When I went to UC Berkeley there was a cafe on Telegraph Avenue, Intermezzo, that I (well, everyone) would frequent. Known for its vegetarian cuisine, Intermezzo made excellent soups, salads, and sandwiches. I loved everything about this place, except for one small thing: the sandwiches came with sprouts!

Recently I served grilled bacon-wrapped jalapeños at a party. Since my girlfriend Melissa — who's a vegetarian — was in attendance, I made some wrapped in basil instead of bacon. While I normally try to offer a meal that everyone can enjoy (without creating more work for myself!), this wasn't the first time I've made one dish for vegetarians and another for meat-eaters.

PETA Leads Zombie Protest Outside Manhattan KFC
Animal-rights activism group PETA has come out with yet another inflammatory campaign. This year, they kicked their off Halloween festivities a few weeks early: On Saturday, more than 100 people gathered outside a Herald Square KFC dressed as blood-drenched zombies, holding signs that said, "I'd rather be dead than eat at KFC!"
The protest was part of the Kentucky Fried Cruelty campaign, which addresses concerns about KFC suppliers' treatment of chickens on farms and slaughterhouses.

Last week we introduced you to the gastrosexual, a macho man who enjoys spending time in the kitchen, and today I bring you the predicament of the male vegetarian. While masculinity is often associated with meat-eating, a recent Guardian article by vegetarian Barbara Ellen argues that being a male vegetarian requires more manliness than being a carnivore:

The other day I was eating out with a vegetarian girlfriend. While she doesn't mind my consumption of meat, I ordered vegetarian dishes so we could share everything. This wasn't the first time I avoided eating meat while dining with a vegetarian.
