A spoon rest is a handy kitchen tool that sits on stovetops. In between sautéing and stirring, it's a safe place to rest the spatula or spoon you're using. Sadly, I don't own one and the other day when I was making macaroni and cheese, I finally decided it's time to invest in this practical kitchen essential.

In the January issue of Bon Appétit magazine there's a recipe for homemade, fresh ricotta that I'm dying to try. Although the recipe only calls for three simple ingredients, it requires several cooking utensils. One of them is a good slotted spoon. I know this may be hard to believe, but I don't own a good slotted spoon, I don't even own a bad one! Can you help me find this essential tool so I can finally make the ricotta? Last week, I explained my need for a spoon rest to keep my stovetop splatter-free. I asked you to keep your eyes peeled for spoon rests with fun flair. A Spoon Saves the Day

It's frustrating when a jar lid is exceptionally hard to remove. I always hear my father's voice say, "pretend you're on a desert island and that's all you have to eat." After a childhood of that, I've figured out a no-fail trick for opening difficult jars. The secret ingredient? A simple spoon. Here's what you do:

Hold the spoon in one hand and the jar firmly in the other.
Nestle the spoon in the crack between the lid and the glass. Push up and back. You want to break the seal.
Press up with the spoon to loosen the lid. If the seal does not break, rotate the jar and repeat, pressing up and back with the spoon until you hear a pop.
Let go of the spoon and twist the lid off. It will come of smoothly and easily.

Yum Market Finds: Useful Kitchen Tools

You have been doing an amazing job filling the Yum Market, on TeamSugar with fabulous food-related finds. As I was looking through it today, I noticed several functional, interesting everyday items that I just had to share. The first is a stainless steel soap bar. Redegg says she loves to give this as a gift to cooks because the steel eliminates the smell of garlic, fish, and other strong orders from your hands.

Spice up salad with these flashy, striped serving spoons. Eruntale discovered and saved these fashionable little spoons and totally deserves a round of applause, I love these! Awesome find!

Atkoester found these two-in-one measure and mix bowls. Modern and handsome, these bowls have an internal scale and come in two essential sizes. Their graceful shape allows for perfect pouring.

The Ultimate Kitchen: Kitchen Spoons

If you ask any home cook what her favorite kitchen utensil is, I guarantee that at least half of them (if not more) will say her wooden spoon. A great kitchen spoon is a must have. Without one there is no tasting of broth, no mixing of cookies, none of that. When choosing a kitchen spoon, you want to make sure you pick one that is made from quality materials, if it's wooden, it shouldn't splinter and if it's plastic, it shouldn't melt. You also want to make sure that the spoon you choose is the correct length and size.

To get around the length problem, you might consider a set of 3 wooden spoons. These spoons are made from a French cherry hard wood with a closed grain and come in three different sizes. The sizes, which are 12", 14" and 16", are perfect for stirring items in a tall stock pot, or in a 1" frying pan. Set of three available for $17.50.

If you're more into fashion than form, you might be interested in the Happy and Cheeky spoon set. Available in several different colors (including orange, blue, red and green), these melamine spoons are sure to liven up the kitchen. Another wooden spoon worth looking at is the maple scraping spoon. This spoon, which is made from solid maple, has a unique flat end that is perfect for scraping the bottom of pans or bowls. It will be available beginning March 21 and will retail for $5.95.

Although these spoons aren't cheap (they're $9.95 each), the curvy spoons from the orka company, are made from brightly colored silicone. The best part about these ones is that not only are they great looking, but they're ergonomic, heat-resistant and dishwasher safe. The other thing I really like about them is that unlike wooden spoons, a complete silicone spoon won't run the risk of scratching non-stick surfaces.

Stylish Measuring Spoons
