Winter squash are to Fall as tomatoes are to Summer. Much like tomatoes, squash are usually considered vegetables, despite the fact that they are actually botanically classified as fruits. And, just like tomatoes, they're unavoidable this season, and come in so many countless varieties that it's hard to keep track of all of them.

Perhaps the most-loved variety of Winter squash, butternut squash is to Thanksgiving what pumpkin is to Halloween: ubiquitous. Ok I know that we are in the middle of winter, but I still like to use autumnal ingredients while they are in grocery stores. Squash, sweet potatoes, cranberries: I love them so much that I have to incorporate these flavors into my meals even after the holiday season has passed. Shouldn't we take complete advantage of what's in season now and overdose on anything that we may not be able to find in a few weeks?

When I was in high school my friends and I got together every year for a party we called 'Friend Christmas'. Instead of having to purchase gifts for all of the girlies in our circle we did a Secret Santa exchange. The sleepover was a highlight of the Christmas holidays, one full of gossip and cookies.
