Turkey: White vs. Dark Meat vs. Tofurky

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and people are starting to plan their plates. Will you be serving up white meat or dark? Perhaps you're be skipping the bird altogether and opting for a tofu version instead. Many people who avoid dark meat, thinking it's less healthy than white. Here's handy chart to see how they compare, and we've also added the stats on Tofurky.

To see get a gander at the chart, just

While dark meat does contain a few more calories and fat, it also contains a considerable amount of iron, so go ahead and eat that drumstick you crave. Keep in mind that the skin contains a ton of calories and fat, so feel free to indulge a little, but don't go overboard. As for the Tofurky, I'm surprised to see that it contains so much fat and calories. At least it's low in saturated fat.

Enjoy whichever protein you choose, but remember that these numbers don't include stuffing or gravy on the side. So if you want to save room for a slice of grandma's famous pumpkin pie, limit the turkey fixings.

Would You Eat a 12-Bird Roast?

If you think a turducken is an impressive display of protein, then you haven't seen anything yet. British farmer Anne Petch has created a massive 50 -lb. creation containing 12 different birds - 1. Turkey, 2. Goose, 3. Barbary duck, 4. Guinea fowl, 5. Mallard, 6. Poussin, 7. Quail, 8. Partridge, 9. Pigeon squab, 10. Pheasant, 11. Chicken, 12. Aylesbury duck - each one stuffed inside the next.

Dubbed the True Love Roast because it contains a different bird for each of the 12 days of Christmas, the roast costs around $1300 and serves 125 people. It also takes over 8 hours to cook completely and 4 hours to assemble. The whole thing is definitely extravagant, but I would absolutely have to partake in a bite or three. How about you, would you eat this roast?

Oh and if you think 12 birds isn't enough, Petch is hoping that they'll do a 21-bird roast next year.

Source

Definition: Turducken

Turducken
A deboned turkey that's stuffed with a deboned duck that's stuffed with a deboned chicken. The cavity of the chicken is usually filled with sausage, breadcrumbs, or stuffing. Born in the South in the 1980s, it can be braised, roasted, grilled, or barbecued. Many people serve a turducken in place of the turkey on Thanksgiving.

In fact the chills of the evening lead me to mash up a side of red potatoes last night with dinner, and they were delish. Turns out, mashed potatoes made MSNBC's list of the eight most fattening foods of Fall. Damn.

Here's the complete list of things you may want to stay away from (or at least eat in moderation):

Halloween candy

Mashed potatoes

Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte

Apple pie

Cider

Stuffing

Candy Apple

Turducken

Do you know what "turducken" is? Tell me what you think it is in the comment section below!

If you think shoving 59 hot dogs in your face is wild, how do you feel about pigs' feet and knuckles (the winner recently ate 2.89 pounds of the stuff) or gyoza (212 of them). In fact there are so many competitive eating contests that the folks at Senselist have actually put together a list of their favorite 16 competitive eating contests. Of those 16, my faves include:

Rhubarb Pie: Winner ate 7.9 pounds of rhubarb pie in eight minutes; North Dakota State Fair, July 2006

Jalapeno Peppers: Winner ate 247 pickled jalapenos in eight minutes; State Fair of Texas, October 2006

Strawberry Shortcake: Winner ate 15.25 pounds of strawberry shortcake in eight minutes; Mattituck, NY, June 2007

Chili Cheese Fries: Winner ate 5.44 pounds of fries; Long Beach, CA, February 2007

Whole Turkey: Winner ate 4.8 pounds of turkey in 12 minutes; Artie’s Deli, New York, NY, November 2006

Oh and don't forget, Nathan's hot dog eating contest will actually air on ESPN tomorrow at 12pm ET. While you're waiting for your bbq to warm up, you can watch the much anticipated face-off between Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut (aka that guy who broke Kobayashi's record).

Speaking of records, the list of competitive eating records is pretty darn impressive. 7.75 pounds of turduckens in 12 minutes?!?

Source: SenseList and IFOCE
