As PartySugar mentioned, this year, Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year fall on the same day, which will make for an interesting celebration. On Sunday, I'll actually be ringing in the Lunar New Year with some close relatives, Chinese banquet-style, so I'm reserving the day before to enjoy with my guy. We're keeping it simple and making his favorite meal together: spaghetti topped with giant meatballs, sautéed Winter greens, and traditional shortcake and Champagne for dessert.

Today, Feb. 9, isn't just any old Tuesday: 116 years ago, a small confectioner by the name of Milton Hershey founded his own company. More than 11 decades later, the brand is one of the biggest candy confectioneries in the world, with upwards of 14,000 employees and more than $5 billion in sweets sales.

Yesterday's sangria got me thinking about girly cocktails. The Shamelessly Girly Cocktail is unmistakable. I believe it all began with the Cosmopolitan, which kick-started a drink trend of anything ending in "-tini" or topped with hearts.

Rather than going out to buy something for your sweetheart, stay in and bake these homemade Milano cookies. Everyone is familiar with the delicious Pepperidge Farms treats, with their crisp and crumbly cookies sandwiching a thin layer of chocolate. However, the homemade variation takes the cake — or that is, the cookie!

I'll be up front and say that Valentine's Day is not my favorite holiday. I'm an idealist who believes that every day should be full of love and affection. But I do appreciate that it's the perfect excuse to eat a surplus of chocolate, and better yet, just about the only occasion when it's acceptable to drink ridiculously girly cocktails.

Recently, we received a shipment of conversation hearts from Necco, the company that makes Sweethearts. This year, the nostalgic candies haven't just gone high tech in their messaging — they've also got completely new flavors and even a special Twilight version. As a traditionalist, I abhor the new flavors; they're too fancy.

This year, instead of picking up a standard box of chocolate, grab a chocolate bar. With a box of chocolates, there's always the inevitable ones you don't like, but if you get a bar, you can select your favorite flavor and enjoy the whole thing! It's also incredibly romantic tearing off a chunk of chocolate while sipping a glass of red wine.

This year for Valentine's Day, I wanted to make something special for my nonexistent boyfriend, but I couldn't decide between luxurious red velvet cake or rich fudgey brownies. While I was pondering this dilemma, I suddenly remembered an old recipe for brownie heart cupcakes. Inspired by Martha, I decided to combine the best of both worlds and make red velvet cupcakes with pink cream cheese frosting and brownie heart garnish.
