Convicted swindler Bernard Madoff was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison for stealing billions of dollars from hundreds of investors over decades in one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history.
U.S. District Judge Denny Chin called the scope of the fraud "staggering" and gave the 71-year-old financier the maximum sentence allowed, ensuring Madoff would live out his days behind bars.

Window washer in coma after falling 47 Stories woke up on Christmas day
Alcides Moreno, 37, fell 47 stories from a New York skyscraper when a freak accident sent his window-washing platform plunging to the concrete pavement. The accident killed his brother, who was working on the same scaffolding platform, and left Moreno is such a bad state that doctors couldn't risk moving him to an operating room. Instead, they operated on him in the emergency room, leaving him in a vegetative state for nearly three weeks.

If the victims of Bernard Madoff were looking for catharsis in the court of U.S. District Judge Denny Chin, they got nothing close to it. Several of them had gathered in the large, packed courtroom in Lower Manhattan for Madoff's hearing Thursday morning, but Chin issued instructions that victims could speak only if they wanted to object to Madoff's pleading guilty to 11 counts of fraud.
