Blueprint's Light Bright DIY holiday project frugal-style

After seeing the Casasugar post where Angelica made her version Blueprint magazine's Light Bright diy holiday project, I was inspired to make my own! I set out to try using what I already had on hand to pull it off (instead of spending the outrageous ~$140 detailed in the mag).

I used:

An old IKEA-frame covered with stapled fabric from apartment decor of years past (wood frame, thick cardboard backing, fabric). I believe it is the 21x29 (19x27) RAM which is only $4.99 new. I did shop for a canvas frame at Michael's, but a good sized one was $21.99. I am cheap and didn't want to buy one without one of those 40%-off coupons.
White semi-gloss latex paint (left over from painting wall trim in the house, quart size). You can purchase a new can (Valspar 1-Quart Ultra Premium Interior Latex Semi-Gloss Wall & Trim Paint, Ultra White) at Lowe's for $12.
and a new $2 set of 100-bulb mini Christmas lights (white cord) from Target. I didn't bother gluing the lights in.

It was fun, easy, and I think it came out pretty cute!

House Tour: Rhiannon's Affordably Cool SF Pad

CasaSugar Community member Rhiannon138 posted photos of her cooler than cooler apartment in the Su Casa group, and I just had to ask her to give us a house tour. Rhiannon and her boyfriend, Victor, both students at SFSU in their 20s, and her dog Mayo live in San Francisco. They've worked very hard to make their home comfortable and stylish on a modest budget. She says, "We're renters and also tried hard to work with and disguise carpeting, linoleum, and an average kitchen. I've gotten a lot of ideas and inspiration from seeing other people's homes on blogs, so hopefully mine could inspire someone in return!" Come take the full tour!

Cool Idea: Alternative Art Hanging

I wanted a unique way to hang some of my botanical photographs, and came up with this very easy and cheap solution. All I needed was a branch, some twine and a handful of alligator clips. Since they're not under glass, I sprayed the photographs with an archival varnish to protect them from dust and fading. Before I hung them up, I painted the wall a warm color to complement the sepia tones of the art.

Assisted Living: Where to Find Affordable Mirrored Furniture

CasaSugar Community member SLDIZZ of the Assisted Living group is looking for some cheap ($250 or less) mirrored furniture (side tables/chests). "I am obsessed with some Horchow pieces," she says, like this Claudia Mirrored Chest ($719), but they are still way over her budget.

SLDIZZ, you've come to the right place! I'm a diehard mirrored furniture fan, and like you, I can't bring myself to splurge on Horchow's pieces. To see some great resources for affordable mirrored furniture, read more.

Pier 1's Hayworth Collection includes a mirrored chest, nightstand, vanity and mirror, vanity bench, jewelry armoire, lingerie chest, bedside chest, headboard, and footboard, which are all on sale ranging from $80 to $600. Very affordable, but they look expensive to me! The Hayworth Nightstand ($180) will probably suit your purposes well.
Target is also a great resource for mirrored furniture. The website is tricky though, because some items are listed as "glass," not mirror (even though they are). But, the items I have found that I think will suit you are the Glass Accent Table ($90), the Mirrored Side Table ($90), and the Cinema Side Table ($330).
The Cinema Side Table and a few other mirrored tables, manufactured by Bailey Street, were actually just for sale on members-only sample sale site One Kings Lane. They've probably sold out by now, so it's a good idea to register and keep an eye out for similar offerings there in the future.
You should also check out your local HomeGoods for mirrored furniture pieces.
Or, if you're feeling crafty, you can DIY your own mirrored furniture.
