The most efficient washers use less hot water, have
energy-efficient motors, better spray arms, use sensors
to determine the length of the wash cycle, and have
controls for water temperature. The newest EnergyStar
dishwashers are 25 percent more efficient than the many
other new dishwashers that do not have the label. At 25
percent, these dishwashers can save up to $25 per year
on energy costs (NRC, 2004).

I have heard this before and just read this now.......What has your experience been?
Using a dishwasher actually uses about 35% less water than
washing dishes by hand. And, if you skip the drying cycle
and let the dishes air dry you'll use about 15% less
electricity.

The cost of maintaining a home and appliances is often a major deterrent for those debating whether to rent or purchase a home. The unexpected expense of fixing leaky gutters and broken dishwashers can be budget breaking if it comes at the wrong time of month. Not to mention it's a huge pain.

Do you wash the dishes by hand or use a dishwasher? I prefer washing them by hand as soon as I finish a meal.

When I bought my house 6 years ago, it was cheap, dirt cheap. But almost nothing had been updated in nearly 40 years! The bedrooms had shag carpet and the kitchen had indoor/outdoor carpet (eck!) and ugly cabinets and plain laminate counters and matching laminate backplashes.
First, I tiled the floor, since that was in our budget at the time. Later it cause slight problems with the new cabinets--we basically stuck with the old footprint.
Then we had new cabinets, a new counter, a dishwasher, and new lights installed.

Hi,
We're purchasing our first home (we've put an offer on the bank-approved-full-price and been accepted by the seller but since it's a short sale, we're waiting for the bank to respond).
I know this is way too early, but I would LOVE inputs, suggestions on how to 'reno' or 'refresh' the kitchen and bathroom. We're going to be purchasing all new appliances (they don't come with any working ones), painting, putting new carpet on the floor (since their hardwood is in a real sorry state), mowing the lawn and 'cleaning up' the whole exterior that has looked like a fire-hazard jungle, etc.

am not sure about you, but every week seems to be cleaning week at my house. I try to do the bedding, the spot behind the toilet, the oven and the outside deck; but things happen, life intervenes and the cleaning jobs get pushed and pushed to the following week.
I am not sure who it was that decided the end of March, first of April was designated as spring cleaning, but ladies..
