The Governors Ball Will Be a Sea of Red and Gold

Last week, I gave you a sneak peek at all the delicious food that will be served at the Governors Ball, and this week I'm here to share a gallery of the look. The ball, which is being produced by Cheryl Cecchetto of Sequoia Productions, has been inspired by the fact that it's Oscars 80th anniversary. This year it's all about the gold of the Oscar and the red of the red carpet.

When I walked into the press preview, a sixth of the ballroom had been done up like it would on Oscar night. From the ceiling to the floor, not a single detail was overlooked. The ceiling was coated in glass bubbles that reflect the tiny lights, creating a starry look. The floor was coated in red carpet with gold runners, and the flowers - red roses and gold orchids - matched as well. The tables were either cozy lush velvet or cool, mirrored and sleek. The silverware was gold and the plates were clear. Mirrored walls and railings add another dimension, while mirrored tables and tufted chairs break up the space.

PartySugar Behind the Bash: Fab's Fabulous Party

On Saturday night, I attended a party hosted by FabSugar. The stylish soirée was at San Francisco's Rye and the theme of the party, inspired by a book she recently read, was Blood is the New Black.

Fab took my advice and transformed a section of the bar into a personal party haven. Use these ideas on your next bash and make the space Fab-worthy. Here's what she did:

Arrive early. Fab showed up with a posse of pals at nine. This allowed her to scope out the scene, stake out several tables, and set up decorations.
Use balloons and rose petals to enhance the mood. Fab hung balloons from a nearby wine cage and scattered blood red rose petals across the tables.
Get guests ready to party with photos. Fab's bff brought along her Polaroid camera and snapped pictures of everyone. She left the camera on the tables allowing guests to snap party pics at their own leisure.

Speak with the owners of the bar. Fab talked to the bouncer, Quentin, and let him know where the party was located. When guests arrived and asked for Fab's party, he pointed them in the right direction.

Have fun! Rye doesn't have a dance floor, but that did not stop us from getting our groove on.
Surprise guests with a sweet treat. Cupcakes are so 2007, instead bring French macaroons. These petit treats are just as chic and delightfully tasty. Fab ordered so many, the bakery gave her ten extra for free!

DIY: Glitter Falling Leaves

Last year, as part of my Thanksgiving table setting, I created a hanging decoration of glittery falling leaves. The leaves hung from the chandelier above the dining table.

You will need the following supplies:

leaves
glitter
rubber cement glue
a safety pin
clear string or fishing wire

Here's what you do:

Several weeks before Thanksgiving, go on a walk to collect fallen leaves. Set aside on layers of paper towels to dry in a cool, dark spot.
Purchase glitter from your local craft supply store. I used gold, bronze, rose, and champagne colored glitter on my leaves.
With the sharp side of a safety pin carefully poke a hole in the leaves stem.
String the fishing wire or clear string through the whole and tie a knot. Leave a large piece of slack so you can easily hang the leaves.
Cover your workspace with old newspaper. Brush one side of the leaves with rubber cement. Pour glitter on and shake off the excess. Set aside to let dry over night.
Hang from a chandelier, ceiling, or doorway at various heights to simulate falling leaves.

DIY Bloody Halloween Candles

I'm going a little party-crazy this week in preparation for the huge Halloween bash I'm hosting on Saturday. While I'll be using lots of orange Christmas lights in my decor, candles will also play a huge role in creating a spooky look. Better yet, I've decorated long white taper candles to appear as if they are dripping with blood!

To make these candles, you will need:

white taper candles
one large red candle
old empty bottles
old newspaper
matches or a lighter

Start by creating a work surface. Cover a table with newspaper.
Place the empty bottles on the newspaper and stick the white candles inside the bottles.

Light the red candle and wait a minute for some wax to form.
Gently and carefully pour the red wax onto the white candle, letting it drip and fall.

Repeat with the process on all of the candles until each one is covered in dripping blood. Set aside to dry.
Use to decorate your Halloween party!

The Look: Alice + Olivia in Wonderland

This week my girl FabSugar found herself at the Alice + Olivia Alice in Wonderland themed show. While the clothing is absolutely gorgeous - lots of bold patterns and frilly sleeves - and the hair wonderfully mod, I was really excited to discover that she was on Yum patrol and snapped lots of photos of the nosh and drinks.

An ornate yellow table and matching yellow chairs stood in the center of the room. On the table black, white and yellow dinnerware echoed the black, white and yellow backdrops and furniture in the store - including a suspended upside-down piano.

The table was filled with delightful goodies, such as "Eat Me" labeled cupcakes from Crumbs, black M&Ms, mini pb & j sandwiches and fluffernutter sandwiches too. The perfect finishing touch was definitely the container of Lucid Absinthe - talk about setting the mood! I only wish I could have been there!

The Look: Emmys Governor Ball

The Emmys are this Sunday and the decorating committee is hard at work preparing for the Art Deco themed after party. The look for the post show Governor's Ball is an elegant black and white color scheme that drips of old Hollywood glamour.

The dinner menu -created by chef Joachim Splichal of Los Angeles' Patina restaurant - starts off with a tomato, cucumber, mango, and Dungeness crab tower with a sweet ginger soy reduction sauce. It's followed by a filet mignon and wine braised shortribs aside potatoes fondant and asparagus. Dessert is a milk chocolate mousse with a Champagne gelee served in a dark chocolate cup garnished with fresh berries and cherry vanilla cake. As for the drinks, Voss water, Grey Goose vodka, and Laurent-Perrier Champagne will be served.

Stanlee's Visions Become Reality At The SF Opera Dinner

Yesterday I introduced you to San Francisco's most innovative event planner, Stanlee Gatti who I had the delightful pleasure of interviewing last week. He has an amazingly positive visual outlook on life that he applies to parties. On the day that I chatted with Stanlee, he had to rush off on his shiny purple vespa to the Fairmont Hotel to check on the progress of a dinner he was designing that night for the San Francisco Opera. To my sheer and utter joy, he invited me over to the hotel's Gold Room to take a few insider pictures. Everything was done in shades of gold, cream, and white - creating a hazy, warm, glowing feel to the space. Long rectangular tables with fruit and floral (roses and pears) arrangements ran down the tables, along with strategically placed gold pillars and white candles in hurricane lamp glasses. The place settings were elegantly simple: white with gold trim and the table was covered in a delicate gold lace. The room itself greatly added to the decor and I advise following Gatti's lead by examining the location of your party or wedding reception before you conceptualize the theme. A man after my own heart, Stanlee was full of interesting fun facts during our conversation.

According to Stanlee elephants are the most sensitive and emotional animals after human beings. They have a real sense of feeling closest to that of what a human feels and have been known to express grief and love towards other animals. During the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand, a young girl was actually rescued and delivered to safety by an elephant.

In the 80's Mr. Gatti was the first person to incorporate furniture into an event's landscape changing the life of parties forever with his lounge-y couches and homey decor.

All indigenous Indians - except the Mayans - worshiped Mother Earth. The Mayans worshiped the universe as a whole and believed that every thousand years or so the Earth rejuvenates itself. The end of the Mayan calendar is 2012, following their religious beliefs in this year the earth will rejuvenate. The Mayan definition of "earth rejuvenation" is unclear.

Stanlee believes that a party is its own living entity and once it gets going, you can't control it and he doesn't want to. Gatti doesn't use high tech walkie talkie systems during his events and suggests doing the best you can and letting it go. It is after all, only a party or just a dinner. The best you can do is sit back and have fun. Remember Stanlee's attitude towards party planning while hosting your next event and you are in for a fabulous time. Happy Partying!

The Look: Vanity Fair's Oscar After Party

Last night after the Academy Awards ended, Hollywood's biggest night of parting began. One of the most popular parties, the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, hosted at Morton's by Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter, was deliciously decorated in golden hues and thousands of golden roses. Guests were encouraged to write, eat, smoke, and drink at the event. Pads and pencils were located above each place setting along with a silver zippo lighter engraved with a quote, The only way to find the best actor would be to let everybody play Hamlet and let the best man win, from Humphrey Bogart at the 1951 Academy Awards. Colored cigarettes, Vanity Fair matchboxes, and ashtrays were located on every table throughout the locale. Champagne and Grey Goose vodka were the chosen apertifs and in addition to passed trays filled with lovely hors d'oeuvres stars were offered In-N-Out Burgers. Stars like Madonna, Gwen Stefani, TomKat, and Kirsten Dunst partied late until the night. The Look Of The Governors Ball

While we have to wait until Sunday to see what all of the stars will be wearing at the Oscars, I've been giving you a sneak peek of the recipes that will be served at the Academy Awards official after party, the Governors Ball all week long. As if knowing what the celebs will be eating wasn't enough, I've found some awesome pictures of the decorations at the event space. The Governors Ball is held in the Grand Ballroom on the top level of the Hollywood & Highland Center and is put on by Sequoia Productions (an event planning firm based out of Los Angeles). The decor is set in beautiful shades of white, cream, gold, butter, and burgundy with low lighting, wood details, thousands of candles, and fresh flowers everywhere.
