Anyone familiar with Slacker Radio?

** PUBLIC POST **

I've gotten quite discouraged with XM lately. They've killed off a couple of my favorite stations, and I'm generally not thrilled with the way the merger with Sirius is going. Discovered something called "Slacker Radio" over the weekend. (www.slacker.com)

It's internet radio, with loads of finely-sliced stations set up by genres. You can mark songs as "favorites" or "ban" them as they play, and the service will (supposedly) adjust future playlists accordingly. You can also "skip" songs. (If anyone uses or remembers Yahoo radio, it sounds like a similar concept.) The basic service is free, but you can opt for a premium service, which also lets you save songs for future playback.

In addition, there's a portable player. Best Buy carries them.

Anyone have any remarks on the service or the equipment?
Would this be suitable for the car?

Imeem and Internet Radio doomed.

I am so bothered that my internet music listening experience is in danger of becoming non-existant. I have recently become addicted to Imeem and now I am hearing it has been sued by Warner music. Many of the tracks on my playlists have shrunk to 30 second previews.

Regular interent radio is also in danger... On July 15th Retroactive royalty rates will be increased and I'm not sure all of my favorite online radio sites will be able to pay up.

It really sucks.

R.I.P Net radio?

On March 2, the Copyright Royalty Board-(http://www.loc.gov/crb/)- a legislative body specializing in copyright license law-- approved a ruling that upped the royalty rates providers of digital radio streams pay to SoundExchange (http://www.soundexchange.com/), a not-for-profit performer's rights group operating on behalf of music copyright owners. SoundExchange collects checks from broadcasters and funnels that money back to the songwriters.

For reasons they can't quite seem to articulate, SoundExchange treats terrestrial radio royalties differently than those of both internet and satellite broadcasters, with the money they collect from the latter two heading not just to songwriters but to performers and record companies. In order to more fairly compensate artists after the three-way split from every check, the March 2 decision changed the payout from a small hourly rate to a per-song fee.

On July 15, broadcasters will have to pony up 7/100 of a penny for every listener to every song they've played retroactive to January 1 of 2006, a cost that will gradually increase to near nearly triple that by 2010.

7/100 of a cent might not seem like much. But think about NPR affiliates supported by listener donations, or consider the literally thousands of streaming stations operating around the clock on popular sites like Live365, running on little more than the pluck of their DJs. These stations exist because of their operators' commitment to bringing free music to listeners. So many stations offer an alternative to the sad state of Clear Channel -controlled terrestrial radio, with the freedom to explore sounds as far out as they see fit. These stations will likely crumble under the new rates, marking a silencing of an untold wealth of free expression and the transmission of new sounds.

We're all for artists getting their due, and to that end, the argument for letting the decision stand has legs, in theory. The higher fees leveraged against broadcasters would ostensibly mean more dough for artists, although even that appears to be negligible. Reports vary, but the average artist's payout after the rate increase will still only be in the neighborhood of a few hundred bucks per year. And is that really worth the price of untold numbers of small broadcasters being put out of business?

Corporate-backed net radio stations like AOL Radio likely have the bank to soldier on despite the rate increases (if they decide it's even worth the investment), but the decision will squeeze out the venues more likely to rock Apparat than Akon. It's a tired adage, but often all too true: the rich will get richer from this deal, while the little guys lose another way to have their voices heard.

Net radio's vast listenership has cried foul, and now, some parts of Washington seem to be catching on. Bills have been introduced into both the House and Senate attempting to halt the rate increase and the July 15 due date for the royalty payments. The Senatorial bill does the House action one further by allowing a provision to refund all royalties paid above the old level should the bill itself pass after July 15.

To support these bills, call or write your local representative, or pop on over to savenetradio.org (http://www.savenetradio.org/), the leading website in the struggle against this decision, for more information.

Because, in the end, do we really want these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYZre8kEsuw) people exerting even more power over what we can and can't listen to?

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/43064-rip-internet-radio-7150...

~This is particularly upsetting to me as I can't bring myself to listen to commercial FM radio at all anymore. All I ever hear are the same 5 songs played over and over again. There is so much more to listen to out there, and it is so easy to discover fantastic new bands by way of net radio. I really hope something can be done. ~ Lore

Don Imus Returns to Radio

Yahoo News
By ADAM GOLDMAN, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - Will Don Imus be defiant or contrite? Will he mock his skeptics while making his triumphant return to radio Monday. Or will he muzzle his mouth?

"That question is part of the drama of his reemergence," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, an industry trade journal. "Imus faces some choices."

Imus isn't talking, yet, but it's safe to say radio's best-known curmudgeon will have lots to say when his show kicks off at 6 a.m. EST Monday on WABC-AM and other Citadel Broadcasting Corp. stations around the country, ending his nearly eight-month banishment from the air.

The morning show will be simulcast on cable's RFD-TV, owned by the Rural Media Group Inc., and rebroadcast on radio in the evenings.

Monday's four-hour premiere will be broadcast from Town Hall in Times Square, where $100 tickets were sold to benefit the Imus Ranch for Kids With Cancer. After its debut, the Imus spectacle will be on 6-9 a.m. weekdays, from a studio across the street from Madison Square Garden.

Not much is known about the show's format, other than at least one black person will participate regularly, along with longtime newsreader Charles McCord. Imus, through a spokesman, declined to comment.

Whether this will temper his staunchest critics, like as Rev. Al Sharpton, is unclear. Sharpton's spokeswoman said the civil rights leader wasn't commenting. In Boston on Friday, a group of black community leaders protested a local station's plan to air the Imus program.

MSNBC and then CBS Radio jettisoned Imus in April after he called the Rutgers University women's basketball players "nappy-headed hos."

Imus' nemesis, Howard Stern, told The Associated Press in a recent interview that his acerbic competitor's career had peaked.

"At this point, I don't think he's very relevant," Stern said. "People will tune out within a week. I defy you to listen. It's like a rodeo - you know, see how long you can ride a bull? See how long you can keep listening to Imus."

The people who helped orchestrate the Imus comeback believe he'll succeed and say he's learned his lesson since the Rutgers debacle.

"I don't have any doubt on his future," said Phil Boyce, WABC-AM program director. "He'll obviously be wiser, smarter and a bit more careful. He's learned from this. I'm not concerned that he'll have a repeat."

"Obviously we are doing this because we think we can make more money," Boyce said. "There's an opportunity to charge more for our advertising rates. I am not ashamed of saying it is about the money. We are running a business."

RFD reaches nearly 30 million homes, but with Imus on board the 24-hour cable network hopes to boost that number to 50 million over the next two years.

Rural Media Group Inc., which caters to a rural audience, hopes to crack urban markets with the mass appeal of Imus. Love him or hate him, people will tune into Imus, said Patrick Gottsch, founder and president.

"There is a real void in the morning with Don Imus not on the air," Gottsch said. "He's apologized heavily for the comments. He knew he made a mistake. You learn, you move on and I think most folks already have forgiven him."

Neither Boyce nor Gottsch would reveal how much money Imus is getting.

"It's the biggest deal by far we've ever done," Gottsch said. Imus signed a five-year agreement with RFD.

Boyce said he's paying to get the real Imus, and expects that to be the personality that emerges Monday.

"I'm not too worried that we're not gonna get the real deal," Boyce said.

But listeners might experience a different Imus, the same one who has morphed over the years, according to Harrison.

"Imus is just an interesting character," Harrison said. "I don't think that he is premeditated. I think he is a creature of the moment. He's a spontaneous human being. This is what he is. He has evolved over the years. Imus has been never stagnant. The tenets of his performances changed over there years by reinventing himself as the times demanded."

"If they're expecting him to stumble, they're going to have to wait for a long time," Harrison said.

How do you feel about his return?

Cyclone death toll nears 4,000 in Myanmar, state radio says

YANGON, Myanmar - Almost 4,000 people were killed and nearly 3,000 others are unaccounted for after a devastating cyclone in Myanmar, a state radio station said Monday.

Foreign Minister Nyan Win told foreign diplomats at a briefing that the death toll could reach 10,000, according to diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was held behind closed doors.

Tropical Cyclone Nargis hit the Southeast Asian country, also known as Burma, early Saturday with winds of up to 120 mph, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

The government had previously put the death toll countrywide at 351 before increasing it Monday to 3,939.

The radio station broadcasting from the country's capital, Naypyitaw, said that 2,879 more people are unaccounted for in a single town, Bogalay, in the country's low-lying Irrawaddy River delta area where the storm wreaked the most havoc.

The situation in the countryside remained unclear because of poor communications and roads left impassable by the storm.

"It's clear that we're dealing with a very serious situation. The full extent of the impact and needs will require an extensive on-the-ground assessment," said Richard Horsey, a spokesman in Bangkok, Thailand for United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"What is clear at this point is that there are several hundred thousands of people in dire need of shelter and clean drinking water," Horsey said.

U.N. agencies were working with the Red Cross and other organizations to see how it can help those affected by the cyclone. UNICEF spokeswoman Veronique Taveau said the U.N. children's agency alone has five teams assessing the situation in the country.

At a meeting with foreign diplomats and representatives of U.N. and international aid agencies, Myanmar's foreign ministry officials said they welcomed international humanitarian assistance and urgently need roofing materials, plastic sheets and temporary tents, medicine, water purifying tablets, blankets and mosquito nets.

Neighboring Thailand announced that it would fly some aid in Tuesday.

The cyclone blew roofs off hospitals and schools and cut electricity in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon. Older citizens said they had never seen the city of some 6.5 million so devastated in their lifetimes.

With the city's already unstable electricity supply virtually nonfunctional, citizens lined up to buy candles, which doubled in price, and water since lack of electricity-driven pumps left most households dry. Some walked to the city's lakes to wash.

Hotels and richer families were using private generators but only sparingly, given the soaring price of fuel.

Many stayed away from their jobs, either because they could not find transportation or because they had to seek food and shelter for their families.

"Without my daily earning, just survival has become a big problem for us," said Tin Hla, who normally repairs umbrellas at a roadside stand.

With his home destroyed by the storm, Tin Hla said he has had to place his family of five into one of the monasteries that have offered temporary shelter to those left homeless.
Howard Stern offers Rosie O’Donnell a radio special

If I hadn’t heard it for myself, I never would have believed it. The “King of All Media,” Howard Stern, and the former “Queen of Nice,” Rosie O’Donnell, could end up working together on Sirius. The pair were once engaged in a vicious war of words, but all that changed when Stern saw her documentary “All Aboard.” He was impressed with the work she was doing with foster kids and children with special needs, and said so on the air- much to the disgust of many listeners. The unlikely pair have been quietly patching things up, and on Tuesday, Rosie called into Howard’s show on Sirius. Stern offered Rosie an hour-long talk special on his channel, Howard 101.

On Stern’s show in 1998, the staff once estimated the size of O’Donnell’s noggin, filled what was deemed a comparable container with jellybeans and challenged visiting celebrities and listeners to guess the number. And O’Donnell always had some choice words about Stern whenever his more militant fans prank-called her self-titled talk show.

In recent years, however, Stern’s rants about Rosie subsided, particularly after he admitted on the air a year or two ago that they had a nice chat when bumping into each other at a restaurant.

Today, O’Donnell called from her home-presumably in South Nyack-to chat it up with Howard and the gang. The gripping interview, which lasted almost an hour, covered her career, her love life and her controversial theory about 9/11.

On quitting her own talk show: “I left because I could no longer enjoy it the way one should enjoy their work, and I was sort of paying someone else to raise my kids and (hated) not having time to live my life.”

On ‘The View’: O’Donnell said she respects her successor, Whoopi Goldberg, because of her ability to be real; remains friendly with Sarah Lawrence College grad Barbara Walters; but was never completely embraced by Joy Behar (for whom O’Donnell opened early in her career as a stand-up comedian). The liberal O’Donnell said she has only exchanged a few baby-related e-mails with conservative “View” cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck since O’Donnell left the show. Then O’Donnell admitted that Hasselbeck was the most attractive woman on the show.

On her celebrity crushes: O’Donnell, a lesbian, said she really did have a crush on Tom Cruise and revealed that Matthew McConaughey also turned her on while slow-talking his way through a description on how to make beer-can chicken. She said her current celebrity crushes include Angelina Jolie, Angela Bassett, Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek and Diane Lane. Not on that list, however, is Stern’s fiancée, Beth Ostrosky, whom O’Donnell complimented and described as a “too perfect … Barbie doll.”

On her love life: She said she was sexually abused as a child, lost her virginity when she was 21 to a man, and could count her number of sexual conquests on “two hands.” She added that rumors of a wild life as a single woman had been greatly exaggerated, adding, “I’m not even nude in the shower.”

[From Suburbarazzi]

That was way more than I want to know about Rosie. Still: if these two can make up, anyone can. Last year, when Stern sidekick Artie Lange contemplated leaving the show, Stern actually considered replacing him with O’Donnell. At that time, he said, “Hey, Rosie really mixed it up on The View, she caused controversy on a daily basis and I’m a big fan of controversy. Controversy brings listeners. Much of my career has been based on lesbians and controversy, Rosie is a double whammy.” That may be true, but I don’t know if I could tune in and listen to an hour of Rosie every morning
