Nonni's Makes It Rain Meatballs With New World Record

When I saw the trailer for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, I wondered: what could be better than living in an alternate universe where it rains meatballs? Well, I think I've found my answer.

It's a 222.5-pound meatball that emerged over the weekend, blowing all other past meatball records out of the water. The gargantuan ground beef spectacle, which was created by Matthew Mitnitsky of Nonni's Italian Eatery in Concord, NH, was confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records to be the (new) record holder of the world's largest meatball, beating out a recent 198.6-pound feat created on Jimmy Kimmel.

The best part? The now-famous meatball was broken down into manageable portions, then packaged and delivered to local shelters. What do you think? Delicious or disgusting?

World's Largest Burger Among New Record-Setting Foods

It's a tale that'll go down in burger history. At an event this week in London, Guinness World Records revealed a host of new record breakers, among them a 185-pound, $499 whopper of a hamburger, which is officially the world's largest. The record belongs to Mallie's Sports Grill and Bar in Southgate, MI. Owner Steve Mallie, who said the bun must be baked for eight hours and the burger for 15 hours, remarked, "Being in the book is the greatest accomplishment we've ever done. I've worked my entire life to build this restaurant and being able to have the notoriety of Guinness makes it just that bit more rewarding."It seems, in today's world, that everything bigger is better. This week alone, Westhoughton, UK, garnered attention for serving the world's most massive English breakfast (10 sausages,10 rashers of bacon, 10 slices of toast, 10 eggs, fives slices of black pudding, and tomatoes, mushrooms, and black beans); Sacramento, CA, made headlines for a 42-foot-long, 1,200-pound tamale; and Valencians in Spain managed to assemble the world's longest restaurant table. At this rate, the next record will need to be for the world's most capable scale. Are these feats, like the Mallie's burger, legendary stuff, or simply gross?

Spain Scores Record For World's Longest Restaurant Table

Perhaps the world's lengthiest dosa has finally found its place at table.

Over the weekend, a dining table measuring 1.258 kilometers, or more than three quarters of a mile, entered the Guinness World Records. The front-page furniture hailed from the Valencian town of El Campello in Spain.

The feat was made up of tables from at least 60 various local restaurants. Restaurants that contributed space were allowed to decorate, wait on, and serve diners at these tables to their liking. Despite the fact that the record-setting structure beat out an 2007 record held by a restaurant in Vienna, Austria, that was 1.176 kilometers long, every single seat at at the table was occupied. India Chain Claims to Be Home to Longest Ever Dosa

To be filed right next to New Delhi's record for the world's largest biryani: Sankalp, a restaurant chain based in the city of Ahmedabad, India, claims to have made the world's longest dosa.

The mammoth dosa - a crepelike South Indian specialty made from rice and black lentils - was created last Wednesday and measured in at 32 feet and 5 inches long, taking less than 40 minutes to put together. To make the behemoth, a team of 16 chefs practiced for 10 days, working to achieve the correct length by maintaining a steady temperature across the entire dosa, while handling a tawa, or hot plate, that was 35 feet long. The finished product was named "Quick Gun Murungun," the title of an upcoming movie that discusses the merits of being vegetarian.

As a lover of all things South Indian, especially dosas, this leaves me with only two questions: Was the dosa filled? And do they still need someone to eat it? What do you think of the record? Have you ever tried a dosa?

World's Largest Cupcake Attempt Is a Sweet Success

Another one to add to the list of highly unconventional cupcakes: This 1,224-pound behemoth of a baked good, which just knocked out a recent record contender for the title of world's largest cupcake.

The prodigious pastry, which composed of triple vanilla cake batter and topped with pink frosting, was more than eight times the size of the previous record holder in girth. It stood 4 feet tall and spanned 11 feet around, and was created by Manchester, NH-based GourmetGiftBaskets.com. It required 800 eggs, 200 pounds each of sugar and flour, five days of preparation, and 12 hours of baking time.
Slices of the cupcake were served over the weekend at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise Classic Car Show in Detroit, MI, in exchange for donations to breast cancer foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Even though the cupcake contained an estimated 2 million calories, I wouldn't have been able to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime indulgence. Covent Garden Cupcake Takes the Cake as World's Largest

The cupcake craze is hardly over. Yesterday, hundreds of cupcake consumers crowded London's Covent Garden to witness the cutting of what is now the world's largest cupcake. The oversized confection, which was baked and iced by acclaimed pastry chef Michelle Wibowo, was created to honor the city's Covent Garden Real Food Market, and weighed over 330 pounds. Other important statistics: The cupcake measured 1.25-x-1.2 meters (approximately 4-x-4 feet), and was designed to feed 2,000 people, requiring more than 50 hours of labor and 200 eggs.To make a pastry of such scale, Wibowo, over the course of five days, whipped up batches of smaller-sized sponge cakes, and layered them, eventually carving the masterpiece into a cupcake shape. "I dread to think how many calories it has," she remarked. I'm still attempting to wrap my head around the fact that a cupcake - which, by definition, is a miniature cake - can weigh in at over 300 pounds. Then again, I suppose, with all its layers, that the pièce de résistance is technically more cake than it is cupcake. Still, I'd love to get my hands on some of it. Woman Breaks World Record For Eating World's Hottest Chiles

For some spice lovers, jalapeno-laden hamburgers just won't do. Take Anandita Dutta Tamuly, a 26-year-old woman from Assam, India, who set a Guinness world record last week when she consumed 51 of the world's hottest chile peppers in only two minutes. She also rubbed 24 of the same chile peppers in her eyes over the span of one minute.

Overseeing the feat with a watchful eye was none other than chef Gordon Ramsay, who was in India filming for a British TV program. The reality show host and restaurateur could only consume one of the peppers before screaming for water. Measuring in at 1 million Scoville heat units, the bhut jolokia is known to the be world's hottest known chile pepper (jalapenos, in comparison, contain roughly 2,500 to 8,000 Scovilles.)

A single seed from this pepper is known to cause puffy, watering eyes, a runny nose, and a burning sensation that may last for up to five hours. So how did she manage to defy the laws of nature? The mother of one explained:

I have been eating bhut jolokia since my childhood and never felt the hotness in my mouth. When I was five, I had a sore tongue and my mother applied a chili paste to cure the infection. Since then I developed a penchant for chiles. To be honest, I barely notice them now.

I'm shocked to hear that this record was humanly possible - especially considering the tragic death that occurred last year after a UK man consumed too much spicy sauce. What do you think of the stunt: is it amazing, or simply incredibly foolish?

Scotland Sets Record For World's Tallest Pancake Stack

To celebrate National Pancake Day yesterday, IHOP was serving up flapjacks for free. The only breakfast our nation cared about, it seemed, was the short stack. But across the pond in Glasgow, Scotland, a couple of chefs were more concerned about the tallest stack of pancakes. In fact, two chefs, Sean McGinlay and Natalie King of Glasgow's Hilton Grosvenor hotel, claim to have broken the record for the steepest stack of pancakes in the world.

The tower of 672 flapjacks measured in at 29.5 inches high, tottering over the standing world record of 29.1 inches, set by a Slovenian team last August. Guinness will still need to confirm the record. In order to prepare for the challenge, the chefs mixed over 17 pints of milk, 100 eggs, 11 pounds of flour, and 6.6 pounds of butter. The key to their success? The perfect stacking technique. Said hotel general manager Stuart Nelson:

Sean McGinlay and the kitchen team have spent a great deal of time this week perfecting their pancake recipes and stacking techniques . . . It was a bit shaky towards the end, but somehow we managed to pull it off.

Judging from the height of the pancake stack, it looks like defeating this new record will be a tall order. Wouldn't you love to help clean up after the event?

Peru Reclaims Record For Largest Serving of Ceviche

Yesterday, the residents of Callao, Peru were up to something fishy. Four-hundred-fifty students and chefs were elbow-deep in whitefish, lime, onions, and peppers in an attempt to break the world record for the biggest serving of ceviche, a seafood dish in which raw fish is "cooked" by the acid of lime juice.

The dish weighed in at a record-breaking 6.8 tons, more than 2 tons heavier than the existing record of 4.5 tons, a record that was made in Mexico. The record is a huge feat for Peru, a country that claims ceviche as its own.

"In the name of Peru, we can take back the Guinness record," declared Alexander Kouri, Callao's regional president. A Guinness Book of World Records representative was present to make the count official.

Outside the stadium where the record was broken, hundreds waited to taste a plate of the prize.

"What tacos are to Mexicans, ceviche is to us," said Ronald Espinoza, one of the students preparing the dish. "A Peruvian who does not eat ceviche is not Peruvian."

Meet the World's Largest Irish Coffee

Earlier today, at 1 p.m. PST to be exact, history was made at the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco. Irish coffee making champion Frank Silletti, in conjecture with the staff of the Buena Vista, made the world's largest Irish coffee. I was there to witness them break the Guinness World Record.

It was a cool but clear sunny day in San Francisco, perfect for enjoying a coffee spiked with whiskey and topped with a thick, creamy head. The bar was packed with fans, old and young, waiting to watch as the oversize cup was hoisted onto the bar. The three-foot tall glass - that can hold up to 15 gallons - was blown specifically for the occasion. A case of Tullamore Dew filled the glass one-third full as the scent of whiskey permeated the air. A box of confectioner's sugar and countless pots of fresh-brewed, sustainably grown organic coffee was added to the gigantic glass as the crowd cheered in anticipation. Just-whipped heavy cream topped off the concoction to create the world's largest Irish coffee.

After the drink was made, the staff worked quickly to transfer the concoction to smaller glasses which they then passed out to everyone in attendance. The atmosphere was lively and the people friendly. Since the drink was created 56 years ago, the cafe estimates it has served 37,010,000 Irish coffees; that's roughly 2,000 a day. It's only natural that they hold the record for the world's largest drink.

It was very exciting to be a part of the bar's history.
