Chipotle Promotes Food, Inc. Documentary

Chipotle doesn't just want to feed its customers - it wants to educate them, too. The fast-casual food chain has teamed up with Magnolia Pictures, Participant Media, and River Road Entertainment to promote Food, Inc., a documentary that exposes issues with the food industry in America. Beginning today, Chipotle Mexican Grill will host free screenings of the film. In addition, the eatery will advertise Food, Inc. with printed material in its 800-plus stores and prepare a bonus feature about sustainable agriculture to be included in the DVD when it is released later this year.
"Chipotle is a great example of a company that's on the right track to improving our food system," director Robert Kenner said. "Chipotle's philosophy shares many of the same values expressed in Food, Inc., and we are very pleased with their support of our film." The Mexican food chain claims to use more naturally raised poultry and pork than any other restaurant worldwide. It also sources ingredients locally whenever possible and buys 35 percent of its beans from organic producers. This promotion is a smart strategy: if Chipotle's devotees weren't aware of the company's sustainable practices yet, they will be now.

Michael Phelps Will Shine Again in Subway's Spotlight

Subway's ready to test the waters again with spokesperson Michael Phelps: This past Sunday during the US national swimming championships, the sandwichmaker began airing commercial spots starring the Olympic gold medalist. Phelps' year got off to a rocky start when a photo surfaced in February of him smoking marijuana out of a bong.

Within days, USA Swimming had suspended the Olympian from the sport for three months, and Kellogg's decided not to renew its contract with Phelps. Amidst the scandal, the swimming champion was able to hang onto his other major endorsement, Subway - by a thread.

The sandwich chain maintained it was sticking by Phelps, but removed all semblance of Phelps from its website as well as delayed his TV campaign slated for the beginning of the year. The commercials are to reveal that the swimmer - who, at the peak of training, eats as much as 10,000 calories a day - is a fan of Subway's meatball sandwich with jalapeños.

Are You One Smart (Sugar) Cookie?

When it comes to sweet treats, it doesn't get much simpler than a sugar cookie. But this basic biscuit is also incredibly versatile, which is what makes sugar cookies so much fun.

You can cut them in shapes, color them with food coloring, or cover them in icing and sprinkles for various holidays. Speaking of holidays, today is National Sugar Cookie day, so you know what that means: It's time for a test!

Filling and Fast Appetizer: White-Bean Puree

Normally, I am the queen of the kitchen, but recently my sister and her best friend decided to treat me to a homemade dinner. Trish, my sister, is incredibly smart, so I wasn't surprised when she asked Chef Chris Behr, of San Francisco's SPQR, for an easy and delicious appetizer idea. He suggested making a thick white-bean puree for crostini. Trish took his advice and ran with it. The final appetizer was very quick to put together and shockingly good to eat. Who knew white beans mashed with garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil spread on grilled bread would taste so good? It's simple, it's rustic, it's fabulous. I highly recommend you make it the next time you need a rapid hors d'oeuvre. For an instant party, serve it with cheese, olives, and charcuterie. To look at the recipe,

White Bean Puree
Original recipe by Patricia Sweeney

Ingredients

1 (14 ounce) can of white cannelloni beans
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
Grilled bread or crostini for serving

Directions

Put the beans, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Season generously with salt and pepper.
With clean hands, mash the beans combining the ingredients until thick and paste like. If necessary, thin to desired consistency with more oil and lemon juice.
Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy immediately with grilled bread or crostini.

Serves 4-6.
