"Before you've finished your breakfast this morning, you'll have relied on half the world"
- Martin Luther King
An interesting thought. And a depressing one, when you realise that those people you've relied on for your coffee and muesli are almost certainly being exploited and oppressed by the unfair power balance in world trade.

Ethical Bean is a great coffee roaster: A bit about the company from their website:
We believe in global responsibility. Ethical Bean purchases only Certified Fair Trade and Certified Organic coffees. It is important to us that coffee farmers are paid a living wage for their efforts, and that they can afford the basic necessities of life, like food, shelter, education and health care.

This sticky tip etiquette question comes from Angelica, part of our Money Talk group.
I had brunch with a pal recently at a fairly upscale new restaurant and the entire experience was a bust. We had just worked out and were starving so we put in our order as soon as we sat down.

I had brunch with a pal recently at a fairly new upscale restaurant and the entire experience was a bust. We had just worked out and were starving so we put in our order as soon as we sat down. Unfortunately, there was a mix up over who our server was and we ended up waiting over an hour for our food.

I really need some help here from this fabulous community – I don’t know whether I’m being unreasonable, so need to put this out there.
When my boyfriend and I got together 2 and a half years ago, he explained he was still living at home because he was about to quit his job in finance and strike out as his own as a writer. I admired his guts, and although I found it a little odd having to see his folks twice / three times week, they were nice so I didn’t mind too much.

I know a lot of people really love starbucks, but I am not one of them: no judgement, but its just not a place I go for coffee. Actually, I rarely have coffee out, unless i'm on campus and need it (or feel I do. who NEEDS coffee, really?) to get through my classes/studying or maybe when I'm at a restaurant - but I only get it if its organic/fair trade or the like and from a local coffee shop.

Edit: Full poll results can be found here: Vanity Fair
NEW YORK – Half the respondents of a new poll say taxing the richest Americans by at least 50 percent is a great idea, while more than a third consider Twitter a fad that will likely fade.
Those are among the findings of a new "60 Minutes"-Vanity Fair Poll released Sunday.
Nearly half of the respondents chose Wal-Mart as the institution that best symbolizes America today, leaving in the dust runners-up Google, Microsoft, the NFL, and the banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs.

HSBC, one of the biggest banks on the planet, has taken to calling itself "the world's local bank." Starbucks is un-branding at least three of its Seattle outlets, the first of which just reopened as "15th Avenue Coffee and Tea." Winn-Dixie, a 500-outlet supermarket chain, recently launched a new ad campaign under the tagline, "Local flavor since 1956."
