give your dishes room to breath. Negative space on a plate looks elegant, and leaving room between each item gives the individual components more oomph.
Opt for neutral china. White, bone, and other neutral plates will complement pretty much any color of food, while busier patterns can sometimes clash.

Make pretty piles. If you don't want to separate the individual components, try stacking them in a tidy tower.
Create a clock. If you're serving a protein, starch, and veggies, arrange the three items according to the face of a clock, with starch at 10, meat around 2, and veggies below 9 and 3. Make sure one of the items acts as a focal point on the plate.
Keep it clean. When working with wet ingredients, try to keep the plate as clear and smudge-free as possible. If you drizzle sauces, control the distribution so that it's artful, not icky.
