Stemless Wine Glasses: Love Them or Hate Them?

In recent years, stemless wine glasses have really seemed to gain traction in the marketplace, and the leading stemless wine glass maker, Riedel, even releases limited-edition versions of its wildly popular stemless styles.

But yesterday, San Francisco Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer questioned the functionality of stemless wine glasses, pointing out that wine poured in stemless wine glasses measured three degrees warmer than the same wine poured in a stemmed glass - a significant difference in temperature when it comes to the enjoyment of wine.

To Curb Drinking, UK Mandates Smaller Wine Glasses

UK officials are hoping that a simple swap of the dishes will be the quick fix for some of the country's social problems. According to official figures, 43 percent of middle-class professionals exceed safe alcohol guidelines. Experts are putting the blame on the upward size trend of wine glasses. That's why next month, ministers plan to release a mandatory code of practice requiring all venues serving alcohol to offer customers a choice of drink size.
While a standard wine glass once held 125 ml - a little over 4 ounces - many establishments now consider this a "small" size. A large size rings in at 250 ml - a serving that could equal as much as one-third of a bottle of wine. And at least 10 percent of UK bars have been using 250 ml as a standard-sized wine glass. "Glass sizes have increased over the years, as has the strength of wine," said Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo. "Too often the only size available is a large glass. I would like to see more choice available, so people can opt for a small glass."

Wine Appetizer Tray: Love It Or Hate It?

Last week I asked you guys what you thought of a set of white cocktail party plates that allow you to hold your wine glass on the side. I love the concept and liked their modern look. However, a bunch of you thought they looked too cheap. Well, TeamSugar member corkie bookmarked these similar wine and dine appetizer trays. This time they're wooden and are a bit more rustic looking. I still prefer the modern ones, but what do you think?

Do It Yourself Photo Wine Glass Markers: Love It Or Hate It?

I consider myself a pretty crafty person: I love making collages, homemade cards, and fun little invitations. So when I came across this project on Craftzine to create your own drink markers and authentic photo framed wine glasses, I got super excited. It's recommended that you use random close up shots of your friends and family, but think about the endless possibilities! At a tropical party you could do pictures of lush beaches and serve sangria. During the winter holidays, shiny wrapping paper will be beautifully magnified for guests to see while they sip their Zin. Although, I love this idea and will most likely give it a whirl in the future, I'm a teeny bit skeptical. How can you wash the glasses? What happens when I tire of the pictures and want to change them? Will the glue leave a residue on my lovely stemware? How about you? What do you think? Simple Tip: Easy Way To Dry Wine Glasses

Drying wine glasses can sometimes be a pain. Towels can leave awful streaks and lint, and sitting them on the counter causes condensation spots to form, and besides the lip is making a perfect seal with the counter meaning there's no air coming in to help out. Just imagine, if only there was a way to get air flowing into the glass... Turns out there is and it's one of those "'Doh! Why didn't I think of that?" tricks. To dry your wine glasses, just set down two chopsticks parallel on top of a dishtowel and place the glass on top! Square shaped chopsticks work best, but as long as you set them far enough apart, the round ones work too.

Drink Wine Without Stains

Last week, YumSugar and I were at a New Zealand wine tasting and I was a little worried about the new, crisp white shirt I was wearing. Usually to be on the safe side, I don't drink red wine when wearing white, but since this was a wine tasting, red wine would be consumed. I buttoned up my jacket until I started talking with Dan, an intelligent Wine Spectator editor. He had wrapped a napkin around the stem of his glass to ensure that any wine - red or white - that happened to drip down the side of the glass (which it inevitably always does at one point or another) would be absorbed by the napkin and not your shirt, dress, or pants. The napkin doubles as a glass identifier when the glass is placed on a table with other glasses you can immediately identify which glass is yours.

My Other Half Wine Glasses: Love It Or Hate It?

British product designer, and recent art school graduate, Jim Rokos, has come up with a clever idea called "My Other Half" which comprises of a pair of wine glasses connected by a tube. The liquid fills up and forces its own level line which tries to balance the glasses. The glasses have to be held up to mouths simultaneously or the wine will spill all over the person who was too slow to raise their glass. Translation: if you don't play nice, neither of you will get to drink the wine and the slowpoke will end up covered in it. Interested parties can order a set for £220 + S&H ($440 + S&H).
