In addition to being grilled cheese day, this Sunday is also National Red Licorice Day. To help us celebrate, the folks at Red Vines recently sent us a care package of various flavors. The Sugar HQ is actually full of die-hard Twizzler fans, so I decided to see what they thought of my fave Red Vines.

Today I was meeting a friend for lunch when I realized I didn't have any cash. So I popped into the nearby drugstore to use my ATM card for some cash back. When I usually do this, I end up with a pack of gum, but today something made me grab a pack of Red Vines instead.

Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers wine tasting. One of the best wines I tasted was this bottle of old vine Zin. An old vine Zinfandel comes from grapes grown on vines that were planted in California many years ago.

Isn't it funny when you learn about something new and then suddenly it's everywhere? That's exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago when I tasted this Milliaire Old Vine 2003 Carignane. Immediately I'm noticing it everywhere and I'm asking myself, how did I never notice it before?

Being a big Red Vines and Twizzlers fan, I was excited to find out that Hershey's brand Y&S Candies was debuting a new line of "grownup," bite-sized soft candy, Young & Smylie licorice ($2.99). The licorice is sold in a resealable plastic bag, which locks in the candy's moisture and keeps it soft. Another thing I enjoyed about the packaging was the "licorice lore" on the back: Did you know that the licorice plant Glycyrrhiza, belongs to the pea or bean family?

By now you must have heard that Starbucks is closing 600 of its stateside coffee shops. Last week Starbucks released the official list of the closing stores with a grand total of 616 closures. The closing stores are company-operated stand alone locations; no bookstore, super market, or airport Starbucks will be shuttered.

When I was in high school my friends and I got together every year for a party we called 'Friend Christmas'. Instead of having to purchase gifts for all of the girlies in our circle we did a Secret Santa exchange. The sleepover was a highlight of the Christmas holidays, one full of gossip and cookies.

While many winemakers are worried about the increasing levels of alcohol in wine, one winery, The Bodega Casa de la Ermita, is actually doing something to stop it. The Spanish winery has just released the world's first ever "light wine." In this case, light means less alcohol — just six and a half percent — and lower alcohol levels means fewer calories.
