Joey Chestnut Does It Again

This afternoon, over 20,000 fans packed the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Penn., to see the sixteenth annual Wing Bowl. Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, who was the reigning champion, held onto his title by chowing down on 241 chicken wings in 30 minutes. This was 14 more than his nearest competitor Patrick Bertoletti and 36 more than third place Bill "El Wingador" Simmons.

For his gastronomic feat, Chestnut - when did he obtain the nickname "Jaws"? I swear he didn't have it for the Fourth of July Hot Dog Contest - received a Toyota Tundra, a 2008 Black 883 Sportster motorcycle, a championship ring, and, of course, all the bragging rights.

So what do you folks think, could you eat that many wings in 30 minutes? Could you even eat half the amount? Also, can you believe the number of folks who attended? From the look of things, this place was packed!

Super Bowl Fans' Feathers Ruffled Over Buffalo Wing Shortage

Super Bowl XLIII is less than a week away, but this year, lovers of the chicken wing - game day's unofficial snack - will be enjoying their poultry on a wing and a prayer. Since few Super Bowl parties are without chicken wings, consumer demand, as it generally is during football season, is sky-high. Unfortunately, the supply for chicken wings is way down. Major wing supplier Pilgrim's Pride of Pittsburgh, TX, recently filed Chapter 11 company reorganization. As a result, the price of wings is soaring nationwide, and in some cases, up to 30 percent in the past three months.

Consumers, restaurants, and distributors are handling the crisis in different ways. Some are setting aside vast quantities of wings for the big game. Other restaurants, feeling the pinch, have doubled the prices of wings on their menu.

In turn, customers, like the wing lovers of Buffalo, NY, the birthplace of the spicy chicken wing, are so fed up with astronomical prices that they've called for a wing boycott. This year I'll be serving buffalo chicken fingers or buffalo chicken cheese dip instead of wings.

This Football Season, It'll Be Harder to Score Chicken Wings

St. Louis Rams fans: if you think a winning touchdown has been impossible this season, just wait until you try to score some buffalo chicken wings.

Wing demand is on the rise, but due to this year's waning need for chicken breast, poultry producers have cut chicken production for the first time in 36 years. Broiler chicken production is forecast to be down 3.5 percent this year - and, with only two wings per chicken, wholesale wing costs are poised to increase dramatically.

So, much like Super Bowl Sunday last year, on game day other spicy chicken dishes will just have to fly. Since what I really want to eat is buffalo chicken cheese dip, that's fine with me. Will you miss this year's wings? Or are you willing to pay a higher price for them?

The Super Bowl is quickly approaching, and I'm sure quite a few of you are planning parties and stocking up on football food. While just about every state chows down on the stuff, the folks at Wal-Mart wondered which states consume the most "football food." So they looked at the number of purchases and came up with the following discoveries. It's sort of interesting to see which states top the snackfood list. What do you think? Pizza Hut Diversifies, but Claims It Hasn't Changed Names

Recently, Domino's has overloaded on carbs with pasta bread bowls, Wendy's has supplemented its menu with boneless chicken wings, and Burger King's realized its destiny with pork ribs. Along the same lines, Pizza Hut has expanded its horizons, adding lasagna, pasta, and buffalo chicken to its lineup. But - contrary to public speculation - the fast food company will not be abbreviating its name. In light of rumors that the franchise was shortening its name to "The Hut," Pizza Hut has made an official statement that it has no plans for a name change.

“Pizza Hut is not changing its name. We are proud of our name and heritage and will continue to be Pizza Hut. We do use ‘The Hut’ in some of our marketing efforts," Brian Niccol, the company's chief marketing officer, clarified. The company, which is best known for its fast-delivery pizzas, has attempted to overcome poor sales by expanding its repertoire to include other food items and using the shortened nickname "The Hut." The chain is also launching a new "Big Eat Tiny Price" value menu.

Let's Dish: What Will You Eat During the Super Bowl?

I've always looked forward to the Super Bowl. Not because I'm a huge football fan, but because I'm a foodie. It's an excuse to unashamedly devour nachos, chili and buffalo wings. Anything excessive, spicy, unhealthy, and cheesy is welcome on the Super Bowl table.

This year I'm thinking about serving either an Italian menu (with pepperoni pizza dip and Italian sausage meatball sandwiches) or a more traditional menu (with guacamole and cheddar beer soup).

How about you? What's on your Super Bowl menu? If you aren't cooking, what do you plan on eating while you watch the game?

Monday's Leftovers: Frisée Salad With Bacon and Dates

The (Super Bowl) party's over, and your stomach's really taken one for the team - it's still reeling from the buffalo wings and peanut butter brownies that you scarfed down.

If you've got leftover bacon, use it to accent the flavor on a leafy Winter salad. With its ruffled frisée leaves, peppery red onion, crunchy walnuts, and tart sherry vinegar, this refreshing salad might be the antidote you were looking for after a weekend of big league eating.

Frisée Salad With Bacon And Dates
From Bon Appétit

Ingredients

3 bacon slices, chopped
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 teaspoons honey, divided
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion
2 tablespoons Sherry wine vinegar
1 large head of frisée, torn (about 4 cups)
2 1/2 ounces soft fresh goat cheese (about 1/2 of 5-ounce log), crumbled
1/3 cup walnut halves

Directions

Cook bacon in heavy small skillet over medium heat until crisp. Using slotted spoon, transfer to plate. Reserve 1 tablespoon bacon drippings in skillet.
Add olive oil, 3 teaspoons honey, dates, and onion to skillet. Stir in vinegar. Season dressing with salt and pepper.
Place frisée in medium bowl; add dressing and toss. Divide salad between 2 plates. Sprinkle with cheese and nuts.

Serves 2.

Come Party With Me: Super Bowl Party - Menu

Technically the Super Bowl is not a holiday, but it's such a celebrated day that it really should be considered a holiday. I've always wondered why they (they = the people in charge, ex. the US government) don't schedule the game for a Monday instead of a Sunday and let everyone in the nation have the day off to watch the game? When I say everyone, I mean everyone - even the people who work at Safeway and McDonalds. It could be called National Super Bowl Day, or for those who are seriously PC, National Football Appreciation Day. Is there any other day that is so whole heartedly American and celebrated by all religious groups, ethnicities, and ages? I think not and thats why it's time to appropriately go incredibly over the top when planning your Super Bowl Party. I'm cheering for the Chicago Bears (because my mom was born in Baltimore-the original home of the Colts who packed up their team in the middle of the night and sneakily moved to Indianapolis - ask any true Baltimorian who they want to win and they will answer: The Bears) and made fun little blue and orange football shaped invites. Below I have compiled a menu of my favorite Super Bowl Sunday dishes that I only splurge on once a year. It's Super Bowl food, it's not supposed to be healthy. To start I'll have a smorsgasbord of appetizers to be consumed during the first and second quarters. Classic Spinach Dip and Baked Feta and Goat Cheese with Marinara will be paired with french bread croutons. You can't have the Super Bowl without nachos or chicken wings and I'll do my own interpretations with the Best Ever Nacho Layer Dip (if you only make one of my recipes make this one! I've been making it for four years and it gets rave reviews every time) and Chipotle Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese Dip. After Prince's performance during half-time, I'll bowl up the main course: a hearty Chili with Cornbread Topping. Finally if people are still hungry or craving something to satisfy their sweet tooth, during the fourth quarter commercials I'll plate a delightfully divine dessert: Black Bottom Chocolate Pie.
