Three different students at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls attempted suicide in the past year, according to the National Enquirer’s review of local reports. In each case the attempts were thankfully unsuccessful, and details were kept private out of consideration for the girls and their families. One girl was recently expelled when her behavior and a suicide attempt made it apparent that she was mentally ill
One student recently became suicidal after showing signs of mental illness and becoming disruptive in the classroom.

The dilemma of caring for her ailing 73-year-old mom is causing the talk show diva a lot of stress. According to the National Enquirer, Oprah’s mom is as feisty and independent as her daughter, and refuses to move in with her or go to an assisted living facility.

Oprah Winfrey has bought her ever-present best friend, Gale, a penthouse in New York City for $7.1 million. Page Six reports that it was purchased by a business with the name of Oprah’s recently departed cocker spaniel, Sophie:

couple of weeks ago we reported on how Tina Fey, star and creator of the super-funny “30 Rock,” was dreaming of casting Oprah Winfrey as her best friend on the show. That dream may become a reality, according to a source who was at a recent taping of Oprah’s show, on which Tina was a guest.

Just last week, Hollyscoop heard news out of Oprah’s camp that she intends on riding out her contract with ABC to keep her talk show up and running. But now Bossip is reporting that she’s just signed a three-year deal with HBO to develop and produce scripted programming.
The deal will include Oprah-influenced series, miniseries, movies, and documentaries to HBO, and will go into effect in 2009.

While I would never bet against the Oprah Winfrey franchise continuing to grow the New York Times just wrote an article saying the “O” brand is currently in a down turn.
According to Nielsen Media Research, the average audience for The Oprah Winfrey Show has fallen nearly 7 percent this year, the third straight year of decline.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the sales of O, The Oprah Magazine, has fallen by more than 10 percent in the last three years, and the magazine is now seeking a new editor in chief after the announced retirement of its longtime steward, Amy Gross.

Oprah is being sued by the former headmistress of her South African school. Nomvuto Mzamane, who was in charge of heading up the South African Leadership Academy for Girls, filed a lawsuit Friday in Philadelphia against Oprah.
The civil suit claims Winfrey "launched what amounted to a defamatory campaign" against Mzamane late last year by implying that Mzamane is "untrustworthy, failed the students of the academy, did not care about the students at the academy, knew of alleged physical and sexual abuse at the academy and participated in a cover-up of the alleged abuse."
