I really want to try Bon Appétit's recipe for homemade ricotta. Although the recipe calls for three simple ingredients, it requires several cooking utensils. One of them is a good slotted spoon. I don't own a slotted spoon, so I asked you to head off to market in search of one. You bookmarked the spoons in the Yum Market on TeamSugar with the keyword tag Slotted Spoon. The Tovolo spoon that mellie_608 discovered looks perfect. It has a bright red head that will make it easy to find in cluttered kitchen drawers. Tyler Florence's 7 Kitchen Essentials

Yesterday, I dropped by a Macy's Culinary Council event to see Food Network star Tyler Florence. He was kicking off the tour for his two latest books, Stirring the Pot and Dinner at My Place. He talked to a packed audience about his recent move to California, his upcoming plans in the television, wine, and restaurant industries. My favorite part of the discussion, however, was when Tyler talked kitchen essentials.

"I can cook a meal on the top of a car in a junkyard," he declared. He believes anyone can cook with seven essential kitchen tools:

Skillet, for omelets and eggs
Saucepan, for soups and sauces
Larger pot for cooking steaks, tenderloin, and pork chops
Chef's knife, for cutting meat and vegetables
Paring knife, for cutting fruit and smaller items
Bread knife, with serrated edges
Cutting board, for all purposes

Not only were Tyler's tips helpful for those who are new to cooking, but he also demonstrated that one doesn't need to have a bunch of fancy tools to cook a fabulous meal. Are your kitchen essentials the same as Tyler's?

This weekend the Internet went wild over a new breakfast tool. Actually it's not so much a tool as it is an unnecessary accessory. Cut Cake With Kake Kut'rs

As you may know, I'm of the Alton Brown "No unitaskers in the kitchen" camp. However, I just saw this infomercial for Debbie Meyer's Kake Kut'rs ($16.90 for a set of two) and am actually pretty intrigued. The tool, which easily slices cake into various sizes - small, medium, large, tiny, you get to choose! - also doubles as a lifter. You squeeze on the piece you've cut and lift it over to the plate. The video makes it look really simple, and it would definitely be safer than a knife. Since it's a slicer and a lifter, then maybe Alton would approve of its multiuse functionality? Probably not, but it's still pretty cool.

Off To Market Recap: Dishtowels

With the forthcoming arrival of my favorite season of the year (summer) I'm getting ready to spend a lot of time over at my grandfather Al's house. He has an amazing pool and a fabulous kitchen to cook in: it's super open, always clean, and has two ovens. However when I go to clean up after cooking, he never has any nice dishtowels - which can be mildly frustrating. That's why I've asked you to help me by finding Al some new dishtowels. I told you I wanted towels that were durable and simple. No hearts and nothing too girly. You searched for block colors and nautical accents and saved the towels in the Yum Market on TeamSugar with the keyword tag, Dishtowels. The striped (everyone found towels with stripes!) towels that will most match Al's kitchen and persona are:

Al can use these sturdy green stripped towels for everyday use. These practical towels were found by wiggle that said she bought them for a bachelor friend and he loves them. Sounds like they'll be perfect for my bachelor of all bachelors grandfather!

Vuittonish found these muted colored plain dishtowels. It's always good to have a variety of different fabrics with your dishtowels. These will work well for hand drying wine and martini glasses.
