TO listen to President Obama’s speech on Wednesday night, or to just about anyone else in the health care debate, you would think that the biggest problem with health care in America is the system itself — perverse incentives, inefficiencies, unnecessary tests and procedures, lack of competition, and greed.

This post is inspired by something I found in my cabinet today: a Nature's Valley Strawberry Yogurt granola bar. I don't eat granola bars (for the reasons you'll read later in this post) but I picked the thing up just to read the label for kicks. Most people think granola bars are the prime example of a healthy snack.

Holleighz’ 52 Weeks of Baking – Week 5: Asian Spice Cupcakes with Individual Black Pearls

Somewhere, I heard rumor of black pearl chips, a mixture of dark chocolate and wasabi, and I scoured every Asian grocery in the city for months with no luck. When I came across this recipe for a black pearl layer cake, I was instantly intrigued – it had the same flavor combination in a rich ganache.

The Omnivore's Dilemma
I picked this book up before flying back to SF yesterday, and I'm about 2/3 into it. But I just had to tell you all — you have got to read this book. It's a fascinating look into where our food comes from, how it hurts or helps the environment, and what exactly it is that we're putting into our bodies.
