By now you probably know that the winner of Top Chef Masters was chef Rick Bayless from Chicago. From watching the final episode we learned a little bit about Rick's history. For example, his parents owned a barbecue joint that served a special homemade barbecue sauce.

Well, the next round of chefs competed this week on Top Chef Masters. It was interesting to see another set of professionals, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the host, Kelly Choi. What do you think of her?

Top Chef Masters is only in week two, but there is already talk of the grand prize winner. Last week in her Yummy Letter newsletter, Grace Ann Walden, a longtime food journalist based in San Francisco, claims to announce the winner.

When it comes to Mexican cuisine, there is nothing quite as essential as guacamole. In its most basic form, the creamy dip consists of perfectly ripe mashed avocado seasoned with salt. While there are hundreds of recipes, it's nice to have a simple one to start with.

In the latest episode of Top Chef, the cheftestants found themselves cooking up a feast for a suburban Chicago block party. They went "shopping" in the pantries of the locals, and were divided up in teams to do so. Both the red and the blue didn't fare so well, and I admit, it was pretty compelling watching them make mistakes and drink beers.

I'm a huge fan of guacamole and prefer to make a fresh version rather than purchase it at the store. As often as I make guacamole, I don't know if I need an avocado masher. It's definitely a unique gadget — created by Mexican cooking guru Rick Bayless — but it seems a little nonessential, especially in my compact studio kitchen.
