Happy Hour: Mistletoe Mojito

A great way to officially kick off the holiday season is to mix up a festive drink! How luscious is this Christmas cocktail? It features the flavors of a classic mojito - rum and mint - but contains a twist. Instead of being topped with soda water, Pomegranate 7UP is floated on top. The boring lime garnish is jazzed up with jewel-like pomegranate seeds. The final drink is visually stunning and dangerously delicious. To shake one up today, read more
Happy Hour: Pomegranate Mojito

It seems that pomegranate martinis are everywhere these days. A while back, when he was obsessed with making them, my friend Gabe taught me his recipe. However I'm kinda martini-ed out and even though it's the middle of winter, I feel like something refreshing and light. So I'm taking a classic mojito recipe and giving it a twist by adding a new flavor, pomegranate juice. To make a pomegranate mojito tonight, read more

Pomegranate Mojito
From Extra Tasty

1.5 parts Light rum
1 part Lime juice
1 part Soda water
1 part Pomegranate Juice
A splash of Simple syrup
4 mint leaves, plus more for garnish

In the bottom of a double old-fashioned glass bruise the 4 mint leaves with the fresh lime juice and simple syrup.

Add crushed ice then the pomegranate juice and rum.

Top with a splash of soda and stir. Garnish with the mint sprig.

Happy Hour: Modmix Organic Cocktail Mixers

Move over Stirrings, there's a new cocktail mixer on the market and it's made with 100 percent organic fruit juice. Meet Modmix ($9.99), the mixer for the luxury spirit. I was lucky enough to speak with one of the founders, Tricia McCracken, at the Fancy Foods Show. She explained that the mixers pair well with all types of liquor, including bubbly. For a non-alcoholic drink, she suggests diluting the mixer with sparkling water. Modmix comes in six flavors: citrus margarita, French martini, lavender lemon drop, mojito, pomegranate cosmopolitan, and wasabi bloody Mary. Unlike most mixers, Modmix is neither too artificial or too sweet - they taste surprisingly like fresh juice. I loved the French martini, a subtle blend of pineapple juice with a vibrant raspberry color, and the wasabi bloody Mary, a thick tomato juice that packs a spicy punch. The best thing about Modmix is that they have a very pure, intense, authentic fruit flavor. Have you tried Modmix? Did you think it was a step above other cocktail mixers?

Come Paw-ty With Me: Dog Birthday - Drinks

The dog party will be in the park, so serve cocktails and drinks that can be made in batches in advance. The menu is casual picnic food and a fun flavored mojito will pair perfectly. Bing cherries give a festive color and feel that are refreshing on a hot day at a park. Instead of regular lemonade, offer non-drinkers a pomegranate ginger lemonade. Stack clear plastic party cups near the drink pitchers so that guests can serve themselves. The guests of honor can't be forgotten, so be sure to have lots of fresh, cool water to hydrate your pooches. A super-sized, communal water bowl or a bunch of mini bowls with each doggie's name written on it are essential. Want to pour these drinkies at your next party? Then just read more

1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups fresh lime juice (about 9 limes)
3 pounds dark cherries, such as Bing or Burlat, pitted
2 1/4 cups best-quality black cherry or plain vodka
1 (750 ml) bottle sparkling water

Bring sugar and 1 1/4 cups water to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool completely. (Makes about 2 cups syrup.) Syrup can be refrigerated in an airtight container up to 1 month.

Put lime juice into a medium nonreactive bowl. Halve 2/3 of the cherries; add all cherries to lime juice. Stir in syrup. Refrigerate at least 1 hour (up to overnight).

Stir cherry mixture and vodka in a large serving bowl.

Fill 12 glasses with ice. Spoon 1/2 cup cherry-vodka mixture into each glass.

Top with sparkling water; serve immediately.
